HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST SUPER

Superannuation, often referred to as ‘super’, is a government initiative to help Australians save for retirement.

Why does super exist?

Well, no one wants to work forever. Most of us hope to one day be in a position to retire from the daily grind and enjoy some of the finer things in life.

In the past, many people relied on the government to support them financially after they stopped working. Some were lucky enough to receive a pension from their employer.

But these days, people are living much longer, which means the government and employers can’t afford to support people in retirement to the same extent.

To combat this, in 1992 the government introduced the Super Guarantee, which compels your employer to contribute a set percentage of your salary into super.

Why your super is important

Super is a long-term investment vehicle designed to help you save for retirement.

Under the Super Guarantee, all employers are required to contribute a minimum of 9.5 per cent of your salary into your super fund, which will increase to 12 per cent over the next few years.

It’s also possible (and preferable) to contribute extra money into super to boost your retirement savings.

The money you have in super is invested into growth assets and will accumulate over time. It generally can’t be accessed until you stop working and reach a defined retirement age, known as a preservation age.

By this stage, the aim is to have enough money in super to support your lifestyle in retirement.

The benefits of super

There are a number of tax concessions available when investing in super, making it an attractive way to invest and grow wealth for most people.

Some people may also be eligible to receive bonus super contributions from the government, and it’s often cheaper to access personal insurances such as life insurance within super too.

How to contribute to your super

There are two ways to contribute to super, known as concessional and non-concessional contributions.

Each has different tax implications and is subject to a set contributions cap, which limits how much money a person can contribute in a given year. Exceeding a contributions cap may result in paying additional tax.

Concessional contributions

  • Concessional contributions are before-tax contributions.
  • Employer contributions made under the Super Guarantee are concessional contributions.
  • It’s possible to ask your employer to make additional concessional contributions from your pre-tax salary (therefore reducing your taxable income and increasing your super balance). This is known as salary sacrificing.
  • Concessional contributions are subject to a cap of $30,000 per year in most cases.

Non-concessional contributions

  • Non-concessional contributions are after-tax contributions. An example of a non-concessional contribution is using your savings to top up your super.
  • Non-concessional contributions are subject to a cap of $180,000 per year in most cases, although people aged under 65 may be able to ‘bring forward’ three years worth of contributions at one time (e.g. contribute up to $540,000 now, for the next three years).

When it comes to making contributions, be sure to check the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website for the latest contribution caps.

Fees

High fees will eat away at your money and reduce returns, so it makes sense to look for the best value fund that satisfies your needs.

Make sure you read a fund’s Product Disclosure Statement in full and take advantage of online comparison tools to compare the costs of different funds.

Investments

It’s important to choose a super fund with a broad enough range of investment options to satisfy your investment strategy and risk appetite.

When reviewing a fund’s investment performance, look for a history of consistent performance or out-performance relative to its peers over the long-term.

But remember, past performance is no indication of future returns. A fund that shot the lights out this year isn’t guaranteed to do so again next year.

The MoneySaverHQ comparison tool enables you to sort funds by performance and rating as well as fees.

Insurance

Many super funds automatically provide new members with some combination of death, disablement and income protection insurance when joining, known as default cover.

While this cover is generic, it can be much cheaper than accessing the same insurance outside of super, as the fund receives a group discount.

It’s usually very simple to access too, without the strict underwriting requirements of standalone cover.

It’s important to review the cover offered by your fund to work out whether it’s suitable for your personal situation.

In most cases it’s possible to increase (or reduce) the level of insurance cover you have within super to suit your needs.

Check out related guides on life insurance, income protection insurance, TPD cover and trauma cover

Other benefits

Many super funds offer a variety of benefits in addition to looking after your retirement savings, such as member rewards programs.

Depending on your situation, you may find them useful, but pay attention to fees, investments and insurance decisions first and foremost.

Compare funds by rating, performance and fees here

What happens if you don’t choose?

If you don’t choose a fund, your employer is required to pay your super into a ‘MySuper’ account.

These are simple funds with low fees and standard features which will look after your money until you make a decision.

Sign-up for the moneysaverHQ weekly deals and you’ll get a range of savings on products delivered to your email box every week.

Consolidating your accounts

Super is compulsory, which means that if you don’t nominate a super fund when you start out with an employer, they’re required to open one for you.

This means many people end up with multiple super funds.

But multiple funds means multiple sets of fees eating away at your money. In most cases, once you’ve found a fund that suits your needs, it makes sense to combine your accounts into the main one.

The easiest way to consolidate your accounts is to use the tools available through the ATO. The first step is to jump online and visit the ATO’s SuperSeeker website.

This will allow you to conduct a quick search on all lost super accounts held in your name. Just remember to have your tax file number handy.

Alternatively, you can sign up for a MyGov account and link it to the ATO.

This will give you a full view of your super, including all your active accounts as well as any lost accounts. From here you can organise to transfer balances between funds or consolidate your super funds together.

Alternatively, you can call the ATO and either use their 24 hour self-help phone service or ask for someone to run through the process with you.
