Where to go in the Philippines. What to do in the Philippines. As a tourist in the Philippines there is so much to do and see. This video is the third in the series, "Philippines, where to go, what to see". This time we head to the island of Cebu. Using our holiday videos we show you some of the places to go and sites to see as alternatives to lazing on the beach, as well as telling you some of the history of the Philippines. Most of the large islands are reached by flying from Manila. Changing islands usually needs flying back to Manila and getting another plane to your island destination, which is a bit of a pain, but there are flights from Puerto Princesa to Cebu. We stayed at Harold’s Hotel, a mid-range hotel. Cebu City is the capital of the whole Cebu Island province and is one of the oldest city where a lot of historical events took place during the 16th century. There was only one place in Cebu we were particularly interested in going so instead of booking to some tour operators, we decided to hire a car and a driver (Danny Noy’s Taxi) to show us the site. We thought it was better as we have the choice whatever time we wanted and the driver was much known on the internet being also a tourist guide. He picked us up from the hotel the next day on the meeting time we agreed. It was a great deal of more comfort and at a pace suited us. The first stop we went was the downtown area in Cebu City where the famous landmark of Magellan’s Cross was to be seen. It was named as Magellan’s Cross as it was Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer who gave the order to his fellow Portuguese and Spanish colonizers to plant a Christian cross when they arrived in Cebu on 1521 and that started the teaching of Christianity to the Filipinos. Just beside this historical site is the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño or locally-called Santo Nino Church. It is one of the oldest church that still remained and being the oldest, it is termed as the Mother and Head of all Churches in the Philippines as it symbolizes the beginning and development of Christianity since the Spanish colonization. After Cebu City we moved to Mactan City, another main city in Cebu where the driver showed us another historical landmark, Lapu-Lapu’s shrine. There you would find Lapu-Lapu’s bronze statue as he is considered as the first Filipino hero. The last stop we headed was the very particular site we were interested to go, the Taoist Temple and so we returned to Cebu City. This is where most visitors come to see because of its colourful structure of traditional Chinese architecture allowing them to wander its grounds. Dragons guard the temple and bring good fortune to believers of Taoism. After this Cebu holiday tour, the next and last in the series would be in Bohol.
