The Libertarian Party is the third largest and fastest growing political party in the United States. The political platform of the Libertarian Party reflects the ideas of Libertarianism, favoring minimally regulated, laissez-faire markets, strong civil liberties, drug liberalization, LGBT rights (such as in marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws), separation of church and state, minimally regulated migration across borders, and non-interventionism and diplomacy in foreign policy, i.e., avoiding foreign military or economic entanglements with other nations and respect for freedom of trade and travel to all foreign countries.
In the 30 states where voters can register by party, there are over 282,000 voters registered with the party. Hundreds of Libertarian candidates have been elected or appointed to public office, and thousands have run for office under the Libertarian banner. The Libertarian Party has many firsts in its credit such as the first party to get an electoral vote for a woman.
On May 5, 2012, Gary Johnson received the Libertarian Party's official nomination for President of the United States in the 2012 election.
The Libertarian Party's platform opposes government intervention in the economy. According to the party platform "The only proper role of government in the economic realm is to protect property rights, adjudicate disputes, and provide a legal framework in which voluntary trade is protected." - Libertarian Party Platform, Section 2.0 (adopted: May 2008)
The Libertarian Party believes government regulations in the form of minimum wage laws drive up the cost of employing additional workers. This is why Libertarians favor repealing minimum wage laws so that overall unemployment rate can be reduced and low-wage workers, unskilled workers, visa immigrants, and those with limited education or job experience can find employment.
The Libertarian Party supports the legalization of drugs, pornography, prostitution, gambling, removal of restrictions on homosexuality, opposes any kind of censorship and supports freedom of speech, and supports the right to keep and bear arms. The Libertarian Party's platform states: "Government does not have the authority to define, license or restrict personal relationships. Consenting adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices and personal relationships."
Though the Libertarian Party has no official stance on abortion, libertarians themselves are divided on the issue, with some considering abortion an act of aggression against a fetus, while others consider denying a woman the right to choose abortion to be an act of aggression against her.
The Libertarian Party views attempts by government to control obscenity or pornography as "an abridgment of liberty of expression" and opposes any government intervention to regulate it. According to former Libertarian National Committee Chairman Mark Hinkle, "Federal anti-obscenity laws are unconstitutional in two ways. First, because the Constitution does not grant Congress any power to regulate or criminalize obscenity. And second, because the First Amendment guarantees the right of free speech."
The Libertarian Party supports the legalization of prostitution. Many men and women with background in prostitution and activists for sex workers' rights, such as Norma Jean Almodovar and Starchild, have run for office on the Libertarian Party ticket or are active members of the party. Norma Jean Almodovar, a former officer with the Los Angeles Police Department and former call girl who authored the book From Cop To Call Girl about her experiences, ran on the Libertarian Party ticket for California lieutenant governor in 1986 and was actively supported by the party. Mark Hinkle described her as being the most able "of any Libertarian" "to generate publicity". The Massachusetts Libertarian Party was one of the few organizations to support a 1980s campaign to repeal prostitution laws.

An average libertarian learns what an average Tea Partier believes. Obviously, this doesn't reflect everyone's views. But it is based on my own experience as a libertarian, having attended a Tea Party last year. By then, the Tea Party has shifted away from Ron Paul, and resembled ideology closer to Sarah Palin's or Pat Robertson's. Many libertarians have since distanced themselves from the Tea Party because of this, while others still have hope for it.
One major motivation for me making this video, is because I'm tired of people painting libertarians and people like Glenn Beck with the same brush. Glenn Beck is NOT a libertarian. And the Tea Party is closer to neocon than it is libertarian. It's no wonder so many people are misinformed about libertarians.

*Update* People are telling me that not all Tea Parties are like this. I hope that's true. But the one I went to... there were posters of dead babies, a banner saying "we kicked god out, look at us now", signs calling Obama a Muslim and Kenyan, a speaker saying that chili day in September was proof that Global Warming is a lie, a speaker saying "if you don't support the war, you don't support the troops", rhetoric against gays, atheists, and Muslims, ... and literally every speaker invoked their religion, like "Barrack HUSSEIN Obama is not our leader, god is!" Basically, the Tea Party was advertised as libertarian, but it was indiscernible from the Christian-Right. If that Westboro Baptist Church group switched out their anti-troop signs, they would have fit right in.
*Update 2* Yeah, I know libertarians are on both sides of abortion. I myself can argue both sides. My point with that was to point out the illogical reasons I hear from the Tea Party conservative types. Where a libertarian would bring up concepts like eviction, personhood, or property rights, the Tea Partier types generally can't get past the "Because Jesus that's why!" phase.

John McAfee (born September 18, 1945) is a computer programmer and founder of McAfee. He was one of the first people to design anti-virus software and to develop a virus scanner. He was born in England and raised in Salem, Virginia. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Roanoke College in 1967, and he received an honorary doctorate from Roanoke College in 2008.
John was employed as a programmer by NASA's Institute for Space Studies in New York City from 1968 to 1970. From there he went to Univac as a software designer and later to Xerox as an Operating System architect. In 1978 he joined Computer Sciences Corporation as a software consultant. Later, while employed by Lockheed in the 1980s, McAfee received a copy of the Pakistani Brain computer virus and began developing software to combat viruses. He was the first to distribute anti-virus software using the shareware business model. In 1989, he quit Lockheed and began working full time at his anti-virus company McAfee Associates, which he initially operated from his home in Santa Clara, California.

Ronald Ernest "Ron" Paul (born August 20, 1935) is an American politician who has been the U.S. Representative for Texas's 14th congressional district, which includes Galveston, since 1997, and a three-time candidate for President of the United States, as a Libertarian in 1988 and as a Republican in 2008 and currently 2012. He is an outspoken critic of American foreign and monetary policies, including the Military–industrial complex and the Federal Reserve, and is known for his libertarian-leaning views, often differing from his own party on certain issues.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Paul is a graduate of Gettysburg College and Duke University School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree. He served as a medical officer in the United States Air Force from 1963 until 1968. He worked as an obstetrician-gynecologist from the 1960s to the 1980s, delivering more than 4,000 babies. He became the first Representative in history to serve concurrently with a child in the Senate when his son Rand Paul was elected to the United States Senate for Kentucky in 2010.

Libertarian Vs. Tea Party
An average libertarian learns what an average Tea Partier believes. Obviously, this doesn't reflect everyone's views. But it is based on my own experience as a libertarian, having attended a Tea Party last year. By then, the Tea Party has shifted away from Ron Paul, and resembled ideology closer to Sarah Palin's or Pat Robertson's. Many libertarians have since distanced themselves from the Tea Party because of this, while others still have hope for it. One major motivation for me making this video, is because I'm tired of people painting libertarians and people like Glenn Beck with the same brush. Glenn Beck is NOT a libertarian. And the Tea Party is closer to neocon than it is libertarian. It's no wonder so many people are misinformed about libertarians. Thanks for watching. I know you have your own ideas, so feel free to use the comment section. *Update* People are telling me that not all Tea Parties are like this. I hope that's true. But the one I went to... there were posters of dead babies, a banner saying "we kicked god out, look at us now", signs calling Obama a Muslim and Kenyan, a speaker saying that chili day in September was proof that Global Warming is a lie, a speaker saying "if you don't support the war, you don't support the troops", rhetoric against gays, atheists, and Muslims, ... and literally every speaker invoked their religion, like "Barrack HUSSEIN Obama is not our leader, god is!" Basically, the Tea Party was advertised as libertarian, but it was indiscernible from the Christian-Right. If that Westboro Baptist Church group switched out their anti-troop signs, they would have fit right in. *Update 2* Yeah, I know libertarians are on both sides of abortion. I myself can argue both sides. My point with that was to point out the illogical reasons I hear from the Tea Party conservative types. Where a libertarian would bring up concepts like eviction, personhood, or property rights, the Tea Partier types generally can't get past the "Because Jesus that's why!" phase. -

Mr. Benedict's speech may be viewed online here: A transcript of Mr. Benedict's speech follows: "Good evening and thank you for your interest in the State of our Union. "My name is Wes Benedict. I'm the executive director of the Libertarian National Committee here in Washington, DC. The Libertarian Party stands for free markets, civil liberties, and peace. "Tonight we heard from President Barack Obama and a response from Republican Congressman Paul Ryan. "President Obama says he wants a freeze in non-security, discretionary spending. In the unlikely event that happens, it won't really matter, because to make a real dent in the deficit, it's necessary to cut spending on the military and entitlements. The president promised big government in the past, and he delivered. I expect more of the same. "However, Obama has truly been a hypocrite on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a candidate, he promised to end them. Tonight we heard more hollow promises. The fact is, as president, he has kept those wars going, and has greatly escalated the war in Afghanistan. As a percentage of GDP, military spending is higher now than it was during any year of the George W. Bush administration. "Unlike President Obama, Libertarians would bring our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan, and reduce the military budget. "On the Republican side, I found Congressman Paul Ryan's hypocrisy appalling. He claims to want big cuts in government spending. But he didn't seem to be too worried about cutting spending when Republicans were in charge. He supported the huge Medicare expansion in 2003, and the expensive No Child Left Behind Act in 2001. He supports the expensive War on Drugs. In 2008, he put hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars at risk by voting for the massive TARP bailout, and he even voted to spend billions on the GM and Chrysler bailout. "Just one month ago, Congressman Ryan voted for the tax compromise that included a big increase in unemployment spending, and even extensions of government spending on ethanol. "Republicans don't want to cut spending -- they want to talk about cutting spending. "Congressman Paul Ryan is a perfect example of why Republicans are bad for America. "Republicans' plans for Social Security and Medicare are little more than a distraction. It's time for someone to have the guts to tell seniors the truth: You were promised way too much, and now we've got to make major cuts. I'm asking retirees to think about the enormous debts piling up on your children and grandchildren. "Libertarians would stop spending billions on bailouts, the War on Drugs, federal education programs, and we would end mandatory Social Security and Medicare. "Today, America is a country that attracts hardworking immigrants from Mexico and around the world, leaving countries that are less free and prosperous. Libertarians welcome these immigrants warmly. But I often wonder if -- in 20 years -- America will still be a great place to live, or if it will be another declining civilization fraught with poverty and abuse that your children want to leave. "The future of America may depend on the Libertarian Party steering us towards liberty and away from tyranny. Though the Libertarian Party has no official stance on abortion, libertarians themselves are divided on the issue, with some considering abortion an act of aggression against a fetus, while others consider denying a woman the right to choose abortion to be an act of aggression against her.
The Libertarian Party views attempts by government to control obscenity or pornography as "an abridgment of liberty of expression" and opposes any government intervention to regulate it. According to former Libertarian National Committee Chairman Mark Hinkle, "Federal anti-obscenity laws are unconstitutional in two ways. First, because the Constitution does not grant Congress any power to regulate or criminalize obscenity. And second, because the First Amendment guarantees the right of free speech."
The Libertarian Party supports the legalization of prostitution. Many men and women with background in prostitution and activists for sex workers' rights, such as Norma Jean Almodovar and Starchild, have run for office on the Libertarian Party ticket or are active members of the party. Norma Jean Almodovar, a former officer with the Los Angeles Police Department and former call girl who authored the book From Cop To Call Girl about her experiences, ran on the Libertarian Party ticket for California lieutenant governor in 1986 and was actively supported by the party. Mark Hinkle described her as being the most able "of any Libertarian" "to generate publicity". The Massachusetts Libertarian Party was one of the few organizations to support a 1980s campaign to repeal prostitution laws.

An average libertarian learns what an average Tea Partier believes. Obviously, this doesn't reflect everyone's views. But it is based on my own experience as a libertarian, having attended a Tea Party last year. By then, the Tea Party has shifted away from Ron Paul, and resembled ideology closer to Sarah Palin's or Pat Robertson's. Many libertarians have since distanced themselves from the Tea Party because of this, while others still have hope for it.
One major motivation for me making this video, is because I'm tired of people painting libertarians and people like Glenn Beck with the same brush. Glenn Beck is NOT a libertarian. And the Tea Party is closer to neocon than it is libertarian. It's no wonder so many people are misinformed about libertarians.

*Update* People are telling me that not all Tea Parties are like this. I hope that's true. But the one I went to... there were posters of dead babies, a banner saying "we kicked god out, look at us now", signs calling Obama a Muslim and Kenyan, a speaker saying that chili day in September was proof that Global Warming is a lie, a speaker saying "if you don't support the war, you don't support the troops", rhetoric against gays, atheists, and Muslims, ... and literally every speaker invoked their religion, like "Barrack HUSSEIN Obama is not our leader, god is!" Basically, the Tea Party was advertised as libertarian, but it was indiscernible from the Christian-Right. If that Westboro Baptist Church group switched out their anti-troop signs, they would have fit right in.
*Update 2* Yeah, I know libertarians are on both sides of abortion. I myself can argue both sides. My point with that was to point out the illogical reasons I hear from the Tea Party conservative types. Where a libertarian would bring up concepts like eviction, personhood, or property rights, the Tea Partier types generally can't get past the "Because Jesus that's why!" phase.

WASHINGTON - This evening, Libertarian Party Executive Director Wes Benedict spoke in response to the addresses from President Barack Obama and Congressman Paul Ryan.

"Good evening and thank you for your interest in the State of our Union.
"My name is Wes Benedict. I'm the executive director of the Libertarian National Committee here in Washington, DC. The Libertarian Party stands for free markets, civil liberties, and peace.
"Tonight we heard from President Barack Obama and a response from Republican Congressman Paul Ryan.
"President Obama says he wants a freeze in non-security, discretionary spending. In the unlikely event that happens, it won't really matter, because to make a real dent in the deficit, it's necessary to cut spending on the military and entitlements. The president promised big government in the past, and he delivered. I expect more of the same.
"However, Obama has truly been a hypocrite on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a candidate, he promised to end them. Tonight we heard more hollow promises. The fact is, as president, he has kept those wars going, and has greatly escalated the war in Afghanistan. As a percentage of GDP, military spending is higher now than it was during any year of the George W. Bush administration.
"Unlike President Obama, Libertarians would bring our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan, and reduce the military budget.
"On the Republican side, I found Congressman Paul Ryan's hypocrisy appalling. He claims to want big cuts in government spending. But he didn't seem to be too worried about cutting spending when Republicans were in charge. He supported the huge Medicare expansion in 2003, and the expensive No Child Left Behind Act in 2001. He supports the expensive War on Drugs. In 2008, he put hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars at risk by voting for the massive TARP bailout, and he even voted to spend billions on the GM and Chrysler bailout.
"Just one month ago, Congressman Ryan voted for the tax compromise that included a big increase in unemployment spending, and even extensions of government spending on ethanol.
"Republicans don't want to cut spending -- they want to talk about cutting spending.
"Congressman Paul Ryan is a perfect example of why Republicans are bad for America.
"Republicans' plans for Social Security and Medicare are little more than a distraction. It's time for someone to have the guts to tell seniors the truth: You were promised way too much, and now we've got to make major cuts. I'm asking retirees to think about the enormous debts piling up on your children and grandchildren.
"Libertarians would stop spending billions on bailouts, the War on Drugs, federal education programs, and we would end mandatory Social Security and Medicare.
"Today, America is a country that attracts hardworking immigrants from Mexico and around the world, leaving countries that are less free and prosperous. Libertarians welcome these immigrants warmly. But I often wonder if -- in 20 years -- America will still be a great place to live, or if it will be another declining civilization fraught with poverty and abuse that your children want to leave.
"The future of America may depend on the Libertarian Party steering us towards liberty and away from tyranny.
"The Libertarian Party is America's third-largest party, and one of the most successful alternative parties in American history.
"We are recruiting bold, principled men and women dedicated to freedom to fill leadership positions and to run for office as Libertarians.
"You don't have to agree with every single Libertarian position to join the Libertarian Party. You can still make a difference and help us move our country towards freedom.

Executive Director, Wes Benedict, of the Libertarian Party responds to President Barack Obama's address as well as the Republican response.

WASHINGTON - This evening, Libertarian Party Executive Director Wes Benedict spoke in response to the addresses from President Barack Obama and Congressman Paul Ryan.

A transcript of Mr. Benedict's speech follows:
"Good evening and thank you for your interest in the State of our Union.
"My name is Wes Benedict. I'm the executive director of the Libertarian National Committee here in Washington, DC. The Libertarian Party stands for free markets, civil liberties, and peace.
"Tonight we heard from President Barack Obama and a response from Republican Congressman Paul Ryan.
"President Obama says he wants a freeze in non-security, discretionary spending. In the unlikely event that happens, it won't really matter, because to make a real dent in the deficit, it's necessary to cut spending on the military and entitlements. The president promised big government in the past, and he delivered. I expect more of the same.
"However, Obama has truly been a hypocrite on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a candidate, he promised to end them. Tonight we heard more hollow promises. The fact is, as president, he has kept those wars going, and has greatly escalated the war in Afghanistan. As a percentage of GDP, military spending is higher now than it was during any year of the George W. Bush administration.
"Unlike President Obama, Libertarians would bring our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan, and reduce the military budget.
"On the Republican side, I found Congressman Paul Ryan's hypocrisy appalling. He claims to want big cuts in government spending. But he didn't seem to be too worried about cutting spending when Republicans were in charge. He supported the huge Medicare expansion in 2003, and the expensive No Child Left Behind Act in 2001. He supports the expensive War on Drugs. In 2008, he put hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars at risk by voting for the massive TARP bailout, and he even voted to spend billions on the GM and Chrysler bailout.
"Just one month ago, Congressman Ryan voted for the tax compromise that included a big increase in unemployment spending, and even extensions of government spending on ethanol.
"Republicans don't want to cut spending -- they want to talk about cutting spending.
"Congressman Paul Ryan is a perfect example of why Republicans are bad for America.
"Republicans' plans for Social Security and Medicare are little more than a distraction. It's time for someone to have the guts to tell seniors the truth: You were promised way too much, and now we've got to make major cuts. I'm asking retirees to think about the enormous debts piling up on your children and grandchildren.
"Libertarians would stop spending billions on bailouts, the War on Drugs, federal education programs, and we would end mandatory Social Security and Medicare.
"Today, America is a country that attracts hardworking immigrants from Mexico and around the world, leaving countries that are less free and prosperous. Libertarians welcome these immigrants warmly. But I often wonder if -- in 20 years -- America will still be a great place to live, or if it will be another declining civilization fraught with poverty and abuse that your children want to leave.
"The future of America may depend on the Libertarian Party steering us towards liberty and away from tyranny.
"The Libertarian Party is America's third-largest party, and one of the most successful alternative parties in American history.
"We are recruiting bold, principled men and women dedicated to freedom to fill leadership positions and to run for office as Libertarians.
"You don't have to agree with every single Libertarian position to join the Libertarian Party. You can still make a difference and help us move our country towards freedom.
