Jay Bulger catches up with the irascible Cream drummer Ginger Baker at his ranch in South Africa. He reflects on his sixty-year career that led him to sellout stadium concerts.
HE’S long had a reputation for making even an infamous rock curmudgeon like Lou Reed come across like someone’s avuncular uncle, so I wasn’t relishing the prospect of an early morning phone chat with drumming legend Ginger Baker.
It was a feeling made worse by my foolishly having read other journalists’ previous run-ins with the man who, during his time in ’60s supergroup Cream, laid down the polyrhythmic beat to some of the most famous rock songs ever penned.And, as I quickly found out, choosing to wax lyrical about how much I loved Sunshine Of Your Love or Eric Clapton’s guitar playing on White Room wasn’t the best way of getting him to warm to me.
“Oh God, Cream’s a bloody albatross around my neck,” mutters the 72-year-old musical veteran who, in true septuagenarian fashion, duly informs me he’ll be 73 in a few weeks.
And the more I talk to the superannuated South Londoner – who, having somehow resembled old man Steptoe since his 30s has now come to look curiously ageless – about the band which has brought him the most fame and adulation the less it seems like a good idea.
“Cream wasn’t even rock and roll, you know,” he snorts. “I mean, 80% of it was total improvisation, and what’s another word for improvised music?”
‘Er, jazz?’ I squeak.
“Exactly, jazz,” he adds, slowly thawing. “In fact, I don’t think we ever played any song the same way twice, that’s how together we were on stage.
“Don’t get me wrong though, I’m proud of everything we did – a lot of it was of an incredibly high standard, much higher than any other pop group achieved,” adds Baker.
It’s odd then that he’s so circumspect about giving it pride of place on his CV.
“The main problem is that because of Cream people tend to think I’m very rich, but I’m not,” he sighs, taking a long, hard drag on a cigarette.
“I’m actually really struggling financially because I’ve managed to outlive all the money we made and now I’ve got to work again.
“There’s no fortune stashed away for me in some Swiss bank unfortunately, so any retirement plans ain’t happening quite yet.”
By his own admittance then, Ginger Baker’s Jazz Confusion – the incredible outfit he’ll be debuting at Brecon Jazz tonight, featuring James Brown’s sax man Peewee Ellis, bassist Alec Dankworth, and African percussionist Abass Dodoo – just seems like a means to an end for the star.
“Would I be doing it if I didn’t have to? Hmm, dunno – I do enjoy it though because jazz is exactly my thing,” says Baker.
I certainly don’t want to go back to playing rock and roll and all that stuff, unless I was offered some really lucrative deal.
“It’s good though in a way, I feel like a kid having to prove himself again.”
Briefly he recalls his 16-year-old self in 1956, being dared by friends at a party to sit behind a drum kit for the first time.
“I just discovered I could play – had absolutely no idea how, I just could,” he chuckles throatily.

"Farewell Concert" is the live recording of the Cream's final concert at the Royal Albert Hall on November 26th, 1968.
Directed by Tony Palmer, the film incorporates pieces of six performances with narration by BBC announcer Patrick Allen, along with interviews with the band members themselves, showcasing their playing abilities.
The film has often been criticized for both its mediocre sound and visual effects.
In 2005, a special extended edition of the concert appeared featuring full versions of all songs separated from the narration and interviews. The new version featured digitally remastered sound and video including three bonus songs.

The man known as The Greatest Ever Rock Drummer releases Live 1970. This studio date was the only one played by the band in October 1970 and would be the final concert in Germany for the Airforce band before they split. The performance captured by the cameras features Sunshine Of Your Love both as part of an extended jam which included Early In The Morning a featured track from the first Airforce album and also later in the set as a stand alone performance and 12 Gates Of The City a Graham Bond composition which featured on the second Airforce album. The total running time of this performance is over fifty minutes and for transmission on the 20th October 1970 the decision was made to edit the performance and therefore the great majority of this historic and rare television appearance has remained in the vaults. Ginger Baker remains a hugely influential artist and as such commands a massive fan base most of whom will be interested in this rarely seen archive performance.

Peter Edward "Ginger" Baker (born 19 August 1939, Lewisham, South London) is an English drummer, best known for his work with Cream and Blind Faith. He is also known for his numerous associations with World music, mainly the use of African influences. He has also had other collaborations such as with Gary Moore, Hawkwind and Public Image Ltd.
Baker's drumming attracted attention for its flamboyance, showmanship and his use of two bass drums instead of the conventional single bass kick drum (following a similar set-up used by Louie Bellson during his days with Duke Ellington). Although a firmly established rock drummer and praised as "Rock's first superstar drummer", he prefers being called a jazz drummer. Baker's influence has extended to drummers of both genres, including Billy Cobham, Peter Criss, Bill Ward, Ian Paice, Nick Mason, and John Bonham. AllMusic has described him as "the most influential percussionist of the 1960s" and stated that "virtually every drummer of every heavy metal band that has followed since that time has sought to emulate some aspect of Baker's playing."

David Michael Letterman (born April 12, 1947) is an American television host and comedian. He hosts the late night television talk show, Late Show with David Letterman, broadcast on CBS. Letterman has been a fixture on late night television since the 1982 debut of Late Night with David Letterman on NBC. Letterman recently surpassed friend and mentor Johnny Carson for having the longest late-night hosting career in the United States of America.
Letterman is also a television and film producer. His company Worldwide Pants produces his show as well as its network follow-up The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Worldwide Pants has also produced several prime-time comedies, the most successful of which was Everybody Loves Raymond, currently in syndication.
In 1996, David Letterman was ranked #45 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time.
Letterman was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. His father, Harry Joseph Letterman (April 1915 – February 1973), was a florist of British descent; his mother Dorothy Letterman (née Hofert, now Dorothy Mengering), a Presbyterian church secretary of German descent, is an occasional figure on the show, usually at holidays and birthdays.

Robert William Gary Moore (4 April 1952 – 6 February 2011), was a Northern Irish musician, most widely recognised as a blues singer and guitarist.
In a career dating back to the 1960s, Moore played with artists including Phil Lynott and Brian Downey during his teens, leading him to memberships with the Irish bands Skid Row and Thin Lizzy on three separate occasions. Moore shared the stage with such blues and rock luminaries as B.B. King, Albert King, Colosseum II, George Harrison and Greg Lake, as well as having a successful solo career. He guested on a number of albums recorded by high profile musicians, including a cameo appearance playing the lead guitar solo on "She's My Baby" from Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3.
Moore started performing at a young age, having picked up a battered acoustic guitar at the age of eight. He got his first quality guitar at the age of 14, learning to play the right-handed instrument in the standard way despite being left-handed. He moved to Dublin in 1968 at the age of 16. His early musical influences were artists such as Albert King, Elvis Presley, The Shadows and The Beatles. Later, having seen Jimi Hendrix and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in his home town of Belfast, his own style was developing into a blues-rock sound that would be the dominant form of his career in music.

Cream 1966 - 1968 Cream - Ginger Baker, Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce - the world's first super-group was born in 1966... CREAM MYTHICAL BLUES GODS by Howard Druckman The virtuoso playing of Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker made Cream the first band of soloists. In their two year career they brought the blues to a whole generation of white rockers and spawned legions of power trios, boogie bands and heavy metal groups... According to rock critic Dave Marsh, Cream created “the fastest, loudest, most overpowering blues-based rock ever heard, particularly onstage.” Though they lasted only two years, Cream sold 15 million records; earned the first certified platinum album in history (for the double set Wheels of Fire); played to standing-room-only audiences across Europe and North America; and redefined the instrumentalist’s role in rock. Indeed, the trio is often cited as the first “supergroup.” Eric Clapton’s passion and fluidity on guitar inspired a spate of “Clapton is God” graffiti in London; Ginger Baker’s brutal intensity helped create the tradition of the drum solo in rock; and Jack Bruce was one of the first bassists to introduce a jazz sensibility to a hard rock format. Eric Clapton, born in March, 1945, was first inspired by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, and later by Jerry Lee Lewis. He quickly graduated from a plastic guitar to a real one, and from small-town Ripley to cosmopolitan London. There, he immersed himself in the nascent British blues scene, playing in the Roosters and Casey Jones & the Engineers before achieving an axemaster’s reputation with the Yardbirds and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. In the last Bluesbreakers lineup, Jack Bruce was playing bass. He left to join Manfred Mann, but not before Clapton had become excited enough by his work to want to form a band. When drummer Ginger Baker, about to leave the jazz- tinged Graham Bond Organisation, asked Clapton if he wanted to start a band, the trio became inevitable. Despite animosity between Bruce and Baker, Cream was formed in July, 1966. They made their debut at the 1966 Windsor Festival in England, and rapidly established their legendary live style — a combination of high-volume blues jamming, extended solos and flashy instrumental showmanship.

Jay Bulger catches up with the irascible Cream drummer Ginger Baker at his ranch in South Africa. He reflects on his sixty-year career that led him to sellout stadium concerts.
HE’S long had a reputation for making even an infamous rock curmudgeon like Lou Reed come across like someone’s avuncular uncle, so I wasn’t relishing the prospect of an early morning phone chat with drumming legend Ginger Baker.
It was a feeling made worse by my foolishly having read other journalists’ previous run-ins with the man who, during his time in ’60s supergroup Cream, laid down the polyrhythmic beat to some of the most famous rock songs ever penned.And, as I quickly found out, choosing to wax lyrical about how much I loved Sunshine Of Your Love or Eric Clapton’s guitar playing on White Room wasn’t the best way of getting him to warm to me.
“Oh God, Cream’s a bloody albatross around my neck,” mutters the 72-year-old musical veteran who, in true septuagenarian fashion, duly informs me he’ll be 73 in a few weeks.
And the more I talk to the superannuated South Londoner – who, having somehow resembled old man Steptoe since his 30s has now come to look curiously ageless – about the band which has brought him the most fame and adulation the less it seems like a good idea.
“Cream wasn’t even rock and roll, you know,” he snorts. “I mean, 80% of it was total improvisation, and what’s another word for improvised music?”
‘Er, jazz?’ I squeak.
“Exactly, jazz,” he adds, slowly thawing. “In fact, I don’t think we ever played any song the same way twice, that’s how together we were on stage.
“Don’t get me wrong though, I’m proud of everything we did – a lot of it was of an incredibly high standard, much higher than any other pop group achieved,” adds Baker.
It’s odd then that he’s so circumspect about giving it pride of place on his CV.
“The main problem is that because of Cream people tend to think I’m very rich, but I’m not,” he sighs, taking a long, hard drag on a cigarette.
“I’m actually really struggling financially because I’ve managed to outlive all the money we made and now I’ve got to work again.
“There’s no fortune stashed away for me in some Swiss bank unfortunately, so any retirement plans ain’t happening quite yet.”
By his own admittance then, Ginger Baker’s Jazz Confusion – the incredible outfit he’ll be debuting at Brecon Jazz tonight, featuring James Brown’s sax man Peewee Ellis, bassist Alec Dankworth, and African percussionist Abass Dodoo – just seems like a means to an end for the star.
“Would I be doing it if I didn’t have to? Hmm, dunno – I do enjoy it though because jazz is exactly my thing,” says Baker.
I certainly don’t want to go back to playing rock and roll and all that stuff, unless I was offered some really lucrative deal.
“It’s good though in a way, I feel like a kid having to prove himself again.”
Briefly he recalls his 16-year-old self in 1956, being dared by friends at a party to sit behind a drum kit for the first time.
“I just discovered I could play – had absolutely no idea how, I just could,” he chuckles throatily.

“Oh God, Cream’s a bloody albatross around my neck,” mutters the 72-year-old musical veteran who, in true septuagenarian fashion, duly informs me he’ll be 73 in a few weeks.
And the more I talk to the superannuated South Londoner – who, having somehow resembled old man Steptoe since his 30s has now come to look curiously ageless – about the band which has brought him the most fame and adulation the less it seems like a good idea.
“Cream wasn’t even rock and roll, you know,” he snorts. “I mean, 80% of it was total improvisation, and what’s another word for improvised music?”
‘Er, jazz?’ I squeak.
“Exactly, jazz,” he adds, slowly thawing. “In fact, I don’t think we ever played any song the same way twice, that’s how together we were on stage.
“Don’t get me wrong though, I’m proud of everything we did – a lot of it was of an incredibly high standard, much higher than any other pop group achieved,” adds Baker.
It’s odd then that he’s so circumspect about giving it pride of place on his CV.
“The main problem is that because of Cream people tend to think I’m very rich, but I’m not,” he sighs, taking a long, hard drag on a cigarette.
“I’m actually really struggling financially because I’ve managed to outlive all the money we made and now I’ve got to work again.
“There’s no fortune stashed away for me in some Swiss bank unfortunately, so any retirement plans ain’t happening quite yet.”
By his own admittance then, Ginger Baker’s Jazz Confusion – the incredible outfit he’ll be debuting at Brecon Jazz tonight, featuring James Brown’s sax man Peewee Ellis, bassist Alec Dankworth, and African percussionist Abass Dodoo – just seems like a means to an end for the star.
“Would I be doing it if I didn’t have to? Hmm, dunno – I do enjoy it though because jazz is exactly my thing,” says Baker.
I certainly don’t want to go back to playing rock and roll and all that stuff, unless I was offered some really lucrative deal.
“It’s good though in a way, I feel like a kid having to prove himself again.”
Briefly he recalls his 16-year-old self in 1956, being dared by friends at a party to sit behind a drum kit for the first time.
“I just discovered I could play – had absolutely no idea how, I just could,” he chuckles throatily.

This studio date was the only one played by the band in October 1970 and would be the final concert in Germany for the Airforce band before they split. The performance captured by the cameras features Sunshine Of Your Love both as part of an extended jam which included Early In The Morning a featured track from the first Airforce album and also later in the set as a stand alone performance and 12 Gates Of The City a Graham Bond composition which featured on the second Airforce album. The total running time of this performance is over fifty minutes and for transmission on the 20th October 1970 the decision was made to edit the performance and therefore the great majority of this historic and rare television appearance has remained in the vaults. Ginger Baker remains a hugely influential artist and as such commands a massive fan base most of whom will be interested in this rarely seen archive performance.

The virtuoso playing of Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker made Cream the first band of soloists. In their two year career they brought the blues to a whole generation of white rockers and spawned legions of power trios, boogie bands and heavy metal groups...
According to rock critic Dave Marsh, Cream created “the fastest, loudest, most overpowering blues-based rock ever heard, particularly onstage.” Though they lasted only two years, Cream sold 15 million records; earned the first certified platinum album in history (for the double set Wheels of Fire); played to standing-room-only audiences across Europe and North America; and redefined the instrumentalist’s role in rock.
Indeed, the trio is often cited as the first “supergroup.” Eric Clapton’s passion and fluidity on guitar inspired a spate of “Clapton is God” graffiti in London; Ginger Baker’s brutal intensity helped create the tradition of the drum solo in rock; and Jack Bruce was one of the first bassists to introduce a jazz sensibility to a hard rock format.
Eric Clapton, born in March, 1945, was first inspired by Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, and later by Jerry Lee Lewis. He quickly graduated from a plastic guitar to a real one, and from small-town Ripley to cosmopolitan London. There, he immersed himself in the nascent British blues scene, playing in the Roosters and Casey Jones & the Engineers before achieving an axemaster’s reputation with the Yardbirds and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers.
In the last Bluesbreakers lineup, Jack Bruce was playing bass. He left to join Manfred Mann, but not before Clapton had become excited enough by his work to want to form a band. When drummer Ginger Baker, about to leave the jazz- tinged Graham Bond Organisation, asked Clapton if he wanted to start a band, the trio became inevitable. Despite animosity between Bruce and Baker, Cream was formed in July, 1966.
They made their debut at the 1966 Windsor Festival in England, and rapidly established their legendary live style — a combination of high-volume blues jamming, extended solos and flashy instrumental showmanship.

Peter Edward "Ginger" Baker (born 19 August 1939 in Lewisham, South London) is an English drummer who played with Cream and Blind Faith. He is also known for his numerous associations with World music, mainly the use of African influences.He has also had other collaborations such as with Gary Moore, Hawkwind and Public Image Ltd.
Baker's drumming attracted attention for its flamboyance, showmanship and his use of two bass drums instead of the conventional single bass kick drum (following a similar set-up used by Louie Bellson during his days with Duke Ellington). Although a firmly established rock drummer and praised as "Rock's first superstar drummer", he prefers being called a jazz drummer. Baker's influence has extended to drummers of both genres, including Billy Cobham, Peter Criss, Bill Ward, Ian Paice, Nick Mason,and John Bonham. All Music has described him as "the most influential percussionist of the 1960s" and stated that "virtually every drummer of every heavy metal band that has followed since that time has sought to emulate some aspect of Baker's playing."
While at times performing in a similar way to Keith Moon from The Who, Baker also employs a more restrained style influenced by the British jazz groups he heard during the late 1950s and early 1960s. In his early days as a drummer, he performed lengthy drum solos, the best known being the five-minute drum solo "Toad" from Cream's debut album Fresh Cream (1966). He is also noted for using a variety of other percussion instruments and for his application of African rhythms. He would often emphasize the flam, a drum rudiment in which both sticks attack the drumhead at almost the same time, giving a heavy thunderous sound.

Baker's drumming attracted attention for its flamboyance, showmanship and his use of two bass drums instead of the conventional single bass kick drum (following a similar set-up used by Louie Bellson during his days with Duke Ellington). Although a firmly established rock drummer and praised as "Rock's first superstar drummer", he prefers being called a jazz drummer. Baker's influence has extended to drummers of both genres, including Billy Cobham, Peter Criss, Bill Ward, Ian Paice, Nick Mason,and John Bonham. All Music has described him as "the most influential percussionist of the 1960s" and stated that "virtually every drummer of every heavy metal band that has followed since that time has sought to emulate some aspect of Baker's playing."
While at times performing in a similar way to Keith Moon from The Who, Baker also employs a more restrained style influenced by the British jazz groups he heard during the late 1950s and early 1960s. In his early days as a drummer, he performed lengthy drum solos, the best known being the five-minute drum solo "Toad" from Cream's debut album Fresh Cream (1966). He is also noted for using a variety of other percussion instruments and for his application of African rhythms. He would often emphasize the flam, a drum rudiment in which both sticks attack the drumhead at almost the same time, giving a heavy thunderous sound.

Ye Ye De Smell: Ye ye de smell is about people getting what they deserve-reaping what you sow. If you flirt with another person’s wife, you shouldn’t feel bad if people do the same to you. Literally meaning: bullshit stinks. It implies that if you give people bullshit, you should not be surprised if you get the same back from others.
Egbe Mi O (Carry Me I Want To Die): “Egbe Me” in Yoruba language means: Carry me. In this song, Fela is singing about the different kinds of things that happen to you while you dance. How could you go into trance while dancing? How in a state of musical trance, the traditional beads women wear under their skirts break without the woman noticing.
