Working with some of the best students from Art Center and Caltech made for a pretty successful event. Projects included a sign-language translator, a direction signaler for cyclists, tags which allow you to locate missing objects and an earpiece which enhances your hearing.

This video was created at Caltech to inspire young students (K-12) to think about engineering as a creative, fun, and meaningful career choice that can have enormous positive impact on society. The video was entered into the National Academy of Engineering's "Engineering for You" video contest. At Caltech Engineering, we work at the leading edges of fundamental science to invent the technologies of the future. Here we feature several medical engineering projects currently underway at Caltech: heart pumps and flow, retinal implants, and spinal stimulation to aid paraplegic patients. The video stars our students and postdocs, including a performance by members of one of Caltech's a cappella groups, Out of Context. We aim to capture the vitality, impact, and sheer joy of brilliant engineering.

Crystal Dilworth has a B.S. in biochemistry from UC San Diego, and is currently working on her Ph.D. in molecular neuroscience in the lab of Henry A. Lester at Caltech. Crystal is a violinist, former nationally ranked Rhythmic Gymnast, former professional modern dancer and choreographer, an active member of the Caltech theater community, and a member of the team behind PHDComics.com/tv. As a scientist and communicator, Crystal hopes to chip away the mystique of the academic "ivory tower" and reveal researchers and their work as human, relevant, and "cool."

So I'm on the campus of California Institute of Technology, otherwise known as Caltech, here in Pasadena, California, and I'm outside Fleming House, which is one of the nine houses in which undergraduate students live. These are like Hogwarts; you've got Slytherin and Gryffindor and Hufflepuff kinds of houses where the undergraduate students live.
I want to point out, behind me there's a group of Chinese children who are touring Caltech, and we also ran into another group of students from China, from Chengdu, who are touring Caltech. The interesting thing about Caltech admissions for international students is that the statistics are really pretty mind-boggling in terms of the difficulty of getting into this school. There are only about 230, 240 undergraduates accepted to this school every year. So the undergraduate population is slightly less than 1,000 students. 1,000 students! 6% of them are from overseas, are not American citizens.
Now, one of the statistics that's interesting is 26% of students are born somewhere besides the United States, but that means 94% of the students who go here are American citizens. So we saw these groups of Chinese students and children who are ambitious, and probably maybe excellent in sciences, and really want to come to Caltech, and have paid a lot of money to come visit Caltech. But only 15 students out of the entire world will be accepted to Caltech next year. So it's interesting to me that people will make this enormous investment to travel all the way to the United States to come visit this particular institution, when their chances of admission are miniscule.
Of course there are some people, always, every year, 15 or so, that are admitted from all over the planet, and so we always want to hold out hope that we are the one, but it really is interesting to me, the daunting numbers in admissions are -- it's just overwhelmingly competitive for an international student. However, this is one of the most prestigious and most active research institutes in the United States, a ton of sciences happening here, the federal government has invested billions of dollars into this school in terms of the scientific research that goes on here. I think I read 23 Nobel laureates are now at Caltech. It's obviously an incredible scientific institute. However, it's super difficult to get into.

What is Richter Scale? - as part of the news and politics series by GeoBeats.
We all know that the richter scale value tells us the magnitude of an earthquake. Have you wondered how that came about?
The scale was created in 1935 Charles Richter of the California Institute of Technology.
When an earthquake hits, seismic waves travel through Earth. Seismographs record the amplitude of those waves in a zig-zag trace. The Richter scale magnitude is derived from the logarithm of the amplitude of waves on a seismograph.
Richter scale was invented with the intention to use it in a local California study but was later expanded for usage in its current form.
Because the scale is logarithm based, an increase in 1 whole number on the scale represents a 10 times increase in amplitude - which means an 8.0 earthquake would have 100 times more amplitude than a 6.0 earthquake. Also an increase in one number on the Richter scale translates to 31 times more increase in energy.
According to the USGS estimates, 2-3 million earthquakes happen around the world every year. Most are too weak to be felt by humans.
The world's strongest earthquake on record was a 9.5 in Chile on Mary 22nd, 1960.

Upon the campus of the lies one of the great treasure troves of the southwest. Gold, silver, and precious gems, the objects of the Conquistador's travels and travails, glitter on glass shelves next to other spectacular mineral forms. This El Dorado was given the honorary title "Coronado's Treasure Chest" by the New Mexico Cuarto-Centennial Commission in 1939.
The mineral museum can trace its origins back to the very beginnings of the New Mexico School of Mines in 1889. The collection was assembled to help in the education of engineers and geologists. It was soon built into one of the finest in the world, winning gold medals at the St. Louis World's Fair 1904 and the Panama-California exhibition of 1915. Three thousand mineral specimens in 1938 have grown to over 15,000. Coronado's Treasure Chest is still renowned as can be seen at invited exhibitions at the Denver and Tucson Gem and Mineral Shows and featured articles in mineralogical magazines from around the world.

Today's world seems to be fuller with cool new software, hardware, gadgets and gizmos. Checking it all out is great fun, but are we in danger of missing something important? The truth is that the unique element which guides the human race to a truly amazing future is nothing to do with machines. It's something called Soft Tech. Find out from Nicholas Yang, one of Hong Kong's leading futuristic thinkers today!
About the Speaker:
Nicholas Yang received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics from California Institute of Technology in 1977, followed by a MSc degree in Electrical Engineering and MBA degree from Stanford University in 1978 and 1982 respectively. He started his career as a senior design engineer in 1978 at Intel Corporation, and subsequently, as a strategic management consultant for Bain & Company. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Birmingham is a city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands, England. It is the most populous British city outside London with 1,092,330 residents (2013 est.),[1] and its population increase of 88,400 residents between the 2001 and 2011 censuses was greater than that of any other British local authority.[4] The city lies within the West Midlands Built-up Area, the third most populous built-up area in the United Kingdom with 2,440,986 residents (2011 census),[5] and its metropolitan area is the United Kingdom's second most populous with 3,701,107 residents (2012 est.).[6]
A medium-sized market town during the medieval period, Birmingham grew to international prominence in the 18th century at the heart of the Midlands Enlightenment and subsequent Industrial Revolution, which saw the town at the forefront of worldwide advances in science, technology and economic development, producing a series of innovations that laid many of the foundations of modern industrial society.[7] By 1791 it was being hailed as "the first manufacturing town in the world".[8] Birmingham's distinctive economic profile, with thousands of small workshops practising a wide variety of specialised and highly skilled trades, encouraged exceptional levels of creativity and innovation and provided a diverse and resilient economic base for industrial prosperity that was to last into the final quarter of the 20th century.[9] Its resulting high level of social mobility also fostered a culture of broad-based political radicalism, that under leaders from Thomas Attwood to Joseph Chamberlain was to give it a political influence unparalleled in Britain outside London, and a pivotal role in the development of British democracy.[10]
Today Birmingham's economy is dominated by the service sector.[11] The city is a major international commercial centre, ranked as a beta− world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network;[12] and an important transport, retail, events and conference hub. Its metropolitan economy is the second largest in the United Kingdom with a GDP of $121.1bn (2014),[3] and its six universities make it the largest centre of higher education in the country outside London.[13] Birmingham's major cultural institutions – including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, the Library of Birmingham and the Barber Institute of Fine Arts – enjoy international reputations,[14] and the city has vibrant and influential grassroots art, music, literary and culinary scenes

This video shows a continually looping view of the Spitzer Space Telescope's new infrared view of our Milky Way Galaxy. The 360-degree mosaic comes primarily from the GLIMPSE360 project, which stands for Galactic Legacy Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire. It consists of more than 2 million snapshots taken in infrared light over ten years, beginning in 2003 when Spitzer launched.
The radar view to the bottom right of the screen shows the direction currently being displayed in the main image, centered on our position in the suburbs of the Milky Way.
This infrared image reveals much more of the galaxy than can be seen in visible-light views. Whereas visible light is blocked by dust, infrared light from stars and other objects can travel through dust to reach Spitzer's detectors. For instance, when looking up at our night skies, we see stars that are an average of 1,000 light-years away; the rest are hidden. In Spitzer's mosaic, light from stars throughout the galaxy -- which stretches 100,000 light-years across -- shines through. This picture covers only about three percent of the sky, but includes more than half of the galaxy's stars and the majority of its star formation activity.
The red color shows dusty areas of star formation. Throughout the galaxy, tendrils, bubbles and sculpted dust structures are apparent. These are the result of massive stars blasting out winds and radiation. Stellar clusters deeply embedded in gas and dust, green jets and other features related to the formation of young stars can also be seen for the first time. Looking towards the galactic center, the blue haze is made up of starlight -- the region is too far away for us to pick out individual stars, but they contribute to the glow. Dark filaments that show up in stark contrast to the bright background are areas of thick, cold dust that not even infrared light can penetrate.
The GLIMPSE360 map will guide astronomers for generations, helping them to further chart the unexplored territories of our own Milky Way.
