Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez baptised June 6, 1599 -- August 6, 1660) was a Spanish painter who was the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV and one of the most important painters of the Spanish Golden Age. He was an individualistic artist of the contemporary Baroque period, important as a portrait artist. In addition to numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family, other notable European figures, and commoners, culminating in the production of his masterpiece Las Meninas (1656).

En el siglo XVII, Sevilla era la segunda ciudad más importante de España, tras Madrid. Al ser la sede de la Casa de la Contratación, todo el comercio que llegaba de América pasaba por su puerto, generando una ingente cantidad de riqueza. En esta alegre y bulliciosa ciudad nació el pintor más genial de todos los tiempos, don Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez, en el año 1599.
Miembro de una familia hidalga venida a menos, el aprendizaje artístico de Velázquez se inició cuando contaba once años, en el taller de Francisco Pacheco. Pacheco era un pintor manierista que estaba muy bien relacionado con la élite cultural de Sevilla, organizando todas las semanas en su casa una tertulia a la que acudía lo más granado de la cultura urbana, entre otros el futuro conde-duque de Olivares.
En el taller de Pacheco estuvo el joven Velázquez unos siete años, realizando labores de aprendiz hasta conseguir el título de pintor en 1617. La relación entre Velázquez y Pacheco se estrecha al año siguiente, cuando Diego casa con Juana Pacheco, hija de su maestro. Estos enlaces entre el mejor aprendiz de un maestro y la hija de éste eran muy frecuentes en el sistema gremial de la época, ya que permitían continuar la tradición familiar.
Entre 1617 y 1623 se desarrolla la primera etapa de la pintura velazqueña, la etapa sevillana. El estilo del joven pintor difiere del de su maestro, ya que se interesa por el naturalismo tenebrista, influido por Caravaggio, conocido en Sevilla posiblemente gracias al flujo mercantil de la ciudad. Tampoco debemos olvidar la influencia en esta primera etapa de los pintores flamencos, también presentes sus obras en la capital hispalense. Las pinturas de Velázquez están protagonizadas por personajes de carne y hueso, quizás tomados de la propia familia del pintor, queriéndose ver en ellos retratos de las personas más cercanas a él, como su esposa, su suegro o sus dos hijas. La producción velazqueña en Sevilla puede dividirse en varios temas: asuntos religiosos, asuntos cotidianos y retratos. Surgen así magníficas obras como la Vieja friendo huevos, protagonizada por una anciana que cocina en un hornillo de barro, o el Aguador de Sevilla, en la que un hombre nos ofrece el agua que porta en sus cántaros. Tonalidades oscuras, fondos neutros y un acentuado realismo caracterizan los trabajos de esta época. El éxito de su pintura viene determinado por una curiosa noticia: gracias a las ganancias obtenidas, Velázquez adquiere dos casas que serán destinadas al alquiler... --

Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈdjeɣo roˈðriɣeθ ðe ˈsilβa i beˈlaθkeθ]; June 6, 1599 – August 6, 1660) was a Spanish painter who was the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV. He was an individualistic artist of the contemporary Baroque period, important as a portrait artist. In addition to numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family, other notable European figures, and commoners, culminating in the production of his masterpiece Las Meninas (1656).
From the first quarter of the nineteenth century, Velázquez's artwork was a model for the realist and impressionist painters, in particular Édouard Manet. Since that time, more modern artists, including Spain's Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, as well as the Anglo-Irish painter Francis Bacon, have paid tribute to Velázquez by recreating several of his most famous works.
Born in Seville, Andalusia, Spain, Diego, the first child of Juan Rodríguez de Silva and Jerónima Velázquez, was baptized at the church of St Peter in Seville on Sunday, June 6, 1599. This christening must have followed the baby's birth by no more than a few weeks, or perhaps only a few days. Velázquez's paternal grandparents, Diego da Silva and Maria Rodrigues, had moved to Seville from their native Porto, Portugal decades earlier. As for Juan Rodríguez de Silva and his wife, both were born in Seville, and were married, also at the church of St Peter, on December 28, 1597. They came from the lesser nobility and were accorded the privileges generally enjoyed by the gentry.

En esta alegre y bulliciosa ciudad nació el pintor más genial de todos los tiempos, don Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez, en el año 1599.
Miembro de una familia hidalga venida a menos, el aprendizaje artístico de Velázquez se inició cuando contaba once años, en el taller de Francisco Pacheco. Pacheco era un pintor manierista que estaba muy bien relacionado con la élite cultural de Sevilla, organizando todas las semanas en su casa una tertulia a la que acudía lo más granado de la cultura urbana, entre otros el futuro conde-duque de Olivares.
En el taller de Pacheco estuvo el joven Velázquez unos siete años, realizando labores de aprendiz hasta conseguir el título de pintor en 1617. La relación entre Velázquez y Pacheco se estrecha al año siguiente, cuando Diego casa con Juana Pacheco, hija de su maestro. Estos enlaces entre el mejor aprendiz de un maestro y la hija de éste eran muy frecuentes en el sistema gremial de la época, ya que permitían continuar la tradición familiar.
Entre 1617 y 1623 se desarrolla la primera etapa de la pintura velazqueña, la etapa sevillana. El estilo del joven pintor difiere del de su maestro, ya que se interesa por el naturalismo tenebrista, influido por Caravaggio, conocido en Sevilla posiblemente gracias al flujo mercantil de la ciudad. Tampoco debemos olvidar la influencia en esta primera etapa de los pintores flamencos, también presentes sus obras en la capital hispalense. Las pinturas de Velázquez están protagonizadas por personajes de carne y hueso, quizás tomados de la propia familia del pintor, queriéndose ver en ellos retratos de las personas más cercanas a él, como su esposa, su suegro o sus dos hijas. La producción velazqueña en Sevilla puede dividirse en varios temas: asuntos religiosos, asuntos cotidianos y retratos. Surgen así magníficas obras como la Vieja friendo huevos, protagonizada por una anciana que cocina en un hornillo de barro, o el Aguador de Sevilla, en la que un hombre nos ofrece el agua que porta en sus cántaros. Tonalidades oscuras, fondos neutros y un acentuado realismo caracterizan los trabajos de esta época. El éxito de su pintura viene determinado por una curiosa noticia: gracias a las ganancias obtenidas, Velázquez adquiere dos casas que serán destinadas al alquiler... --

In a new spectacular hour-long variety special featuring musical numbers and comedy sketches, every Nickelodeon star under the sun, including Brec Bassinger, Buddy Handleson and Coy Stewart from "Bella and the Bulldogs", Benjamin Lil P-Nut” Flores, Jr. from "Game Shakers", Kira Kosarin and Jack Griffo from "The Thundermans", Lizzy Greene, Aidan Gallagher, Casey Simpson and Mace Coronel from "Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn", Isabela Moner from "100 Things to Do Before High School", Jace Norman from "Henry Danger", and Breanna Yde from "School of Rock", shows up for the most amazing holiday party ever.

Nickelodeon's new superhero family is ready for blast off! Don't miss the series premiere of Nickelodeon's brand-new live-action comedy series, The Thundermans, on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT).
Phoebe (Kira Kosarin) and Max Thunderman (Jack Griffo) are 14-year-old fraternal twins turbocharged by freeze breath and the power to move objects via telekinesis. Phoebe, a good-natured sister, always tries to do the right thing, while Max, a troublemaker, dreams of one day becoming a super villain. Brother Billy (Diego Velazquez) moves at super speed, while younger sister Nora (Addison Riecke) cuts solid objects with her laser beam eyes. Rounding out the family are parents Hank (Chris Tallman), who possesses extraordinary strength and the ability to fly, and Barb (Rosa Blasi), who can generate lightning from her hands. Ultimately, the family must attempt keep their powers under wraps and lead a "normal" life... but can life ever be "normal" in a family of superheroes?
In the series premiere, "Phoebe vs. Max," a prank war between Max and Phoebe gets out of hand when Max pranks his sister on picture day at school and she finally decides to take on the family's troublemaker once and for all.
