Sherlock Holmes had been appearing in the cinema for a dozen years when Georges Tréville made a series of two-reelers for Eclair, a French film company. If you think it odd that a French company was making Sherlock Holmes movies, well, there had been a Danish Holmes picture three years earlier.
Although the other Tréville Holmes movie I have seen, "The Copper Beeches", did not impress me, since Holmes is too cerebral a character for the silent screen, this is very watchable. The actor fits the lanky image of Holmes and his restrained movements contrast nicely with the stagier performances of the other actors. In addition, the heart of the story is very melodramatic, just made for the screen, and the photography, particularly the outdoor sequences, is very nicely composed.
Although this is not a film to recommend to anyone who is not both a Holmes and a silent film buff, those who are both should find it moderately entertaining.
Georges Treville appeared as Sherlock Holmes in a number of short features in 1912. His series of films was the first officially authorised series of Holmes Films, produced under the supervision of Conan Doyle himself. This is the 8th and final episode it is also the only episode that survives. The series comprised the following films, all directed by Adrien Caillard and produced by Eclair.

Am 10. Juni 2015 machte die französische Fregatte LATOUCHE-TREVILLE in Hamburg fest.
Unter dem Kommando von Kapitän zur See Matthieu Drevon nahm
Die Fregatte nahm an dem internationalen Manöver „Dynamic Mongoose 2015“, in norwegischen Gewässern, unter dem Kommando von Kapitän zur See Matthieu Drevon teil.
Das Ziel dieses Manövers war es, die U-Bootabwehr für Überwassereinheiten und für die U-Boote den Angriff auf Schiffsverbände zu üben.
Hierfür wurden von zehn NATO-Nationen, darunter auch Deutschland, siebzehn Einheiten gestellt.

Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes (/ˈʃɜːrlɒk ˈhoʊmz/) is a fictional character created by British author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A London-based "consulting detective" whose abilities border on the fantastic, Holmes is known for his astute logical reasoning, his ability to adopt almost any disguise, and his use of forensic science to solve difficult cases. The character first appeared in print in 1887, and was featured in four novels and 56 short stories by Conan Doyle, as well as later works by other authors. The first novel, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character's popularity grew with the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine, beginning with "A Scandal in Bohemia" in 1891; additional short-story series and two novels (published in serial form) appeared from then to 1927. The events in the stories take place from about 1880 to 1914.
All but four stories are narrated by Holmes's friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson. Two are narrated by Holmes himself ("The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier" and "The Adventure of the Lion's Mane"), and two others are written in the third person ("The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone" and "His Last Bow"). In two stories ("The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual" and "The Adventure of the Gloria Scott"), Holmes tells Watson the story from memory, with Watson narrating the frame story. The first and fourth novels, A Study in Scarlet and The Valley of Fear, include long passages of omniscient narrative of events unknown to either Holmes or Watson.

Georges Tréville
Georges Tréville (1875–1944) was a French actor and film director. During the silent era he played the gentlemen thief Arsène Lupin in several short films. He also went to Britain to film short Sherlock Holmes stories for the Éclair film company. Tréville later directed two British films for the Ideal Film Company.

Sherlock Holmes had been appearing in the cinema for a dozen years when Georges Tréville made a series of two-reelers for Eclair, a French film company. If you think it odd that a French company was making Sherlock Holmes movies, well, there had been a Danish Holmes picture three years earlier. Although the other Tréville Holmes movie I have seen, "The Copper Beeches", did not impress me, since Holmes is too cerebral a character for the silent screen, this is very watchable. The actor fits the lanky image of Holmes and his restrained movements contrast nicely with the stagier performances of the other actors. In addition, the heart of the story is very melodramatic, just made for the screen, and the photography, particularly the outdoor sequences, is very nicely composed. Although this is ...

Am 10. Juni 2015 machte die französische Fregatte LATOUCHE-TREVILLE in Hamburg fest. Unter dem Kommando von Kapitän zur See Matthieu Drevon nahm Die Fregatte nahm an dem internationalen Manöver „Dynamic Mongoose 2015“, in norwegischen Gewässern, unter dem Kommando von Kapitän zur See Matthieu Drevon teil. Das Ziel dieses Manövers war es, die U-Bootabwehr für Überwassereinheiten und für die U-Boote den Angriff auf Schiffsverbände zu üben. Hierfür wurden von zehn NATO-Nationen, darunter auch Deutschland, siebzehn Einheiten gestellt.

Although the other Tréville Holmes movie I have seen, "The Copper Beeches", did not impress me, since Holmes is too cerebral a character for the silent screen, this is very watchable. The actor fits the lanky image of Holmes and his restrained movements contrast nicely with the stagier performances of the other actors. In addition, the heart of the story is very melodramatic, just made for the screen, and the photography, particularly the outdoor sequences, is very nicely composed.
Although this is not a film to recommend to anyone who is not both a Holmes and a silent film buff, those who are both should find it moderately entertaining.

Am 10. Juni 2015 machte die französische Fregatte LATOUCHE-TREVILLE in Hamburg fest.
Unter dem Kommando von Kapitän zur See Matthieu Drevon nahm
Die Fregatte nahm an dem internationalen Manöver „Dynamic Mongoose 2015“, in norwegischen Gewässern, unter dem Kommando von Kapitän zur See Matthieu Drevon teil.
Das Ziel dieses Manövers war es, die U-Bootabwehr für Überwassereinheiten und für die U-Boote den Angriff auf Schiffsverbände zu üben.
Hierfür wurden von zehn NATO-Nationen, darunter auch Deutschland, siebzehn Einheiten gestellt.
