Modern Poetry (ENGL 310) with Langdon Hammer
The early poetry of William Butler Yeats is read and interpreted with particular attention paid to Yeats's ambitions as a specifically Irish poet. Yeats's commitment to a poetry of symbol is explored in "The Song of the Wandering Aengus," a fable of poetic vocation. "A Coat," composed at the end of Yeats's struggle to bring about an Irish national theater, shows the poet reconceiving his style and in search of a new audience. "The Fisherman" is read as a revision of "The Song of the Wandering Aengus" which reflects this new set of concerns.

*** Celtic folklore, the Theosophical society, the Golden Dawn group, seances and a wife who communicated with the spirit world all had a huge effect on the work of this great Irish poet. He published his first collection in 1889 and won the Nobel prize for literature in 1923.At the close of the nineteenth century he published one of his best known works. He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven: “Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,Enwrought with golden and silver light,The blue and the dim and the dark clothsOf night and light and the half-light,I would spread the cloths under your feet: But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.” But Yeats the dreamer and the poet was also a mystic, a philosopher and a practitioner of magic. From the occult subcultures of Victorian London to the outlandish folklore of the Irish Peasantry, Yeats’ obsession with the spiritual world infused his poetic mind and even drove him to describe his own religion. Why was the period so alive with spiritualism? And how did the poems reflect the dreams? ***

I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.
When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And someone called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.
Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done,
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.

I did this one when I first joined YouTube from an old mp3 file. It sounds terrible now so I hope this version is better.
Yeats' portrait is by Augustus John. That prompts me to tell you a story about Augustus John - provided for amusement only - you must decide for yourself whether you think it's true. I has a third-share of a flat in Brighton, the other shares belonging to an Ethiopian Prince and Jack who had a National Diploma in painting. One evening we went to a party in the Old Steine and I got talking to an gentleman in a striped shirt. Jack wandered off for half an hour of so and when he came back I asked him whether he met anybody interesting. He said. "I was talking to some old buffer about painting. He seems to know a thing or two" The man in the striped shirt said "He ought to - he's Augustus John". This makes a better story if I don't give the punch-line away before telling it.

William Butler Yeats (
/ˈjeɪts/ YAYTS; 13 June 1865 – 28 January 1939) was an Irish poet and playwright, and one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and British literary establishments, in his later years he served as an Irish Senator for two terms. Yeats was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival and, along with Lady Gregory, Edward Martyn, and others, founded the Abbey Theatre, where he served as its chief during its early years. In 1923 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature as the first Irishman so honoured for what the Nobel Committee described as "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation." Yeats is generally considered one of the few writers who completed their greatest works after being awarded the Nobel Prize; such works include The Tower (1928) and The Winding Stair and Other Poems (1929). Yeats was a very good friend of Indian Bengali poet Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

Liam John Neeson,OBE (born 7 June 1952) is an Irish actor who has been nominated for an Oscar, a BAFTA and three Golden Globe Awards. He has starred in a number of notable roles including Oskar Schindler in Schindler's List, Michael Collins in Michael Collins, Peyton Westlake in Darkman, Bryan Mills in Taken, Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars (the film Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace and episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Alfred Kinsey in Kinsey, Ra's al Ghul in Batman Begins, and the voice of Aslan in The Chronicles of Narnia film series.
He starred in other notable films such as Excalibur, The Dead Pool, Nell, Rob Roy, Les Misérables, The Haunting, Love Actually, Kingdom of Heaven, Taken, Clash of the Titans, The A-Team, Unknown and The Grey, as well as smaller arthouse films (e.g. Deception, Breakfast on Pluto, Chloe). He was ranked at number 69 on Empire magazine's 100 greatest movie stars of all time in 1997.
He was born in Ballymena, County Antrim and educated at St Patrick's College (now St Patrick's, Dundonald), Ballymena Technical College and Queen's University Belfast. He moved to Dublin after university to further his acting career, joining the renowned Abbey Theatre. In the early 1990s, he moved again to the United States, where the wide acclaim for his performance in Schindler's List led to more high-profile work. He is widowed and lives in New York with his two sons.

Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins, CBE (born 31 December 1937), best known as Anthony Hopkins, is a Welsh actor of film, stage and television, and a composer. Considered to be one of the greatest living actors, Hopkins is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Other prominent film credits include The Lion in Winter, Magic, The Elephant Man, 84 Charing Cross Road, Dracula, Legends of the Fall, The Remains of the Day, Amistad, Nixon, The World's Fastest Indian, and Fracture. Hopkins was born and brought up in Wales. Retaining his British citizenship, he became a U.S. citizen on 12 April 2000. Hopkins' films have spanned a wide variety of genres, from family films to horror. As well as his Academy Award, Hopkins has also won three BAFTA Awards, two Emmys and the Cecil B. DeMille Golden Globe Award. Hopkins was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1993 for services to the arts. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003, and was made a Fellow of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 2008.

Yeats's commitment to a poetry of symbol is explored in "The Song of the Wandering Aengus," a fable of poetic vocation. "A Coat," composed at the end of Yeats's struggle to bring about an Irish national theater, shows the poet reconceiving his style and in search of a new audience. Yeats' portrait is by Augustus John. That prompts me to tell you a story about Augustus John - provided for amusement only - you must decide for yourself whether you think it's true. I has a third-share of a flat in Brighton, the other shares belonging to an Ethiopian Prince and Jack who had a National Diploma in painting. One evening we went to a party in the Old Steine and I got talking to an gentleman in a striped shirt. Jack wandered off for half an hour of so and when he came back I asked him whether he met anybody interesting. He said. "I was talking to some old buffer about painting. He seems to know a thing or two" The man in the striped shirt said "He ought to - he's Augustus John". This makes a better story if I don't give the punch-line away before telling it.

A short video homage to "Aedh Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven," one of the most profoundly beautiful poems in the English language, and one of my favorites from Yeats:

Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
The reading is by Anthony Hopkins, in a scene from the 1987 film "84 Charing Cross Road." The music is by harpist Claire Roche, from her album "Dancing in the Wind," and is excerpted from "The Salley Gardens" (an acoustic interpretation of another Yeats poem). The photography is mine.

Ingrid Lyne has been found dead and John Robert Charlton has been arrested for murder after police in Seattle confirmed that dismembered body parts found on Saturday belong to the mother of three who went missing after a date with a man she met online. Lyne went to see a baseball game with the man on Friday night but never returned, prompting family members to report her missing the next morning ... John R ... Mike Renner ... The case against Led Zeppelin comes from a trustee for the estate of a member of American rock band Spirit, who released a song named "Taurus" in 1968 ... That means the case will go to court. One member of Led Zeppelin is already off the hook....

Although they both do a fine job, Gambetta's rendition of "Valzer Per Un Amore" wins the day; it's a beautiful Italian song, inspired by the same Ronsard sonnet that Yeats paraphrased as "When you are old and grey and full of sleep," and Gambetta's gravelly baritone is perfect for the song's haughty but needy sentiment ... ....
