The fact that our lifespans have nearly doubled in the last one hundred years says a lot about how we have grown, evolved, and developed as a species. But interestingly enough, we don’t know much about our own body, such as how to ticks, what makes it function and other ways that help us just exist. Here are some of the most fascinating facts about the human body that’s sure to get your senses tingling. Did you know that as we’re born, we are born with 270 bones in our bodies. But as we get older, our bones fuse together and we’re left with about 206 bones total. Our heart beats over 100,000 times a day, and starts beating about 4 weeks after we are conceived. Even if the heart if removed from our bodies, it will keep beating as it functions on its own electrical impulse. Our eyes can see over ten million colors and initially sees everything upside down until the brain flips everything back over. Our nose is pretty amazing, as it is the crucial link to the working of our sense of taste. The nose can remember over 50,000 different scents and associates them with specific memories. That’s why we can be taken back to places, different periods of our life, and more if we smell something that is identical in scent to that memory. The nose also acts as our own air system, by cooling down hot air and warming up cold air as it enters our body. Then we have skin. We shed about 600,000 particles of skin every hour, which in total equals to about 1.5 pounds per year. Before you go into full gag mode, remember this, by the time we die, especially if in our seventies, about 100 pounds of skin would have been shed in total. Also, if you bite your fingernails, stop as soon as you can, as you are preventing the growth of your nails. Toe and fingernails are made out of a protein called keratin, which is the same thing your hair is made out of. Fingernails grow a lot faster than toenails by about four times. Also, men’s fingernails actually grow faster than women’s. Have you ever wondered if you could taste numbers and smell colors? There is a phenomenon affecting about 4% of the population called synesthesia, which is the overlapping of senses. It is unknown as to why this sort of phenomenon happens, but it’s rampant enough that scientists are baffled and trying to investigate it. If you have ever looked up into the stars and wonder if we came from them, then you’re right. Nails And Hair Do Not Continue To Grow After We Die. They do appear longer when we die, but It's not that the fingernails and hair are growing, but that the skin around them has dehydrated, the skin dries out and retracts which makes the hair and nails appear longer. The Pink Thing In The Inside Corner Of Your Eye Is Called The Plica Semilunaris And Is An evolutionary Leftover. The plica semilunaris is a remnant of a nictitating membrane, more commonly known as a third eyelid. It would have moved across the eye horizontally to protect, moisten and wipe away debris while maintaining visibility. Many fish, birds, reptiles and even some mammals like camels and polar bears have a third eye lid. Facial Hair Grows Faster Than Any Other Hair On The Human Body . If the average man did not shave his facial hair during his entire life, it would grow to over 30 feet ,which is about the same length as double-decker bus. Babies Are Born With 300 Bones But By Adulthood The Number Is Reduced To 206. The reason for this is that many of the bones of children are comprised of smaller component bones that are not yet fused like those in the skull, this makes it easier for a baby to pass through the birth canal, the bones then harden and fuse as the child grows. Your Heart Beats About 100,000 Times A Day. During the average persons lifespan, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times, that's around 35 million times in just one year, so about 100,000 times a day. Human Bones Ounce For Ounce Are Stronger Than Steel. A cubic inch of bone can in principle bear a load roughly the equivalent of five pickup trucks. The strongest bone in the body is the femur or thighbone, which is about 48cm long. Our bones can also be made stronger, the impact of your feet hitting ground when running or the shock waves that are sent up your arm when punching a punch bag, create microscopic fractures that not only do your bones fix but also build extra bone on top off. From The Age Of Thirty Humans Gradually Begin To Shrink In Size. Research has shown that by age 70, on average, men have become around an inch shorter and women around 2 inches shorter, with another inch lost by 80. This is because the discs between our vertebrates are compressed over time, also with age we become less efficient at replacing bone so our bones can also lose size and density. The Surface Area Of A Human Lung Is Equal To A Tennis Court. In order to more efficiently oxygenate the blood, the lungs are filled with thousands of branching bronchi, filled with microscopic capillaries which convert oxygen to carbon dioxide.
