Eguisheim is a small village close to the German border, near the Black Forest.
Because of this, the town has very strong Germanic influences in its language and architecture.
Eguisheim is a medieval city and as such has characteristic narrow, cobble-stoned streets and alleyways.
Most of the buildings, including the town's small castle, are centuries old.
The traditional and old-world feel of the houses in Eguisheim make it a charming destination.
The town has some amazing restaurants and is an excellent place for Alsacian wine.

Eguisheim ('most beautiful villages of France') is found near Colmar in Alsace, in the Haut-Rhin department of France.
Eguisheim is almost an offshoot of Colmar, but has its history as a separate, important, town.
The winding, cobbled streets of Eguisheim are lined with traditional medieval half-timbered buildings, brightly painted as are many of the buildings in Alsace. There are also fountains, flowers and ...storks.
Wander along the Rue du Rempart Sud which follows the line of the former moat. Its narrow street is lined with brightly coloured, higgledy piggledy houses. At the entrance to the street is the charming dovecote giving this a picture postcard beauty.
Walk up the Grand Rue of Eguisheim and see a selection of manor houses, inns and other houses all painted the blues, yellows, pinks and greens beloved of the Alsace region.
A little further up is the place du chateau with its chateau, church, colourful houses, fountain and ... storks! (I had been in Alsace 4 days when I got to Eguisheim and these are the first storks I had seen - though continuing south through Haut Rhin I did see more.) There are two nests in Eguisheim and a Stork sanctuary on the edge of the village where they are hoping to breed and re-introduce storks to the region.
There are plenty of bars, restaurants and accommodation in Eguisheim making this a good base for exploring the region. (I stayed at the Pierre and Vacances apartments on the edge of town. These were nice, well-equipped apartments in bright, Alsace-style buildings which were easy walking distance of Eguisheim centre. The PandV apartments have secure parking and a heated indoor pool.)Eguisheim is one of the villages on the Route du Vin running from Thann to Marlenheim. This medieval town was built in concentric circles round its fortified castle, where the only Pope from Alsace, Leo IX, is said to have been born. It has a unique combination of civil and military architecture from the 15th Century. There is a pleasant signposted walk round the ramparts, actually following the old sentry path round the battlements. Everywhere are half-timbered houses, with balconies weighed down with the red geraniums which have become part of the heritage of Alsace !

Eguisheim est l’un des plus beaux et typiques villages d’Alsace avec ses maisons à colombages, son tour de ville le long des remparts et son château des Comtes sur la place centrale.
Le village commence son développement après la construction du premier château d’Eguisheim au VIIIème siècle par le comte Eberhardt, petit fils du troisième Duc d’Alsace. Il est ainsi l’ancêtre du Pape Léon IX et le neveu de Sainte-Odile, patronne de l’Alsace. A l’extinction de la lignée des Comtes, au début du XIIIème siècle, la
ville est léguée à l’évêché de Strasbourg.
Au cours de ce siècle Eguisheim est élevée au rang de ville, fortifiée et rattachée au Haut-Mundat de Rouffach.
La ville reste rattachée au Mundat jusqu’à la révolution et connaît son âge d’or entre le XVIème et XVIIIème siècle, malgré quelques
soubresauts tels que la peste ou un fort appauvrissement lors de la guerre de trente ans

Eguisheim is a commune in the Haut-Rhin department in Alsace in north-eastern France.
Eguisheim produces Alsace wine of high quality. The commune is largely German-speaking.
Human presence in the area as early as the Paleolithic age is testified by archaeological excavations. In early historic times it was inhabited by the Gaul tribe of the Senones; the Romans conquered the village and developed here the cultivation of wine.
In the early Middle Ages, the Dukes of Alsace built here a castle (th century) around which the current settlement developed. The commune was the alleged birthplace of Pope Leo IX in June 1002.
The village centre receives many tourists, as the Alsace "Wine Route" passes the village. The village is also a member of the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France ("The most beautiful villages of France") association.

Eguisheim is almost an offshoot of Colmar, but has its history as a separate, important, town.
The winding, cobbled streets of Eguisheim are lined with traditional medieval half-timbered buildings, brightly painted as are many of the buildings in Alsace. There are also fountains, flowers and ...storks.
Wander along the Rue du Rempart Sud which follows the line of the former moat. Its narrow street is lined with brightly coloured, higgledy piggledy houses. At the entrance to the street is the charming dovecote giving this a picture postcard beauty.
Walk up the Grand Rue of Eguisheim and see a selection of manor houses, inns and other houses all painted the blues, yellows, pinks and greens beloved of the Alsace region.
A little further up is the place du chateau with its chateau, church, colourful houses, fountain and ... storks! (I had been in Alsace 4 days when I got to Eguisheim and these are the first storks I had seen - though continuing south through Haut Rhin I did see more.) There are two nests in Eguisheim and a Stork sanctuary on the edge of the village where they are hoping to breed and re-introduce storks to the region.
There are plenty of bars, restaurants and accommodation in Eguisheim making this a good base for exploring the region. (I stayed at the Pierre and Vacances apartments on the edge of town. These were nice, well-equipped apartments in bright, Alsace-style buildings which were easy walking distance of Eguisheim centre. The PandV apartments have secure parking and a heated indoor pool.)Eguisheim is one of the villages on the Route du Vin running from Thann to Marlenheim. This medieval town was built in concentric circles round its fortified castle, where the only Pope from Alsace, Leo IX, is said to have been born. It has a unique combination of civil and military architecture from the 15th Century. There is a pleasant signposted walk round the ramparts, actually following the old sentry path round the battlements. Everywhere are half-timbered houses, with balconies weighed down with the red geraniums which have become part of the heritage of Alsace !

La maison préférée des Français est déjà en Alsace, maintenant on peut être fier d’avoir également le village préféré des Français.
Eguisheim est l’un des plus beaux et typiques villages d’Alsace avec ses maisons à colombages, son tour de ville le long des remparts et son château des Comtes sur la place centrale.
Le village commence son développement après la construction du premier château d’Eguisheim au VIIIème siècle par le comte Eberhardt, petit fils du troisième Duc d’Alsace. Il est ainsi l’ancêtre du Pape Léon IX et le neveu de Sainte-Odile, patronne de l’Alsace. A l’extinction de la lignée des Comtes, au début du XIIIème siècle, la
ville est léguée à l’évêché de Strasbourg.
Au cours de ce siècle Eguisheim est élevée au rang de ville, fortifiée et rattachée au Haut-Mundat de Rouffach.
La ville reste rattachée au Mundat jusqu’à la révolution et connaît son âge d’or entre le XVIème et XVIIIème siècle, malgré quelques
soubresauts tels que la peste ou un fort appauvrissement lors de la guerre de trente ans

Eguisheim et ses environs font partie du Pays des Etoiles de Noël. La période de l'Avent venue, chaque village s'habille de lumières et la réalité laisse place aux rêves.
De nombreuses animations célèbrent la Nativité. La douce odeur du pain d'épices guide les visiteurs vers le marché de l'Avent puis la magie fait le reste
Depuis 6 ans, le marché de Noël d'Eguisheim et ses nombreuses
animations se sont vus décernés le très convoité label "Villes et Villages de Noël".

Classé l'un des Plus Beaux Villages de France depuis 2003, Grand Prix National du fleurissement depuis 1989, médaille d'or du concours européen de l'Entente Florale en 2006 et Village Préféré des Français 2013... Eguisheim, berceau du vignoble alsacien, enroulé en cercles concentriques et multicolores autour de son château, ne compte plus ses titres de noblesse.

Eguisheim est le haut-lieu du tourisme en Alsace, ville natale du
Pape Léon IX et berceau du vignoble alsacien !
La maison préférée des Français est déjà en Alsace, maintenant on peut être fier d’avoir également le village préféré des Français.
Eguisheim est l’un des plus beaux et typiques villages d’Alsace avec ses maisons à colombages, son tour de ville le long des remparts et son château des Comtes sur la place centrale.
Le village commence son développement après la construction du premier château d’Eguisheim au VIIIème siècle par le comte Eberhardt, petit fils du troisième Duc d’Alsace. Il est ainsi l’ancêtre du Pape Léon IX et le neveu de Sainte-Odile, patronne de l’Alsace. A l’extinction de la lignée des Comtes, au début du XIIIème siècle, la
ville est léguée à l’évêché de Strasbourg.
Au cours de ce siècle Eguisheim est élevée au rang de ville, fortifiée et rattachée au Haut-Mundat de Rouffach.
La ville reste rattachée au Mundat jusqu’à la révolution et connaît son âge d’or entre le XVIème et XVIIIème siècle, malgré quelques
soubresauts tels que la peste ou un fort appauvrissement lors de la guerre de trente ans

Eguisheim et ses environs font partie du Pays des Etoiles de Noël. La période de l'Avent venue, chaque village s'habille de lumières et la réalité laisse place aux rêves.
De nombreuses animations célèbrent la Nativité. La douce odeur du pain d'épices guide les visiteurs vers le marché de l'Avent puis la magie fait le reste
Depuis 6 ans, le marché de Noël d'Eguisheim et ses nombreuses
animations se sont vus décernés le très convoité label "Villes et Villages de Noël".
Ce label récompense l'authenticité et la richesse de notre patrimoine et garantit la qualité des manifestations
proposées durant la période de l'Avent.
