History of the Language of Flowers (Floriography)
Who said red roses are romantic? Who determined the meaning behind each flower?
Floriography, or the language of flowers, is widely used in the Victorian era. However, very few people know who started this tradition or why each flower has to mean what it means nowadays. So let’s trace back to ancient times, travel to the Victorian era, and come back to this century to discover this together.

The secret language of flowers | Heather Whitney | TEDxSalford
Dr Heather Whitney is a molecular biologist by training, but now uses ideas from across the scientific spectrum (from optical physics to beekeeping) to study plant-animal interactions. As both a researcher and speaker, she hopes to show that plants are much more sneaky than is usually suspected -- they have to do everything that animals do (from finding a mate to coping with predators) but manage it without moving. Heather and her work have been featured on Radio 4′s Material World and The Naked Scientist.
As a scientist, Heather has won awards for her research and has recently been awarded a L'Oréal-UNESCO UK and Ireland for Women Award in Science Fellowship. She spent several years as a researcher at the University of Cambridge before moving to the University of Bristol.

Unexpected meanings of flowers revealed | Monique Evancic | TEDxBoise
Discover the surprising, and sometimes scandalous, meanings of flowers. Former TV journalist, Monique Evancic, rekindles the long-lost language of flowers. Harness true Flower Power as you craft expressive arrangements for the people you love — and those you don’t. A TV journalist turned marketer, Monique is enthusiastic about recovering the vanishing story of the language of flowers and reclaiming their use as a powerful communication device and life-enhancement. As a Cuban-American child, she fondly recalls being spritzed daily with a soft, violet fragrance from the island’s most iconic perfumery. Decades later, she carries on this same sensory tradition with her own daughter. Since going “on assignment” to unearth the true significance of flowers, she now hands them out with a deeper in...

The Language of Flowers
Lisa Hand is a long-time friend and business associate of Schreiner's Iris Gardens. As we do not have our gift shop this year, nor did we have our annual Memorial Day Weekend celebration, we collaborated with Lisa to record this video in lieu of the live presentation on The Language of Flowers which she makes each year here in the gardens on Memorial Day Weekend.
Please visit Lisa's website and Facebook page for more information about Wind Horse Antiques, as well as the various Victorian tea events she hosts around the Willamette Valley. You will...

The Secret Victorian Language of Flowers
In the Victorian era, there were many restrictions when it came to social interaction. The language of flowers provided a more subtle and polite way to express how you truly feel.

Since going “on assignment” to unearth the true significance of flowers, she now hands them out with a deeper intentionality, crafting expressive arrangements that shout “go get ‘em,” or “cheer up,” or “I (heart) you”. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
