Plot: Holy Man is the story of Douglas White, an 88 year old Lakota Sioux medicine man from Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, who spent 17 years in federal prison for a crime he did not commit. During the making of this film, filmmakers uncovered new evidence of White's innocence and brought the case back to Federal Court. Holy Man offers a rare glimpse into the mysterious world of Lakota religion, their intimate connection to the land, and a provocative expose of the systemic injustice that Native Americans face in the criminal justice system.

Quotes:
Conquering Bear: You looked at me and saw what happens to a man of peace in times of war. Now I see what happens to a man of war in times of peace. Come with me now, Crazy Horse.
Conquering Bear: Anyone can kill a man. Anyone can take a scalp. But only the bravest warrior can count coup and fight with no weapon at all.
[real-life quote]::[Epilogue - Black Elk speaks of the deceased Crazy Horse]::Black Elk: It does not matter where his body lies; there the grass is growing... but where his Spirit lies, that would be a good place to be.
Reporter: What about the Indians, General? And aren't the Black Hills officially Sioux land from the treaty of 1868?::General George Armstrong Custer: Whatever the right or wrong isn't the question. The Indians must be dispossessed. The practical question is how the inevitable can be accomplished with the least inhumanity to the Indians.::Reporter: Didn't General Polk say that?::General George Armstrong Custer: I believe in destiny, you see. For individuals as well as nations. Nothing can stop the movement of history.
[prologue]::Conquering Bear: In 1865, the Civil War ended. As the flow of settlers heading westward increased, so did the disputes between the government, the settlers and the Indians. Conflict was inevitable....
Red Cloud: Our way of life is finished. There is only the white man's way, and we will learn it... or we will all die.::Crazy Horse: I speak only for myself. I'll live the way of my fathers... as a warrior.
General George Armstrong Custer: They are a brave people. Their time has passed. History moves on.
Conquering Bear: To be a leader among men. That's what it was to be made a shirt wearer among the Lakota. Shirt wearers led the people and protected them at all times. Shirt wearing was the honor that usually went to the sons of chiefs and tribal leaders.
Crazy Horse: My first time in battle, I went against my vision. That's why I was wounded.::Worm: There will be plenty more battles, my son. Remember what your vision promised: you'll be a strong shield for the people.
Black Buffalo woman: Don't forget me.::Crazy Horse: I could sooner forget to breathe.

Grant: Boundaries, where the land ends.::Sioux Interpreter: [Interpreter translates to Red Cloud, who replies to him] It is lies.::Red Cloud: [Grant, outraged by his response, stands to his feet. Red Cloud also does the same and mutters a word of English] Lies.

Kate Bighead: They call it the Fetterman massacre, after the officer who swore that with 80 men, he could wipe out the entire Sioux nation. It was no massacre. Them soldiers were stupid, and they rode to their deaths.::[Indian warriors fire barrages of arrows at Fetterman's troops]
George Armstrong Custer: [after pursuing a group of Indians on horseback who started to scatter] They scattered. They scattered! [Fires his rifle in the air] Give me a civilized war! An enemy I can find and beat! An enemy who fights by the rules!
Major Marcus Reno: [Reno and Benteen discover the remains of Custer's annihilated cavalry at the Little Bighorn] Oh, how white they look.::Major Marcus Reno: There he is. Damn him. Ah, he'll never fight anymore.

Quotes:
[first lines]::[Custer rides into stable where a game of craps is under way]::Sergeant James Bustard: Go ahead and shoot. Go on, shoot. Shoot! Shoot!::[Game continues]::Sergeant James Bustard: Hold it! I win!::[when Bustard reaches for his winnings, Custer steps on the cash]::Custer: What is your name, Private?::Sergeant James Bustard: James Bustard.::Custer: Do you count yourself a tough man?::Sergeant James Bustard: None tougher in the Seventh or any other damned Yankee regiment, General, suh. But I'm forgettin', it isn't General anymore is it?
Custer: My name is George Armstrong Custer. Rank: Lieutenant Colonel, United States Cavalry, formerly Brevet Major General. Found guilty of dereliction of duty and suspended from rank for one year. By order of General Phil Sheridan reinstated commander of the Seventh Regiment as of now. The Seventh was my first command after the war. I was proud of it. I intend to be proud of it again.
Custer: Is that Captain Reno bearing down on us?::Captain Myles Keogh: Oh, then you're acquainted?::Custer: Captain Reno never quite got over the fact that I followed him in West Point and now he follows me. The salt that really burns the wound is that I graduated 34th in a class of 34.
Captain Marcus A. Reno: The boy general. You'd think they'd have more sense then to reinstate him.::Captain Myles Keogh: Why not?::Captain Marcus A. Reno: I've served with him before. Look at him: 28 years old, arrogant, conceited... never mind, you'll find out.::Captain Myles Keogh: Aye, I'm lookin' forward to it.
Crazy Horse: Do you have many such guns?::William R. Tymen: As many as you want and all the shells you can shoot.::Santanya: Where can we get them?::William R. Tymen: You buy them from me.::Santanya: Good! We trade for buffalo hides.::William R. Tymen: No, not for hides.::Crazy Horse: What is it you want? Our land? Our women? What do we have left that the white man has not already taken from us?::William R. Tymen: Gold. My price is one hundred dollars in gold or money for each gun and I'll throw in a case of shells for every one you want.::Santanya: But we have no gold or money.::William R. Tymen: You can get it.
General Alfred Terry: For the record, I don't like you. You're too sure of yourself, too much your own man.::Custer: Then why did you bring me back?::General Alfred Terry: Because, by the Almighty, you're a soldier. There's another kind of war brewing out here on the frontier. We're going to need every trained man we can get.
General Alfred Terry: I want you to take a close look at your new command - the scum of the Earth. No enlisted man in uniform can be arrested or tried for any civil offense. That makes the Army a hideout for thieves, renegades, murderers... throw in a few foreign immigrants, professional soldiers and ex-Confederates and that's what's become of your glorious Seventh.
General Alfred Terry: Blast it, the girl's no better at taking orders than you are!
[rather than return to Fort Hays as he was ordered, Custer has just led his troopers to General Terry's rescue]::General Alfred Terry: And more important, I gave you a direct order to return to this post, Mr. Custer!::Custer: I received the General's order, sir, and was carrying it out.::General Alfred Terry: By riding in the opposite direction of the fort?::Custer: The general's order did not specify the route I was to take in getting here, sir.
