After the video of Laidback Luke, Steve Aoki, and Sander van Doorn from a festival went viral, where all 3 were "DJing" together, and Art Department criticized them for it, and someone made a similar video of them to a make them eat their words, I thought it would be fun to show people what DJs REALLY do, or what they SHOULD be doing instead of playing air guitar, twiddling knobs necessarily, or generally doing the same thing the crowd is doing but in the DJ booth.

One thing you should always do as a DJ, is get in the habit of recording your practice sessions. I always do this. I decided to upload one of my practice sessions for you guys to check out, so you can see all the mistakes, blunders, etc. But also see some of the good things I do.
I also tried to mount the camera in a more ideal spot. Sorry about some of the shaking.
Keep in mind this is not a showcase, this is a practice session. So I tend to use effects a lot more while practicing so I can see where effects are good and are bad.
Couple of things I know you are going to ask so I will clarify.
Question:
How come you tend to grab knobs and not turn them? Especially after transitions?
Answer:
This is a mental checklist I go through in my head to make sure effects aren't turned on, EQ's are set right, Gains are good, crossfaders are in the right spot etc. by touching the area, im mentally checking that section off. If something is wrong in the area, I can quickly make an adjustment. A lot of times if you are fast enough, people won't notice.
Question:
Is that your voice at the beginning?
Answer:
Yes.
Question:
Any of this planned out?
Answer:
The first two songs, then I just go from there, using stuff on the fly. Nothing was planned after the first two tracks that were loaded in the CDJ's

Carl Cox (born 29 July 1962, Barbados) is a British techno and house music DJ and producer.
Cox grew up in Oldham, Lancashire, before attending Glastonbury High Boys secondary modern school on Glastonbury Road in Morden.[citation needed] Cox began his career as a hardcore and rave DJ in the mid 1980s. One of the first gigs he played was in legendary promoters John Binton and Terry Onion's Squeeze my buttered Onions! club in Hackney, London Unconfirmed reports suggest he was coerced into swallowing an onion on stage, one of Terry's famous requests he gave to his acts. He was named the "Three Deck Wizard" after playing on three turntables simultaneously at the Second Summer of Love in 1988.[citation needed] He has performed at clubs such as The Eclipse, Edge, Shelly's, Sterns Nightclub, Heaven, Sir Henry's in Cork, Ireland and Angels and The Haçienda, as well as raves for Fantazia, Dreamscape, and Amnesia House. He now spearheads two record labels, Intec Records and 23rd Century Records. He also has his own stage every year at Ultra Music Festival called Carl Cox and Friends.

Thavius Beck is an electronic musician, producer and rapper based in Los Angeles, California. He is a certified trainer of Ableton Live. He was a member of Global Phlowtations.
Thavius Beck is originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He moved to Los Angeles, California when he was 16. He played alto and tenor sax all throughout school.
Thavius Beck has released three solo albums Decomposition, Thru and Dialogue on Mush Records. He released an album Zwarte Achtegrond (which means "black background" in the Dutch language) in collaboration with fellow Los Angeles rapper Subtitle under the group name Lab Waste. He has also put out solo releases under the moniker Adlib.
Thavius Beck has collaborated with various musicians from Cedric Bixler-Zavala to Busdriver. In 2007, he contributed a remix of "Survivalism" for Nine Inch Nails, as well as producing several tracks for Saul Williams on The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust!. He toured with Saul Williams initially as a bass guitar player.

One thing you should always do as a DJ, is get in the habit of recording your practice sessions. I always do this. I decided to upload one of my practice sessions for you guys to check out, so you can see all the mistakes, blunders, etc. But also see some of the good things I do. I also tried to mount the camera in a more ideal spot. Sorry about some of the shaking. Keep in mind this is not a showcase, this is a practice session. After the video of Laidback Luke, Steve Aoki, and Sander van Doorn from a festival went viral, where all 3 were "DJing" together, and Art Department criticized them for it, and someone made a similar video of them to a make them eat their words, I thought it would be fun to show people what DJs REALLY do, or what they SHOULD be doing instead of playing air guitar, twiddling knobs necessarily, or generally doing the same thing the crowd is doing but in the DJ booth.

If something is wrong in the area, I can quickly make an adjustment. A lot of times if you are fast enough, people won't notice.

Yes.

Any of this planned out?
Answer:
The first two songs, then I just go from there, using stuff on the fly. Nothing was planned after the first two tracks that were loaded in the CDJ's

One of the things that makes Ableton Live such a unique and powerful piece of software is a fundamental feature which completely changes how you are able to interact with your audio. This feature is called Warping. Warping allows you to manipulate the tempo and pitch of your audio independently of one another. What exactly is Warping and Slicing?
One of the things that makes Ableton Live such a unique and powerful piece of software is a fundamental feature which completely changes how you are able to interact with your audio. This feature is called Warping. Warping allows you to manipulate the tempo and pitch of your audio independently of one another. This means that you can change the pitch of a song to fit the pitch of another without changing the tempos, or you can slow down or speed up a piece of audio without altering the pitch. As someone who came from using hardware samplers like the Akai S-900, Roland W-30, and even the MPC 1000, you can imagine just how mind-blowing a discovery this was for me at the time... when you learn how to effectively warp audio and apply it to your songs, every sample becomes a new piece of elastic to be stretched to your liking.

Last week, we looked at how removing Stop buttons in the Session view combined with launching Scenes can help you when testing out different ideas for arrangements. This week, we will look a bit more at what is possible with scenes by editing the Scene Launch Tempo as well as the Scene Launch Time Signature.
These two options can be extremely helpful if you want to set up a live set using stems of completed songs. Each Scene can be comprised of stems from your songs, and then you can set the specific tempo and time signature for each scene/song. That way you can have control over individual tracks within a song (for effects, panning, volume, etc.) but still be able to launch all the stems associated with a song at once at their proper tempo and time signature. In our new Ableton Live video tutorial series "Did You Know?", Ableton Certified Trainer, Dubspot Instructor, and electronic musician Thavius Beck checks out less explored and slightly hidden features in Live. In the third installment of Did You Know? Thavius explores Live's Audio and MIDI Routing options and shows you how you can route audio from one Return channel to another Return channel simply by enabling the Sends on your Returns (which are disabled by default). This opens up more options in terms of routing audio, applying effects, and manipulating sounds.
When most people think of Ableton Live, they think of electronic musicians using it for live performance, and they think of glitchy sounding beats and warped audio. Live is great for all of those things, but one of the most powerful aspects of Live is how easy it is to route audio from one place to another within the software. Not only can you route audio from any MIDI or Audio track to any other Audio track, you can also send audio from one (or many) tracks to one of the Return channels, which gives you even more control over effects or options in terms of routing your signal.
What I did not know before was that you can also route audio from one Return channel to another Return channel by simply enabling the Sends on your Returns. Doing this gives you even more options in terms of routing your audio and manipulating it to your liking. In this video, we will put a Reverb on the A Return and a Ping Pong Delay on the B Return, enable the B Send on the A Return, and feed the output of the 100% wet Reverb into our Ping Pong Delay on the B Return (which is already set to Repitch mode). In this episode, Thavius offers tips and techniques for configuring third-party plug-in effects with Live, using Novation's Bass Station VST.
As nice as it is to have so many instruments and effects available within Live, there are many times when you will want to use a third-party plug-in instead. Thankfully not only are you able to use third-party effects, but you can also automate them and MIDI or key map their individual parameters to control them. There are many simple ways to do this, but in this video we will look at the Configure button that shows up when you unfold a third-party plug-in inside of Live.
For this example, I am using Novation's Bass Station plug-in. When I first put my Bass Station (or just about any other third-party plug-in not built into Live) onto a track, I get a pretty generic interface with a black square and circle (representing an X/Y grid) and not much else. What I would like to see instead are the parameters that I want to either automate or potentially map to my controller without having the Bass Station interface blocking my view of the arrangement. One way to do that is to unfold the effect (hit the triangle in the upper-left corner), which will reveal the Configure button. Once Configure is enabled, you can just click on the parameters in the effect that you want to see in Live's generic third-party effect interface. This will also make these parameters show up in the Arrangement View's automation lanes.
This can also be done by simply entering the MIDI or key mapping mode and clicking on parameters of the effect (without mapping them), or by altering the parameters while recording to the arrangement view. Using Configure is a great option when you don't want to inadvertently alter the parameters on other sections of the track or song after the fact; you can select the parameter you want to tweak, go the exact spot in the arrangement you want to tweak and automate it without recording it live. Hello everyone, and welcome to Season Two of my Dubspot video tutorial series, Did You Know? For those of you who are new to the series, these videos focus on exploring some of the lesser known features of our beloved piece of software, Ableton Live.
In this particular video, we will be exploring a feature that I myself very recently learned about (thanks Pat Cupo!) called Stretch MIDI Notes. The Stretch MIDI Notes feature allows the user to take a selected group of MIDI notes and stretch their duration, a lot like how you are able to stretch warped audio. You can either lengthen or shorten the duration of the selected notes, and even better is that you don't have to select every single note in the clip in order to start stretching... that way you can stretch the timing of the kicks and hi-hats without altering the timing of the snares for instance. All you need to do is select a note (or several, or all notes) in your MIDI clip, then right click in the clip, and at the bottom of the contextual menu you will see Stretch MIDI Notes!
Now as cool as a feature as this may be, if we can't find a practical usage for it then it doesn't really do us much good, right? Well I try to find a practical use for nearly everything... haha! The real gem in this tutorial video is learning how we can record ourselves stretching the MIDI notes in real time to the Arrangement view, consolidating the clips we end up with, quantizing the notes to our liking (not necessarily at 100% so we can retain some characteristics of that looser stretched timing), and bringing that new clip back into our Session view. By doing that, we turned a one-bar loop into something much more varied and interesting.
