Film tapes was saved from the flames...
Ub Iwerks' bizarre Balloonland (1935) has appeared in many video collections, often under its 16mm home-movie title The Pincushion Man. However, the Blackhawk Films Collection holds the original nitrate red/blue Cinecolor negatives, and this astonishing film is presented here with fully restored picture and sound prepared in collaboration with the UCLA Film and Television Archive.
Flip the Frog jumps happily from lily pad to lily pad, crossing the pond in order to get to an outdoor nightclub in the forest. Flip is the featured performer, and the crowd of critters is happy to see him. As the insect orchestra plays below, Flip dances on a tree stump. Later, he plays the piano as a mouse accompanies him on the violin. The piano cries during a sad song, and Flip has to blow its nose. Flip offends his instrument by caressing its leg with a bit too much familiarity. The piano kicks Flip, and the frog retaliates by punching the keys as he plays. Flip's violent performance leads to a crashing finish.
Flip the Frog was Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's first sound cartoon, & also the first color sound cartoon ever made in two-color Technicolor.

Probably the greatest of all the Flip the Frog cartoons, according to Leonard Maltin in his book "Of Mice And Magic". After he is dumped by his Betty Boop-ish girlfriend for a boy that's more handsome, Flip decides that a facelift is in order. This cartoon was posted here on YouTube by someone else, but the audio and video was not in synchronization with each other. I've corrected that issue in this post.

Ub Iwerks, A.S.C. (
/ˈʌb ˈaɪwɜrks/;born Ubbe Eert Iwerks, March 24, 1901 – July 7, 1971) was a two-time Academy Award winning American animator, cartoonist, character designer, inventor, and special effects technician, who co-created Mickey Mouse with Walt Disney.
He was born in Kansas City, Missouri. His father, Eert Ubbe Iwwerks, emigrated to the U.S. in 1869 from the village of Uttum in East Frisia (northwest Germany, today part of the municipality of Krummhörn). Ub's birth name can be seen on early “Alice” shorts that he signed. Several years later he simplified his name to “Ub Iwerks”, sometimes written as "U. B. Iwerks".
He is father to Disney Legend Don Iwerks and David L. Iwerks. Grandfather to documentary film producer Leslie Iwerks, and Chris, Larry, John, and Kathie Iwerks.
Iwerks was considered by many to be Walt Disney's oldest friend, and spent most of his career with Disney. The two met in 1919 while working for the Pesmen-Rubin Art Studio in Kansas City, and would eventually start their own commercial art business together. Disney and Iwerks then found work as illustrators for the Kansas City Slide Newspaper Company (which would later be named The Kansas City Film Ad Company). While working for the Kansas City Film Ad Company, Disney decided to take up work in animation, and Iwerks soon joined him.

Walter Elias "Walt" Disney (December 5, 1901 – December 15, 1966) was an American film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, animator, entrepreneur, entertainer, international icon, and philanthropist, well known for his influence in the field of entertainment during the 20th century. Along with his brother Roy O. Disney, he was co-founder of Walt Disney Productions, which later became one of the best-known motion picture producers in the world. The corporation is now known as The Walt Disney Company and had an annual revenue of approximately US$36 billion in the 2010 financial year.
Disney is particularly noted as a film producer and a popular showman, as well as an innovator in animation and theme park design. He and his staff created some of the world's most well-known fictional characters including Mickey Mouse, for whom Disney himself provided the original voice. During his lifetime he received four honorary Academy Awards and won 22 Academy Awards from a total of 59 nominations, including a record four in one year, giving him more awards and nominations than any other individual in history. Disney also won seven Emmy Awards and gave his name to the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort theme parks in the U.S., as well as the international resorts Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland.

Ub Iwerks' bizarre Balloonland (1935) has appeared in many video collections, often under its 16mm home-movie title The Pincushion Man. However, the Blackhawk Films Collection holds the original nitrate red/blue Cinecolor negatives, and this astonishing film is presented here with fully restored picture and sound prepared in collaboration with the UCLA Film and Television Archive.

Probably the greatest of all the Flip the Frog cartoons, according to Leonard Maltin in his book "Of Mice And Magic". After he is dumped by his Betty Boop-ish girlfriend for a boy that's more handsome, Flip decides that a facelift is in order. This cartoon was posted here on YouTube by someone else, but the audio and video was not in synchronization with each other. I've corrected that issue in this post.

He also appears in other media such as video games as well as merchandising, and is a meetable character at the Disney parks.
Mickey generally appears alongside his girlfriend Minnie Mouse, his pet dog Pluto, his friends Donald Duck, and Goofy, and his nemesis Pete, among others (see Mickey Mouse universe). Originally characterized as a mischievous antihero, Mickey's increasing popularity led to his being rebranded as an everyman, usually seen as a flawed, but adventurous hero. In 2009, Disney began to rebrand the character again by putting less emphasis on his pleasant, cheerful side and reintroducing the more mischievous and adventurous sides of his personality, beginning with the video game Epic Mickey.[9]

Mickey's first appearance in Steamboat Willie (1928).
Disney had Ub Iwerks secretly begin animating a new cartoon while still under contract with Universal. The cartoon was co-directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. Iwerks was the main animator for the short, and reportedly spent six weeks working on it. In fact, Iwerks was the main animator for every Disney short released in 1928 and 1929. Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising also assisted Disney during those years. They had already signed their contracts with Charles Mintz, but he was still in the process of forming his new studio and so for the time being they were still employed by Disney. This short would be the last they animated under this somewhat awkward situation.[19]
Mickey was first seen in a test screening of the cartoon short Plane Crazy, on May 15, 1928, but it failed to impress the audience and to add insult to injury, Walt could not find a distributor. Though understandably disappointed, Walt went on to produce a second Mickey short, The Gallopin' Gaucho, which was also not released for lack of a distributor.[20]
Steamboat Willie was first released on November 18, 1928, in New York. It was co-directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. Iwerks again served as the head animator, assisted by Johnny Cannon, Les Clark, Wilfred Jackson and Dick Lundy. This short was intended as a parody of Buster Keaton's Steamboat Bill Jr., first released on May 12 of the same year. Although it was the third Mickey cartoon produced, it was the first to find a distributor, and thus is considered by The Disney Company as Mickey's debut. Willie featured changes to Mickey's appearance (in particular, simplifying his eyes to large dots) that established his look for later cartoons and in numerous Walt Disney films.[21][22]

Disney had Ub Iwerks secretly begin animating a new cartoon while still under contract with Universal. The cartoon was co-directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. Iwerks was the main animator for the short, and reportedly spent six weeks working on it. In fact, Iwerks was the main animator for every Disney short released in 1928 and 1929. Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising also assisted Disney during those years. They had already signed their contracts with Charles Mintz, but he was still in the process of forming his new studio and so for the time being they were still employed by Disney. This short would be the last they animated under this somewhat awkward situation.[19]
Mickey was first seen in a test screening of the cartoon short Plane Crazy, on May 15, 1928, but it failed to impress the audience and to add insult to injury, Walt could not find a distributor. Though understandably disappointed, Walt went on to produce a second Mickey short, The Gallopin' Gaucho, which was also not released for lack of a distributor.[20]
Steamboat Willie was first released on November 18, 1928, in New York. It was co-directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. Iwerks again served as the head animator, assisted by Johnny Cannon, Les Clark, Wilfred Jackson and Dick Lundy. This short was intended as a parody of Buster Keaton's Steamboat Bill Jr., first released on May 12 of the same year. Although it was the third Mickey cartoon produced, it was the first to find a distributor, and thus is considered by The Disney Company as Mickey's debut. Willie featured changes to Mickey's appearance (in particular, simplifying his eyes to large dots) that established his look for later cartoons and in numerous Walt Disney films.[21][22]

The BFI National Archive and Walt Disney Animation Studios are pleased to announce the rediscovery of a rare, long-lost, Walt Disney animated film Sleigh Bells (1928) featuring the first ever Disney character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a long-eared precursor to Mickey Mouse. The world premiere of the new restoration of the film by Walt Disney Animation Studios will take place at BFI Southbank on 12 December 2015 as part of a programme It’s A Disney Christmas: Seasonal Shorts, screening other festive Disney gems from the 1930’s to the present day.
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was invented by Walt Disney in 1927 and was loved for his mischievous and rebellious personality. A number of other films do survive but Sleigh Bells has been, until now, a lost film, unseen since its original release. The animation in the film was accomplished by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, both of whom went on to create the character of Mickey Mouse, following a contractual disagreement with Universal, for whom they had created the Oswald films.
The print of Sleigh Bells (1928) was preserved in the collections of the BFI National Archive. The exciting re-discovery was made by a researcher browsing the online catalogue of the BFI National Archive’s holdings. Walt Disney Animation Studios have taken this unique surviving film print and created both a new preservation print and digital copies. The film has a running time of approximately 6 minutes.
Robin Baker, Head Curator, BFI National Archive said, “What a joyful treat to discover a long-lost Walt Disney film in the BFI National Archive and to be able to show Sleigh Bells to a whole new audience 87 years after it was made. The restoration of this film will introduce many audiences to Disney’s work in the silent period – it clearly demonstrates the vitality and imagination of his animation at a key point in his early career. We thank Walt Disney for working with us and are thrilled to present the world premiere of this restored version here in London at BFI Southbank.”
Andrew Millstein, President of Walt Disney Animation Studios, which oversaw the restoration, added, "We're thrilled to be collaborating with the BFI National Archives in the restoration of the 'lost' Oswald short, 'Sleigh Bells,' and to be sharing this delightful animated discovery with audiences in the UK as part of this special Disney holiday programme. The Oswald shorts are an important part of our Studios' history, and we have been working with film archives and private collectors all around the world to research the missing titles. We are grateful to Katrina Stokes, Robin Baker, and their associates at the BFI for helping us locate and preserve 'Sleigh Bells.'"

For the past 5 years, DreamWorks Animation has undergone a major software tool re-architecture. The result: in the Apollo Animation Platform. This platform was motivated by the studio’s desire to take advantage of emerging massively multi-core processing technology and cloud enabled scalability. Its goal: to introduce a new breed of real-time animation tools, aimed at and designed by artists. The first film to fully use the Apollo platform was the 2014 DreamWorks film, “How To Train Your Dragon 2.” Apollo enabled director Dean DeBlois and cinematographer Roger Deakins to achieve a quality and scale in animation and lighting far above current animated feature films - with an efficiency never before achieved at DreamWorks Animation.
Apollo consists of two key innovative applications, Premo and Torch. Both have been re-architected by DreamWorks Animation from the ground up, providing artists with intuitive, interactive performance that enables them to work in a naturalistic way. Premo is animation software that enables animators to work at the speed of their their imagination. Through the application of real-time parallel character evaluation underneath an animator-conceived user interface, Premo allows artists to get back to drawing their characters and landscapes with digital pens and interactive displays, resembling the traditional way of drawing images with pencil and paper. To wit, animators can now work with fully realized, high-fidelity characters, full backgrounds and sets - and can work with multiple characters at the same time. Animators can seamlessly switch between shots and characters without stopping to reconfigure their workspace, as well as make camera tweaks and edits without stopping animated playback.
Torch is a lighting software that empowers individual artists to create a vast amount of imagery through the management of millions of files across 12 creative departments, among hundreds of artists, and from thousands of iterations. Artists easily navigate those files with an intuitive graph interface and can ensure that the latest updates are brought into the right images at the right time. Using Torch, artists view lighting setups on film quality assets as they will appear in the film, without waiting for the computer to batch render the images. The result is more intricate lighting sequences that, prior to Torch, would have been impossible to create within an animated film.
Apollo has changed DreamWorks Animation’s entire approach to the production process. What was once a linear process of simplify-edit-view, is now a completely interactive, fluid creative interface. Apollo leverages the latest technology, including global cloud-based infrastructure, massively parallel processing, and new computer graphics algorithms to implement naturalistic workflows designed by artists. The result is a perfect blend of the latest technology, providing intuitive and immersive tools that allow artists to focus on creativity. The unprecedented quality of animation and lighting in “How to Train Your Dragon 2” is clear evidence of the success of this platform.

Through the application of real-time parallel character evaluation underneath an animator-conceived user interface, Premo allows artists to get back to drawing their characters and landscapes with digital pens and interactive displays, resembling the traditional way of drawing images with pencil and paper. To wit, animators can now work with fully realized, high-fidelity characters, full backgrounds and sets - and can work with multiple characters at the same time. Animators can seamlessly switch between shots and characters without stopping to reconfigure their workspace, as well as make camera tweaks and edits without stopping animated playback.
Torch is a lighting software that empowers individual artists to create a vast amount of imagery through the management of millions of files across 12 creative departments, among hundreds of artists, and from thousands of iterations. Artists easily navigate those files with an intuitive graph interface and can ensure that the latest updates are brought into the right images at the right time. Using Torch, artists view lighting setups on film quality assets as they will appear in the film, without waiting for the computer to batch render the images. The result is more intricate lighting sequences that, prior to Torch, would have been impossible to create within an animated film.
Apollo has changed DreamWorks Animation’s entire approach to the production process. What was once a linear process of simplify-edit-view, is now a completely interactive, fluid creative interface. Apollo leverages the latest technology, including global cloud-based infrastructure, massively parallel processing, and new computer graphics algorithms to implement naturalistic workflows designed by artists. The result is a perfect blend of the latest technology, providing intuitive and immersive tools that allow artists to focus on creativity. The unprecedented quality of animation and lighting in “How to Train Your Dragon 2” is clear evidence of the success of this platform.
