In this video Paul Andersen explains how resistors and capacitors affect circuits. The resistance of a resistor is affected by the resistivity of the material and the geometry of the resistor. The current through a resistor can be determined by Ohm’s Law. The capacitance of a capacitor is affected by the dielectric constant and the geometry of the capacitor. The charge of a capacitor is the product of the potential difference and the capacitance.

This procedure is tedious, but it requires very little fancy math and it's conceptually beautiful. You ought to be able to look at the finished product and explain WHY the values of voltage drops and currents for each resistor and combination of resistors have the relationships they do. Yay! You can now simplify any circuit with just one battery and a bunch of resistors...or can you?

In this video you will learn how to read the resistor color code by using the color code chart. With practical examples of 4-band, 5-band and 6-band resistors you will get a quick understanding. Practically all leaded resistors with a power rating up to one watt are marked with color bands. The coding is defined in the international standard IEC 60062. This standard describes the marking codes for resistors and capacitors. The colored bands specify together the resistance value, the tolerance and sometimes the reliability. The number of bands varies from three till six. As a minimum, two bands indicate the resistance value and one band to multiply the value.

A resistor is a passive two-terminal electrical component that implements electrical resistance as a circuit element. The current through a resistor is in direct proportion to the voltage across the resistor's terminals. Thus, the ratio of the voltage applied across a resistor's terminals to the intensity of current through the circuit is called resistance. This relation is represented by Ohm's law:

The current through a resistor can be determined by Ohm’s Law. The capacitance of a capacitor is affected by the dielectric constant and the geometry of the capacitor. The charge of a capacitor is the product of the potential difference and the capacitance.
