Join us on a drive through the mesmerising forests of Kudremukh National Park, which is a part of the Western Ghats. This region is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is a joy to drive through. Traffic is scarce on this part of State Highway 66, and there's a time limit imposed on how long a vehicle can take to traverse through the Park. Take more than 90 minutes for the entire stretch and you'll be questioned and probably fined at the exit. My dad was kind enough to record all the videos in this compilation while I was driving. We managed to get clips of all the best parts of the scenic drive, and also shot videos of the best spots by taking quick, very hurried stops to record a few seconds of footage showing the landscape here.
The township developed by KIOCL can also be seen in one of the shots, as also parts of the fragile ecosystem that were ravaged by it during the course of 20+ years of mining here. The company has since been banned from operating here, and the mountains are slowly regaining life. Such is the way of nature.

At the heart of the stunning Kudremukh National Park in south India is a huge iron ore mine that has stripped the hills bare for over 20 years. Every year, heavy monsoon rains wash the loose soil from the mined slopes into the Bhadra River, leading to siltation on a massive scale. Floods caused by this siltation leave a thick sludge of iron ore on the fields of farmers cultivating along the banks of the Bhadra, greatly reducing the fertility of the soil. This disastrous mining project is one of the worst examples of bad land use and environmental destruction. "Mindless Mining -- the tragedy of Kudremukh", was made as a pro bono campaign film and played a major role in turning the tide of public and political opinion against the continuation of mining in this fragile ecosystem. The film was also submitted as evidence to the Supreme Court in a Public Interest case against the mining. In October 2002, after listening to extensive arguments, the Supreme Court ordered the closure of the iron ore mining operation in Kudremukh.

As my friend came back from UK, we decided to go on a roadtrip from his native place to my native place. An awesome ride between the two different districts of Karnataka, joined by mountain ranges made this trip worth every single moment. Kudremukh (Kannada: ಕುದುರೆಮುಖ) also spelled Kuduremukha is a mountain range in Chikkamagaluru district, in Karnataka, India. It is also the name of a small hill station town situated near the mountain, about 48 kilometers from Karkala and about 20 kilometers from Kalasa. The name Kuduremukha (as it is known by the natives) literally means 'horse-face' (in the local language Kannada) and refers to a particular picturesque view of a side of the mountain that resembles the same. It was also referred to as 'Samseparvata', historically since it was approached from Samse village.
The town of Kudremukh is primarily an iron ore mining town where the government run Public Sector Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd. (KIOCL) operated till the last decade. It is noted for its scenic beauty. Owing to the dense forests, sighting wildlife can be challenging, though the area is rich in wildlife. Nonetheless the drive through the forest ranges can be enchanting and exhilarating. Three important rivers, the Tunga, the Bhadra and the Nethravathi are said to have their origin here. A shrine of goddess Bhagavathi and a Varaha image, 1.8 m within a cave are the main attractions.

Every year, heavy monsoon rains wash the loose soil from the mined slopes into the Bhadra River, leading to siltation on a massive scale. Floods caused by this siltation leave a thick sludge of iron ore on the fields of farmers cultivating along the banks of the Bhadra, greatly reducing the fertility of the soil. This disastrous mining project is one of the worst examples of bad land use and environmental destruction. "Mindless Mining -- the tragedy of Kudremukh", was made as a pro bono campaign film and played a major role in turning the tide of public and political opinion against the continuation of mining in this fragile ecosystem. Kudremukh Trek - Christmas break 2015 - Go Pro - Xiaomi Yi
My kids - Rohit and Rajat, my nephews - Pranav and Praneeth and their friend Nikhil and I set out on this trek taking advantage of the holiday break. Due to poor planning and also heavy rush, we started the trek very late, failed to get a guide and ventured out ourselves. Could cover only 70%...still a trek of close to 15 kms in one day ain't bad....will be back soon! -

One has to trek 11kms from Mullodi(near Kalasa) to reach the Horse face,ie,Kudremukh peak.So Kudremukh peak trek comprises of total trek distance of 22kms. 22kms has to be covered in a single day.Because camping on the peak is strictly prohibited from the RFO,Karnataka.One has to pay nominal fee of Rs 275 per head to obtain the permission from RFO,Karnataka to trek Kudremukh Peak.Accommodation is available at Mullodi(sathish's house or Raje gowda's house). Join us on a drive through the mesmerising forests of Kudremukh National Park, which is a part of the Western Ghats. This region is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is a joy to drive through. Traffic is scarce on this part of State Highway 66, and there's a time limit imposed on how long a vehicle can take to traverse through the Park. Take more than 90 minutes for the entire stretch and you'll be questioned and probably fined at the exit. My dad was kind enough to record all the videos in this compilation while I was driving. We managed to get clips of all the best parts of the scenic drive, and also shot videos of the best spots by taking quick, very hurried stops to record a few seconds of footage showing the landscape here.
The township developed by KIOCL can also be seen in one of the shots, as also parts of the fragile ecosystem that were ravaged by it during the course of 20+ years of mining here. The company has since been banned from operating here, and the mountains are slowly regaining life. Such is the way of nature.

Every year, heavy monsoon rains wash the loose soil from the mined slopes into the Bhadra River, leading to siltation on a massive scale. Floods caused by this siltation leave a thick sludge of iron ore on the fields of farmers cultivating along the banks of the Bhadra, greatly reducing the fertility of the soil.
