We focused on the ideas of ego and cultural taste that bubbled up throughout the interviews with Roger Ebert. They are essential to both creatives and the people who critique them. Was Ebert a genius? A blowhard? You be the judge.

Roger Ebert on the film
"'The Conversation' comes from another time and place than today’s thrillers, which are so often simple-minded. This movie is a sadly observant character study, about a man who has removed himself from life, thinks he can observe it dispassionately at an electronic remove, and finds that all of his barriers are worthless."

***CORRECTION*** Sierra Entertainment and the 'King's Quest' franchise are owned by Activision Publishing, Inc., NOT EA Games. That typo gets a whoopsie!
Are video games art? My senior thesis film. This film was made for academic purposes only and is 100% non-profit. I don't own any of the material used in the film, and all credits are at the end.
Made during the Fall semester of 2014, though I began developing the concept one year prior. I am extremely proud of how it turned out and am 100% confident in the final product. The first 3 minutes were edited a year before the rest of the film, which is why there's a bit of an audio shift in the narration early on. It's minor, but noticeable (I don't have my own recording studio, so I had to record the narration at home... And I really wanted Stephen Fry, but alas, he was not available).
Special mention goes to Brian Moriarty, who's "An Apology to Roger Ebert" talk at GDC in 2011 was the biggest inspiration and resource used for this film (and is referenced in the film many times). I encourage everyone to Google it and check it out, it's an excellent and insightful talk.
While you're at it, check out Kellee Santiago's TED talk at USC on YouTube as well. It's brief by comparison to Moriarty's, but also interesting.

Computer chips will eventually be put into our bodies in the name of the War on Terror. The federal government will know your heart rate, hear what you are saying but also can see what you are THINKING (your Mind), and identify where you are at all times. This will be a useful tool against all political dissenters -- a modern scarlet letter.
Lasrever: Take note that most Senators resisting forced RFID implants are Democrats. Take note that corporations and Republicans are consistently trying to pass these laws.
We are a terror attack or two away from the chip being forced under the notion of national security. You don't have to take my word for it look into "RFID" and "VeriChip" yourself. The legal battle is already upon us. North Dakota and Wisconsin has banned "forced" chipping of people.

Life Itself Film - Roger Ebert | Interview Director Steve James | Magnolia Pictures, Kartemquin Films , & CNN Films |
Acclaimed director Steve James (Hoop Dreams) and executive producers Martin Scorsese (The Departed) and Steven Zaillian (Moneyball) present LIFE ITSELF, a documentary film that recounts the inspiring and entertaining life of world-renowned film critic and social commentator Roger Ebert – a story that is by turns personal, funny, painful, and transcendent. Based on his bestselling memoir of the same name, LIFE ITSELF, explores the legacy of Roger Ebert’s life, from his Pulitzer Prize-winning film criticism at the Chicago Sun-Times to becoming one of the most influential cultural voices in America. - See more at: http://www.magpictures.com/lifeitself/#sthash.8RUXvXmF.dpuf
The film will dig deeper beyond the public’s perception of Roger as Pulitzer Prize winning film critic and star of Siskel & Ebert. We will reveal his ribald sense of humor, his passions for politics and justice, as well as Russ Meyer and big-breasted women; his wild days at the legendarily rough and tumble O’Rourke’s Pub, where he learned verbal combat but succumbed to alcoholism before joining AA in 1979; his marriage to Chaz which changed his life; and how he championed and befriended such filmmakers as Errol Morris, Werner Herzog, Ramin Bahrani, Gregory Nava, and Martin Scorsese. Roger has been rightly lionized in death. Life Itself will show the real man himself and the rich, complicated, and ultimately inspiring life he led.
On February 17, Magnolia Pictures releases our award-winning film Life Itself on Blu-Ray and DVD.

This is an interview I did with Siskel and Ebert from 1981 that aired on PBS in Las Vegas. Since Ebert's passing I thought this would serve in some small way as a tribute to him and his movie critic sparring partner Gene Siskel. This shows the great affection and respect between the two men and they were gracious to give a virtual nobody like me an extended interview. Part one is still missing, but I hope to piece it together soon. As you can tell this video is of mediocre quality, only a VHS copy survived thanks to my friend Alvin Zuckert who was also a production assistant on the shoot along with videographer Jamie Cortez.
