Toponymy

Toponymy

Toponymy is the study of place names (toponyms), their origins, meanings, use, and typology.

Etymology

The word "toponymy" is derived from the Greek words tópos (τόπος) ("place") and ónoma (ὄνομα) ("name"). Toponymy is itself a branch of onomastics, the study of names of all kinds.

Meaning and history

Toponym is the general name for any place or geographical entity. Related, more specific types of toponym include hydronym for a body of water and oronym for a mountain or hill. A toponymist is one who studies toponymy.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word "toponymy" first appeared in English in 1876; since then, toponym has come to replace "place-name" in professional discourse among geographers. It can be argued that the first toponymists were the storytellers and poets who explained the origin of specific place names as part of their tales; sometimes place-names served as the basis for the etiological legends. The process of folk etymology usually took over, whereby a false meaning was extracted from a name based on its structure or sounds. Thus, the toponym of Hellespont was explained by Greek poets as being named after Helle, daughter of Athamas, who drowned there as she crossed it with her brother Phrixus on a flying golden ram. The name, however, is probably derived from an older language, such as Pelasgian, which was unknown to those who explained its origin. George R. Stewart theorized, in his book Names on the Globe, that Hellespont originally meant something like "narrow Pontus" or "entrance to Pontus", "Pontus" being an ancient name for the region around the Black Sea, and by extension, for the sea itself.

Abstract As soon as one crosses the River Tamar and enters Cornwall the place names change. Assonance forms basis of the etymologies in these glossaries and explanations of the meanings of place names are consequently not merely conjectural but frequently fanciful. In 1871, Bannister published his Glossary of Cornish Names, containing approximately 20,000 place names. A succession of Cornish place name dictionaries for popular consumption followed in the 20th century. A more serious study of Cornish toponymy is Padel’s (1985) Cornish Place-Name Elements, a dictionary of the elements that constitute Cornish place names. It is during the 20th century that dictionaries of Cornish place names start to use standardised Cornish spellings. This led to problems. The Cornish language community were keen to see road signs with modern standardised spellings for place names alongside their current existing spellings. However, since place name etymologies are largely conjectural, much argument arose regarding precisely how Cornish place names should be respelled for the purposes of signage. This dispute continues to the present day.

Malta - People, toponymy, Language (4 B.C. - 1600) is a new book by Arnold Cassola, published by The Farsons Foundation. The publication aims to present rare material regarding the Maltese people, language and toponymy in previous centuries. The first chapter, concerns a thriving community of Maltese living in Trapani in the 15th century. These Maltese found refuge, comfort, wealth and prosperity in Trapani and the surrounding area and became involved in various trades, financial transactions and other general activities. The second chapter examines the reference to the islands of Malta, Gozo and Lampas in the earliest known portulan of the Mediterranean, the Periplous attributed to Skylax of Karyanda, dating back to the 4th Century B.C. The author discusses the possibility that the name Lampas, normally associated with Lampedusa, could actually be a reference to the island of Comino. The vast richness of toponymic references to Malta, Gozo and Comino to be found in three ancient Italian portulans (1296-15th century) is dealt with in the third chapter. These Maltese place-names and landmarks are to be listed amongst the earliest known references to Maltese toponyms. The fourth chapter studies the toponymic references to the Maltese archipelago contained in the 1572 map which Girolamo Porro had charted for Tommaso Porcacchi's Le isole piv famose del mondo. The fifth and sixth chapters deal with the Maltese language in the 16th century. The former chapter, compiles a number of 16th century opinions expressed by foreigners with reference to the nature of the Maltese language. The sixth chapter is a study of Hieronymus Megiser's late 16th century Maltese word-list and place-names that the German scholar had listed during his stay on the island.
