(with Roan Kattouw) Wikipedia is meant to be "the free encyclopædia that anyone[citation needed] can edit". We know from research, however, that most people can't edit, and so we, a team from the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikia, are building a visual editor to bridge the gap. This is particularly challenging because MediaWiki's syntax, "wikitext", is a significant superset of HTML, and Wikipedia's content is so complex, using every possible form of it. In the two years that we have been working on this project, we have encountered some unique challenges posed by creating an editor for wikitext and deploying it to an enormous corpus of existing articles, which have led us to push the limits of Web browsers, JavaScript, parsers and our own creativity. VisualEditor is now the default way people edit Wikipedia. We have provided a simple way to create and edit articles, from tiny stubs to mature and complex articles, in any of the 300 languages we support, while still allowing experienced editors to use the old wikitext editor if they want to. With an eye to the future, we have also been carefully preparing the way for the later addition of real-time collaborative editing. One of the key objectives of the VisualEditor project has been to de-couple the Javascript editor from MediaWiki; to do this, we have built a separate parser service to switch between wikitext and HTML. We want VisualEditor to be the best possible FLOSS HTML editor out there -- so great that other Web applications want to use it too. To achieve this, there are extensive possibilities for plugins to edit new forms of content, and how it can integrate with other platforms. We will talk about and show off the work we've done, the decisions we made, and the issues we worry about. Once you complete watching this video you will understand zones, what zones files are available, and how you can use the different zones. Download Handout http://itfreetraining.com/handouts/dns/dnszones.pdf What is a DNS zone? A zone file contains the data for a portion of the DNS Name space. For this reason, zones allow different administrators to have control over that part of the DNS name space. Depending on what type of zone file that you create, this will determine what types of DNS records can be stored in that zone and if the data in that zone can be modified. In this video This video will look at the following zone types: Primary zone, Secondary zone, Active Directory integrated zone, Stub zone and reverse look up zone. Depending on what the needs of the administrator are, this will determine which zone file is used. Different zone files are used in different scenarios and the administrator needs to decide the correct zone file to use for that scenario. Primary zone For any domain name, there needs to be at least one primary zone. If the primary zone is stored in a text file, rather than a database like Active Directory, then this means that the server holding the primary zone text file is the only location where changes can be made to the zone data. If another zone file is asked to make changes to the zone, these changes will be forwarded to a DNS server that is holding a primary zone. This does mean that if the DNS server holding the primary server is not available, changes cannot be made. Active Directory Integrated Zone An Active Directory Integrated Zone is essentially a primary zone that has been moved from a text file stored on the computer into the Active Directory database. The advantage of this is that any Domain Controller that has the DNS role installed on it can access the Active Directory Integrated zone. Changes can also be made on any Domain Controller running DNS unlike text based primary zones which are limited to one server. Having the data stored in Active Directory means that the zone will use the same replication system that is used to replicate objects in Active Directory which is quite efficient. Active Directory Integrated Zones also allow the clients to use secure updates. Secure updates use the secure channel created when a computer is added to the domain and thus the computer must be a domain member. If you use a primary zone stored in a text file, and if you enable dynamic updates, you are also allowing none secure updates as well. Secondary Zones A secondary zone file is a copy of another zone that is read only. The copy can be any other zone stored on any other DNS server. For example, the zone file could be stored on Windows or a UNIX based system and copied from a primary or secondary zone. If you copy the data from a secondary zone, this would essentially be a copy of a copy so you may have delays waiting for the zone data to be copied from one server to the next server. Since the zone file is read only, changes cannot be made so these changes are passed onto a server holding a primary zone. Stub Zone A Stub Zone contains only the NS (Name Server) records from a zone. This NS records contain DNS servers that are considered to be authoritative for that zone. In other words, the DNS Servers are considered to be able to give the best answers for that zone. Since stub zones update the NS records, if there are changes to the NS records, these changes will updated automatically. If you use forwarding or conditional forwarding, and if changes are made, the DNS server would not be aware of these changes. As of October 2005 it had been edited 21,507 times, vastly more than its closest competitor, the article about Hurricane Katrina, which had been edited 7,968 times. There are some internal project pages which have received more edits, such as the original Articles for deletion page which was edited 40,240 times. As the former president of the United States,George W. Bush was arguably the most prominent person in the world, and also one of the most controversial. The page receives a great deal of vandalism, and a significant portion of those edits are either simply vandalism or reversions of it. The controversial subject matter has also led to "edit wars" over its content, also inflating edit counts. The article is also the most discussed on Wikipedia. The discussion page,Talk:George W. Bush has been edited 7,422 times, more than any other talk page. George W. Bush had been the incumbent American president for nearly the entirety of Wikipedia's existence, having been inaugurated five days after its founding date. The article was created very soon after Wikipedia started in January 2001, but the original version has been lost. The earliest saved version comes from January 29, 2001, when the article was at GeorgeWBush (see Wikipedia:CamelCase and Wikipedia) It is a rather brief "stub" article, edited from the one on whitehouse.gov. The current article is one of Wikipedia's longest, at over 12,000 words. The article also has several subpages, including Domestic policy of the George W. Bush administration. Perhaps the most intense period of vandalism and edit warring was in the lead up to the 2004 presidential elections. The battle became so intense that the New York Times covered it. Byron Crawford writes: "Internets, The term Black Girl Magic is ridiculous on its face. It sounds like the name of a Stones record that had to be left off of Exile for fear of offending the NAACP. "Come give me some of that black girl magic..." It's been in the news—and trending on Twitter—because it's the name of a feature in a new issue of Essence. The magazine selected a group of girls, hardly any of whom I'm familiar with, that they feel represent Black Girl Magic, not unlike XXL's annual Freshman 10 issue. Maybe this will become an annual thing for them, sponsored by toxic hair-care products and the military, complete with its own heavily branded subsite, videos and live events. But who will they select next year? This year's selections are already straining the notability requirements for a stub in Wikipedia, let alone a magazine cover. Johnetta "Netta" Elzie (an alias, according to Breitbart—why, I'm not sure) appears on one of the covers of this year's issue. This seems ridiculous to me, not because she doesn't have any business being on the cover of a magazine, because of her looks (it's not that kind of magazine), but because it seems unbecoming of a civil rights leader. Nothing about the Netta cover of Essence suggests to me black men lying dead in the street. To look at it, you'd hardly know who she was and why she's on the cover. Instead, it looks like fap material for guys in Africa and BBW aficionados. Cole James Cash will almost certainly be copping this month's issue, if he's not already a subscriber. And so the first Black Girl Magic-related controversy had to do with people making fun of Netta for being fat. Or rather, fear that someone might make fun of Netta for being fat. I clicked on her name when it was trending, the other day, and all I saw was, on the hand, those glamour shots of her looking like Hey Kool-Aid, and on the other hand, people complaining about how terrible it was that people were making fun of her. I didn't actually see anyone making fun of her. It could be that Deray, who has direct, red-telephone access to Twitter HQ in San Francisco (where, ironically, people beat black people up for so much as lingering in the street in front of the building), was having people banned from Twitter the moment they so much as fixed their fingers to make a fat joke, and that's why they weren't showing up in the feed. Anyway, I found myself reminded of that time when I accidentally checked Twitter during that Tidal b-sides concert and found several members of the Male Beyhive having imaginary arguments about whether or not Jay Z is the greatest rapper of all time. That's becoming an increasingly common thing on Twitter: clicking on a trending topic and finding nothing but sad, delusional fans mounting a preemptive defense of something no one else cares enough about to insult in the first place. Which brings us back to Black Girl Magic. The hashtag was back in the news again the other day, not because this is an especially good week for black women (RIP David Bowie), but because a black woman writing for a white magazine had the sheer balls to call BS on Black Girl Magic. No Caitlyn Jenner. In white-interest fashion magazine Elle, an obscure black academic argued against use of the hashtag on the basis that it might lead people to think that black women, like David Blaine, really are capable of magic, and hence, for example, it might cause doctors to not give black women as much anesthesia as they would give a white woman. No, really. That's what she said. (Separately, a white female tech blogger argued that if you click on the Black Girl Magic hashtag, it turns up a lot of gross cleavage shots that guys might use "for their own personal amusement," thus potentially providing a man with satisfaction, and also that it could easily be hijacked by 4chan.) Black People Twitter promptly lit up with people taking the girl from Elle magazine to task, pontificating about what Black Girl Magic actually means, engaging in virtue signaling for the purpose of boosting their own personal brands, posting pictures of random black chicks with Buhweet hairdos, so on and so forth. Many a think piece soon appeared, with writers congratulating themselves for understanding that Black Girl Magic isn't actual magic in the Harry Potter sense of the term (RIP Alan Rickman) and criticizing the girl who wrote the anti-Black Girl Magic article for doing so in a white magazine, while themselves writing for white-owned publications like Essence and The Root. Ironically, the response to the Elle article is emblematic of the real problem with Black Girl Magic, which is that it serves to highlight achievement that isn't actually achievement.
