Two years in jail and € 7,500 for recording racist police round-up
On March 17th 2012, Javier, a member of the 15-M movement and the CNT Union, was arrested while filming a racist round-up in Lavapiés, Madrid.
In the coming weeks we will know the exact date of the trial, scheduled for the spring, in which the state prosecutor and the private attorney of one of the officers who assaulted him during his detention charge our comrade with resisting arrest and assault & battery, crimes punishable with two years in prison and civil penalty of more than €7,500.
The events for which he will go to trial occurred almost four years ago, when a spontaneous demonstration of neighbors tried to publicly denounce the umpteenth racist police raid in the streets of Lavapiés. Peaceful demonstrations like this had already occurred several times in that neighborhood and other quarters with high migrant populations such as Carabanchel, showing that residents had grown weary of the constant police harassment of migrant workers, who suffer identity checks on a daily basis merely for having a dark skin color. Although successive Spanish governments have been reproached for these raids by organizations which are far from revolutionary, such as the EU, the UN, and Amnesty International, they are still occurring every day in the public spaces of our city, with the active collaboration of the Madrid municipal police and private security agents on the subway, commuter trains, etc. They intend to fill the quota for people without residence permits which the Spanish Interior Ministry requires of police department to satisfy their goal of human bodies in their cells, their Immigrant Detention Centers and on their deportation flights, and at the same time, to incite to hatred and divide the native and foreign sections of the working class.
March 17, 2012 was a turning point in escalating repression against neighborhood anti-racist self-organization. An unprecedented police deployment and the subsequent police set-up of our comrade Javier tried to put an end to these spontaneous and peaceful demonstrations of solidarity which were marked by chants of “No human being is illegal!”. The authorities want to put an end to the emerging solidarity movement against the scourge of ethnic identity checks and subsequent arrests (kidnapping) of neighbors whose only “crime” was to be migrants, poor and to have lost or failed to complete the administrative process to establish their legal residence in our neighborhoods.
The Assembly of Lavapies is taking the opportunity of this new political trial to appeal for solidarity with our comrade and to renew the fight against racist police controls and raids. Watch out for updated information on the trial and support grassroots organizing, without leaders. Don’t let the police continue to undermine coexistence in our neighborhoods with their racist practices.

Private dick Mike Hammer gets more than he bargained for when one night he picks up a dazed woman on the highway who is running barefoot and is wearing nothing more than a trench coat. This chance encounter leads our confused detective down the darkest alleys he’s ever ventured, and the old Greek legend of Pandora is given an ultra-modern twist. This surreal flick is legendary for its wild mix of genres, including its cold war theme and its dynamite apocalyptic climax.
Based on the novel by Mickey Spillane and directed with a punch by Robert Aldrich (What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?) this is a classic film noir, and one that had a
big influence on many modern movies, such as Pulp Fiction and Alex Cox’s cult film Repo Man. Personally I see detective Mike Hammer’s sleazy, hard-nose mentality as a beautiful illustration of America’s essential nihilism. It was critically neglected when it was first released in the States, but this existential ’50s cold war paranoia thriller was instantly hailed by European critics as a masterpiece.

Benefit for LLECA, a Dutch-Nicaraguan theatre collective
Monday march 7th 2016, Benefit for LLECA, a Dutch-Nicaraguan theatre collective, Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm.
LLECA is a Nicaraguan cultural-artistic organization created by and for youth from the ‘lleca’ (slang for ‘street’). Violence is in its pluriformity the base and daily reality of our society which manifests itself through our bodies. As such art should be violent: violent in breaking and annihilating, in questioning and proposing, in deconstructing and producing; only then can it be the basis of freedom. Our principle objective is to establish spaces of communication, creation, reflection, and freedom. We work in non-conventional spaces with non-conventional ‘actors’ through our concept of posthuman theater. Since 2009 we are the force behind the only continuous artistic educational process of theater in prison, where we have founded our inmate theater groups who we train every year. Black Cat Cine presents Land and Freedom (Tierra y Libertad)
Sunday March 6th 2016, Black Cat Cine presents Land and Freedom (Tierra y Libertad) by Ken Loach, UK 1995, 109 minutes, English subtitles. Door opens at 8pm, film begin at 9pm. Free admission.
A fascinating depiction of the Spanish Civil War and the internal struggle between different factions (Stalinist, Marxist, anarchist). David Carr from Liverpool, the protagonist, wants to join the International Brigades but coincidentally ends up enlisted in an anti-soviet POUM militia on the Aragon front.
Master of social engagement movie director Ken Loach creates a strong and deeply moving portrait of young people involved in the horrors of civil war and shows how a clash of convictions can destroy a movement from within.
Interesting to know: according to Ken Loach, the most important scene of the film is the debate in an assembly of a village successfully liberated by the militia. People from the actual village where the film was shot play peasant parts and express their thoughts freely (despite language difficulties), and a debate ensues about whether or not to collectivize the village land and that of a recently shot priest.

Benefit for Dunkirk refugee camp
Monday February 29th 2016, Benefit for Dunkirk refugee camp, Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm.
The Dunkirk refugee camp (Dunkirk, France) has been a temporary home to around 3000 refugees since October 2015. The camp is predominantly Kurdish (mainly from Iraq, but also Syria and Iran). Most refugees are trying to cross over to Britain. Dunkirk is facing a sanitary and humanitarian crisis. There is loads of mud and a severe lack of facilities, electricity, running water and building material (not being allowed into the camp by the police). Dunkirk needs volunteers, especially Kurdish, Arabic and Farsi speaking ones. This benefit is meant to help volunteers meet, discuss and make plans but also gather goods and supplies for the camp.
Iranian New Wave Cinema: The Silence (1998)

The Silence (Persian: سکوت) is an Iranian film from 1998. It is directed by the well known Iranian film maker Mohsen Makhmalbaf. The movie is about a little boy who has the onerous task of earning money for his family, but is always enchanted and distracted by music. It is set in Tajikistan.
Synopsis: Khorshid lives with his mom in a house near a river somewhere in Tajikistan. The landlord comes around every morning to ask for the rent. Khorshid has to provide the money or else they’ll have to leave. His blindness has given him an amazing skill in tuning musical instruments which gets him a job at an instrument making workshop. But the problem is That Khorshid is mesmerized by sonorous music all the time; whenever he hears a great musician play, he loses track of time and place. For this, he always gets lost and gets to work late. How is he going to make a balance between his love of music and his task as a breadwinner. […Lees verder]

This afternoon, Joe’s Garage hosts a guest lecture for the students of the course Urban Struggle. The focus will be on squatting in Amsterdam, and topics such as the effects of the 2010 ban, the right to the city and the risks of cooptation by the government will be addressed. Urban Struggle is part of the bachelor’s degree in Sociology of the University of Amsterdam and the aim of the class is to teach students about “the importance of (urban) social movements for articulating a collectivity’s interest and claims.”

De focus zal liggen op kraken in Amsterdam, en onderwerpen zoals het verbod van 2010, het recht op de stad en de risico’s van cooptatie door de overheid zullen aan bod komen. Stadsstrijd is onderdeel van de bachelor in de sociologie van de Univcersiyteit van Amsterdam en het doel van de cursus is om studenten te leren over “het belang van (stedelijke) sociale bewegingen voor het articuleren van het belang en de aanspraken van collectiviteiten”.

All Included Amsterdam for freedom of movement, the right of residence for migrants and fair development, is taking part in the action in Rabat/Morocco commemorating the 2nd anniversary of the massacre of Ceuta of the 6th of February 2014 when the Guardia Civil shot at least 15 sub-saharan migrants on Tarajal beach trying to reach the EU. “We are activists from collectives, associations, initiatives and various social movements. We fight for freedom of movement for all! We are from Cameroon, Syria, Mali, Eritrea, Senegal, Spain, Germany, Tunisia, Morocco, France and many more countries. We don´t accept any more deaths in the Mediterranean. We know it is possible to ‘live together’ and to consider a political system of equality and respect for human rights, because we have been building solidarity networks for years. The happenings on the 6th of February 2014, when the Spanish Guardia Civil killed at least 15 persons, who entered swimming to Ceuta, are not only spanish or morrocan issues, they are global issues. Black Cat Cine presents Venuto al Mondo
Sunday February 14th 2016, Special Valentine’s Day movie. Black Cat Cine presents Venuto al Mondo from Sergio Castellitto, (Italy/Spain, 2012, 127 min, English subtitles). Door opens at 20:00, movie starts at 21:00. Free admission.
‘Venuto al Mondo’ is a romantic drama directed by Sergio Castellitto, based on a novel by Margaret Mazzantini, set partly during the Balkan wars of the early 1990s.
Middle-aged Gemma (Penelope Cruz) returns with her 16-year-old son Pietro (Pietro Castellitto) to Sarajevo at the invitation of her old friend Gojko (Adnan Haskovic), once the heart of a vibrant group of artists, poets and philosophers. While sullen Pietro resists the impulse to delve into his origins, insisting he was born in Sarajevo “by mistake,” Gemma’s return to the scene of her greatest love stokes potent memories and conflicted emotions.
Not many movies get such extreme ratings: it was panned by the critics but loved by the audience (7.4 on IMDB). I liked it very much, especially the beautiful photography (excellent historical reconstruction of a debased Sarajevo under siege) and the great acting of Penelope Cruz. Also a good soundtrack with Nirvana and Bruce Springsteen. Come and see/hear for yourself!

Benefit for Centro Social Libertario in Cuba
Monday February 8th 2016, Benefit for the new anarchist/libertarian Social Center opening in Cuba. Volkseten Vegazulu, 7pm. Music (Tim Loud & X Ray Cat from Leeds, UK) from 8:30 till 10pm!
The borders are opening after many years, and changes in Cuba predict new possibilities and dangers for the Cuban society. It is essential, therefore, reinforce the work of those that from Cuba defend a critical, anti-capitalist and antiautoritarial system-world , the same machine expressed every day more clearly in the national life.
After more than a decade of social and political activism in the Critical Cuban Observatory and five years as part of the Alfredo Lopez Libertarian Workshop (Tlal) , we have identified as the main difficulty for our performance and expanding for our social impact, the lack of a permanent base, which allows to build community and shape our identity stronger and lasting way.
Who we are?
The TLAL is a specifically anarchist collective, which has hold a systematic activity in recent years, radicalizing their proposals and keeping a strong anchorage in Cuban society and their communities. We have succeeded in a short time to ser the annual Libertarian Spring Meeting in Havana, where we seek to merge thought and anarchist or libertarian action on the island. In addition, we issued a modest printed newspaper, Tierra Nueva!, with some troubles we tried to bring our critical vision to ordinary people, that which is majority and do not have access to Internet in Cuba, as well as promoting libertarian, anarcho-syndicalist, and naturist ideals, present in the country’s history before the insurrectional victory in 1959, and whose impact beats hidden in the interstices of the now a day Cuba.
Moreover, we have embarked in major organizational efforts, along with other comrades in the region. Has been the foundation of the Central American and Caribbean Anarchist Federation network in March 2015 containing a large expansion and development potential. […Lees verder]
