Very Brief:
Daryl Hall has released 5 albums of original material outside of his work with John Oates.  His second solo album came in 1986 and was entitled ‘Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine’.  Four singles were released from the album and two of them reached the Top 40, today’s vinyl rip of “Foolish Pride” and “Dreamtime” which was a Top 5 hit.  “Foolish Pride” was written by Daryl Hall and produced by Hall, David A. Stewart and Tom “T-Bone” Wolk.  Additional production and mixing on this 12″ courtesy of Shep Pettibone.

Tonio K (1987) I’m Supposed To Have Sex With You 12″ Promo

Very Brief:
Steven M. Krikorian goes by the stage name Tonio K and has had a long and varied music career.  From performing and recording with Buddy Holly’s band, The Crickets, in the early 70s to solo work in the late 70s and 80s to writing hit songs in the 90s, he has been compared with the likes of Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson.  Most of Tonio K’s back catalog falls mainly into the rock n roll genre which makes this single from the Summer School soundtrack seem really out of place.  To compound the oddity of this record, Tonio K is the songwriter of Vanessa Williams and Brian McKnight’s #1 hit “Love Is” in 1993.  Versatile?  Hell, I reckon he is, the man has a varied body of work.  “I’m Supposed To Have Sex With You” appeared on the soundtrack of Mark Harmon’s 1987 movie Summer School.  The song features inane lyrics such as “I’m supposed to have sex with you, we’ll have the sex now, I’m supposed to have sex with you, the sex is next”.  Probably one of the oddest, most out of place artists that ever charted on Billboard’s Dance charts?

Rick Springfield (1983) Human Touch 12″ Promo

Very Brief:
A novel trend in the eighties for pop/rock artists was to have their songs remixed for the dance floors.  A lot of artists, not traditionally known for dance hits, saw their tracks get the remix treatment in search of club play, seeking out any extra promotion they could get for their music. John Luongo, a Boston DJ, seemed to be the go to guy for a lot of mainstream artists such as Aerosmith, Greg Kihn, Don Henley, ZZ Top and Rick Springfield.  “Human Touch” is a song written by Springfield for his 1983 album, ‘Living In Oz’.  It was the 8th of 17 US Top 40 hits for Rick during the period of 1972-1988.

The Space Cowboy (2002) I Would Die 4 U UK 12″

Very Brief:
So, this track is well over 10 years old and until I began researching who The Space Cowboy was, I never gave much thought to him. Just figured it was some one-off techno track that came and went. Well!  I was incorrect. Nicolas Jean-Pierre Dresti is a French-born English singer-songwriter, DJ, and producer that goes by the name The Space Cowboy. His first official single was a house-y cover of Prince’s “I Would Die 4 U” on Fatboy Slim’s record label Southern Fried Records.  The single reached #55 on the UK Singles Chart and was the only single released from his first album, ‘Across The Sky’.  As most of you know, I’m pretty much oblivious to music released after the 90s so, it was news to me to read that The Space Cowboy is also the DJ for Lady Gaga. He has participated in numerous Lady Gaga recordings as an artist, songwriter, producer and remixer.

Different Gear vs The Police (2000) When The World Is Running Down (You Can’t Go Wrong) Promo UK 12″

Very Brief:
In 2000, a pair of British DJ’s named Gino Scaletti and Quinn Whalley remixed The Police’s track “When the World Is Running Down, You Make the Best of What’s Still Around” from their ‘Zenyatta Mondatta’ album of 1980.  It circulated around as a bootleg for some time with no one knowing exactly who put it together.  It was eventually learned that Scaletti and Whalley were behind it, going by the moniker Different Gear.  London based Pagan Records got permission from The Police and A&M Records to release the remix commercially and the single was a #28 hit on the UK Pop Charts.  This 12″ vinyl rip  of “When The World Is Running Down (You Can’t Go Wrong)” features the Original Bootleg Mix and a Dub Mix.  This is one of those rare occasions that I have picked up a post-90’s 12″ and really liked what I heard on the record.  If you’re a fan of The Police and haven’t heard this, I encourage you to download this rip and give it a listen.

Jimmy G And The Tackheads (1985) Break My Heart 12″

Very Brief:
In 1985, two giants in the world of funk teamed up on a studio project that produced the R&B hit “Break My Heart”.  Jimmy G And The Tackheads is the brainchild of George Clinton and Steve Washington of the group Slave.  Other regulars from the P-Funk stable involved were DeWayne “Blackbyrd” McKnight, and Garry Shider.  Jimmy G is actually Jimmy Giles, the younger brother of George Clinton.  The project resulted in a complete album entitled ‘The Federation Of Tackheads‘ which was reissued on CD in Europe in 2004.  The versions on this 12″ were not included on the CD so, it appears both sides of this record remain vinyl only at this time.

Orbit (Featuring Carol Hall) (1983) All Shook Up 12″

Very Brief:
“All Shook Up” is the third cover record featured here at Fun With Vinyl by Orbit.  Previously we’ve visited with 1982’s “The Beat Goes On” and 1984’s “Too Busy Thinking About My Baby“.  This single actually falls in between the previous two as it was released in 1983.  This time around, the Don Was produced project, which featured Luis Resto and Carol Hall, tackled Elvis Presley’s #1 hit from 1957 that was written by Otis Blackwell.  Don Was, most famous for the group Was (Not Was), comes from the roots of the Detroit dance music scene.  A very informative interview with Don can be found here at DJhistory.com.

Karyn White (1991) Do Unto Me / Walkin’ The Dog 12″

Very Brief:
Karyn White released her second album in September of 1991 entitled ‘Ritual Of Love’.  “Do Unto Me” was the fourth and final single from the LP.  All four singles reached the Top 40 on the Billboard R&B charts and the first single, “Romantic“, reached #1 on both the Billboard Pop and R&B charts.  While White’s debut album was primarily produced by LA & Babyface, her second release was primarily under the direction of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.  White loved their production so much that in 1992 she married Terry Lewis.  Sadly that union dissolved in 1999.  An added bonus on today’s 12” post is 4 mixes of “Walkin’ The Dog” by Tommy Musto on the flip side.  “Walkin’ The Dog” was White’s third single from ‘Ritual Of Love’.

Karyn White (1988) Secret Rendezvous 12″ Promo

Very Brief:
In 1988, Karyn White released her debut album which was simply titled ‘Karyn White’.  “Secret Rendezvous” was the fourth of five singles from the album and was her fourth straight Top 5 single on the R&B singles chart (the previous 3 reached #1).  Though it failed to top the R&B charts, it did grab the #1 spot on the Billboard Dance charts, peaking at the top on July 1, 1989.  “Secret Rendezvous” was her only single that topped the Dance charts.  This single has often been requested here at Fun With Vinyl, I hope it was worth the wait…
