In this video we fulfil our quest to find and devour
Korean Walnut Cakes (Hodu Gwaja 호두과자) in
Cheonan 천안,
Korea. Cheonan is where these delicious walnut cakes (filled with red bean paste and walnuts) originate from in
South Korea.
It's a tasty sweet snack that is often enjoyed on train and bus journeys; whenever, I'm on a bus/train in Korea I always grab a bag of these. In many ways they remind me of timbits from back home in
Canada. For those unfamiliar, timbits are donut holes; in
Canada they're one of the most popular sugary snacks - especially in the winter.

Our trip to Cheonan was entirely spontaneous. Typically we head into
Seoul on the weekends; however, we decided instead to head in the opposite direction.
As we looked at the various options for metro stops, we quickly decided on Cheonan.
Just outside of the station one can find a plethora of shops specializing in the art of making Korean Walnut Cakes.
The hardest part for us was deciding which shop to pick, as all of them appeared to be quite busy.
Finally, we settled on a shop and I went inside to place an order.
Speaking in Korea I ordered a small set for us to sample. These Korean walnut cakes come in all kinds of different packages: small bags, big bags, gift boxes, etc.
Considering it was just for the two of us, we decided to go with a small sized bag to share.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the shops in Cheonan is that you can see how the walnut cakes are made from the machines.
In bus and train terminals, the walnut cakes are on display for sale; however, one does not have the opportunity to see how they're made considering they're usually just delivered to the store via truck.
Hodugwaja, are a mixture of pounded walnuts combined with red bean paste covered in dough prior to being baked.
I absolutely love them.
Audrey just found them 'okay.'
If you're interested in trying the authentic thing come visit Cheonan in
South Chungcheong Province.
What do you think? Do you like
Korean food? Would you try Korean walnut cakes?
