I put this aerial drone video together to display the phenomenal beauty of Meteora Greece during the fall from a perspective that few people have ever seen before.
This video was shot entirely using the DJI Inspire Pro Drone, the new X5 Micro 4/3 Camera and MFT 15mm f/1.7 Lens. Editing and color grading was done using Adobe Premiere Pro.
Meteora holds a very special place in my heart since it was one of the first places I visited back in 2010 when I was aggressively trying to build my travel photography portfolio. I knew it would be the perfect location to put my new DJI X5 Camera to good use.

What to See & Do in Meteora, Greece
http://davidsbeenhere.com In this episode of the David’s Been Here web show, David takes viewers through the beautiful lands of Meteora, Greece. Situated in Thessaly, Meteora lies in the heart of Greece. Meteora literally translates into 'suspended in the air’. Here David shows and tells us what to see and do in Meteora, Greece.
Meteora has two main towns, Kastraki village and the town of Kalabaka, which is home to the majority of hotels, restaurants, and shops. A must-do for anyone is a guided half-day bus tour. You’ll get to experience the unique landscapes of Meteora's stone forest. Even from the bus there are incredible vistas. You’ll stop at the Great Meteoran Monastery, which is the oldest, tallest, and largest monastery here. Admission to the monastery is 3 euros.
David’s bus tour also stops by one of the most ancient sites in Greece, Theopetra Prehistoric Cave. Since excavations began in the 80’s several important finds have been made. Among them include human bones, stone tools and human footprints dating back 135,000 years!
Meteora also has a lot in store for adventure travelers. One of the main activities is hiking through the Stone Forest. When you go on your hike, your guide will give you history lessons and legends along the way. If you’re willing to do a short but challenging climb, you’ll be rewarded with picturesque views from Dragon’s Cave.
Adrenaline junkies: Meteora has you covered. If you want to bring the adventure up a notch, try scramble hiking. This type of hike is similar to rock climbing but requires less equipment and the use of your hands to pull yourself up the ropes. You’ll be rewarded with epic views of Kalabaka. Traditional rock climbing is also an option for experienced and newbie climbers alike.
And if you didn't know Meteora has wineries! Loudas Winery is a family-run boutique winery 5 minutes from Kalabaka. They’ve been open since 2006 and specialize in both Greek and international varieties. Come to taste some of Meteora’s most popular wines and buy gifts for your family and friends back home. If you’re there during the September harvest season you’ll get to see the winemaking process first hand, and possibly get a tour from the owner himself.
If you’re wondering how to limit what to see and do in Meteora, just know this: You CAN’T miss a sunset tour. There are two popular viewpoints where groups gather to see the sunset. It is truly a sunset you won’t soon forget. It’s also a great time to photograph the dramatic rock formations that Meteora is known for.

The Metéora (Greek: Μετέωρα, "suspended rocks", "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above" - etymologically similar to "Meteorite") is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos. The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece. The nearest town is Kalambaka. The Metéora is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List under criteria I, II, IV, V and VII.
The Theopetra caves 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) south of Meteora had inhabitants fifty millennia ago. The cave of Theopetra, Kalambaka, radiocarbon evidence for 50,000 years of human presence, Radiocarbon 43(2B): 1029-1048.[citation needed][clarification needed]
In the 9th century, an ascetic group of hermit monks moved up to the ancient pinnacles.
They were the first people to inhabit Metéora. They lived in hollows and fissures in the rock towers, some of which reach 1800 ft (550m) above the plain. This great height, combined with the sheerness of the cliff walls, kept away all but the most determined visitors. Initially the hermits led a life of solitude, meeting only on Sundays and special days to worship and pray in a chapel built at the foot of a rock known as Dhoupiani. As early as the 11th century AD hermit monks were believed to be living among the caves and cutouts in the rocks.

I put this aerial drone video together to display the phenomenal beauty of Meteora Greece during the fall from a perspective that few people have ever seen before. This video was shot entirely using the DJI Inspire Pro Drone, the new X5 Micro 4/3 Camera and MFT 15mm f/1.7 Lens. Editing and color grading was done using Adobe Premiere Pro. Meteora holds a very special place in my heart since it was one of the first places I visited back in 2010 when I was aggressively trying to build my travel photography portfolio. What to See & Do in Meteora, Greece
http://davidsbeenhere.com In this episode of the David’s Been Here web show, David takes viewers through the beautiful lands of Meteora, Greece. Situated in Thessaly, Meteora lies in the heart of Greece. Meteora literally translates into 'suspended in the air’. Here David shows and tells us what to see and do in Meteora, Greece.
Meteora has two main towns, Kastraki village and the town of Kalabaka, which is home to the majority of hotels, restaurants, and shops. A must-do for anyone is a guided half-day bus tour. You’ll get to experience the unique landscapes of Meteora's stone forest. Even from the bus there are incredible vistas. You’ll stop at the Great Meteoran Monastery, which is the oldest, tallest, and largest monastery here. Admission to the monastery is 3 euros.
David’s bus tour also stops by one of the most ancient sites in Greece, Theopetra Prehistoric Cave. Since excavations began in the 80’s several important finds have been made. Among them include human bones, stone tools and human footprints dating back 135,000 years!
Meteora also has a lot in store for adventure travelers. One of the main activities is hiking through the Stone Forest. When you go on your hike, your guide will give you history lessons and legends along the way. If you’re willing to do a short but challenging climb, you’ll be rewarded with picturesque views from Dragon’s Cave.
Adrenaline junkies: Meteora has you covered. If you want to bring the adventure up a notch, try scramble hiking. This type of hike is similar to rock climbing but requires less equipment and the use of your hands to pull yourself up the ropes. You’ll be rewarded with epic views of Kalabaka. Traditional rock climbing is also an option for experienced and newbie climbers alike.
And if you didn't know Meteora has wineries! Loudas Winery is a family-run boutique winery 5 minutes from Kalabaka. They’ve been open since 2006 and specialize in both Greek and international varieties. Come to taste some of Meteora’s most popular wines and buy gifts for your family and friends back home. If you’re there during the September harvest season you’ll get to see the winemaking process first hand, and possibly get a tour from the owner himself.
If you’re wondering how to limit what to see and do in Meteora, just know this: You CAN’T miss a sunset tour. There are two popular viewpoints where groups gather to see the sunset. It is truly a sunset you won’t soon forget. It’s also a great time to photograph the dramatic rock formations that Meteora is known for.

Well this is where the tourists don’t go
When you come to Meteora make sure that
you do a hiking tour because this is spectacular

We’re here on the ancient footpath
which used to be the only way you could reach
the monasteries
pretty cool
So this hike is really interesting because we’re
going behind all of the stone pillars
and we’re seeing a monastery that can’t be seen from the road
sower’s off the actual tourist route
and seeing some of the more quiet monasteries
the one behind me is one that they use for a retreat
to get away from the tourists in the high season
Does it count if I say what my wish is?
I wish the weather would change and
the sun would come out over Meteora
So before 1922 they way that you got up here
was they put you in a small little net
and two monks would stay up here and much that wheel around
and as the rope got shorter and shorter that’s how you’d get up
quite an adventure
And here’s the sun
Had a great time here in Meteora exploring
the beautiful monasteries and just stunning landscape

Nema mnogo mjesta u svijetu koja su na toliko različit način interesantna kao što je to grčka Meteora ili „lebdeće stijene“, kako ih još zovu. Nije ni čudo jer ovaj dio svijeta nudi ljepotu prirode, duhovnost religije, mističnu prošlost i adrenalin sportskih izazova. Meteoru su prvi nastanili pravoslavni isposnici, koji su se u ovim visokim stijenama pokušali u potpunosti posvetiti bogosluženju i traženju ključeva ljudske egzistencije. U strmoglavim stijenama grčke Meteore istražili smo zašto su se ljudi odlučivali na teški monaški život, šta je to u ljudskoj prirodi što ih je opredijelilo da, poput lastavica, odluče živjeti na liticama.
Meteora je tamo gdje su priroda i čovjek dali najbolje od sebe. Zbog toga je žele vidjeti ljudi iz cijelog svijeta. Bilo da su zainteresovani za estetiku, duhovnost, vjeru ili arhitekturu. Crkvene vlasti u Meteori imaju potpunu samostalnost u ekonomskom i svakom drugom smislu. Mediji ih previše ne zanimaju, a ekonomija, porezi i slično pitanja su pred kojima se i mudra kornjača povlači u svoj oklop.
Popularnosti Meteore svakako je doprinio i film „Samo za tvoje oči“, u kojem se Roger Moore, kao tajni agent 007, penje po okomitim liticama.

Meteora is wonderful place( unique and unbelievable) where you can find 6 monasteries , 4 inhibited by men and 2 inhibited by women. The closest city is Kalambaka at just 5 km where you can find some hotels but the prices are pretty high , I suggest you to get accomodation in Larissa(100km away) or in Thessaloniki(250km away) , Meteora is a 1 day destination because if you follow to main road you can visit all monasteries in just few hours. You can visit here also a cave.

Well, good afternoon from sunny Athens. We are currently exploring the Greek capital. We recently actually spent a few days traveling around Meteora and now we're finishing up our trip here in Athens. We've got two full days to explore the city which isn't a lot of time but we're going to try to do our best. So let's get ready and start exploring.
Our first stop was one of the most recognized sights in Athens - the Parthenon, which was dedicated to the goddess Athena who was seen as the patron of Athens.
After sunset we lingered atop Mount Lycabettus for some night views of the city before taking the funicular down to the bottom. Seeing the Acropolis all lit up at night was a pretty cool sight!
Next up we visited the Temple of Zeus which once housed the statue of Zeus, and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
When it comes to shopping, there are a few different options. We made our way to Monastiraki, which is one of the principal shopping districts in Athens. Here we visited both the Flea Market and the antique shops in the area.
The Agora was the central spot in ancient Greek city-states, and it is where people gathered.
So we are wrapping up our time here in Athens. Any surprises or final thoughts to share? Yeah, something that really surprised me were just the amount of stray animals that I saw on the streets. Lots of cats and dogs.
I also thought there was really good dining options as well. We had a number of really good Greek meals and also some really good International food too.
Final thoughts, I think this is a really underrated capital in Europe. A lot like Warsaw in Poland so if you have an opportunity to visit Athens in Greece definitely do so.
So what did you think of Athens? Well, I thought it was a really cool city and I actually had a great time here. It kind of reminded me a little bit of Tel Aviv with the Mediterranean feel but also Berlin because it is very artsy and gritty. So it's a really cool place to check out. Great food, lots of attractions. You have a mix of antiquity with urban. So it's really fun and it is unlike any place I've been before, so I would highly recommend it.

This travel video showcases our adventures exploring Meteora, Greece over the duration of several days where we had the opportunity to hike, visit monasteries and explore caves.
Touring Meteora, Greece Travel Video Transcript:
Well hello from Greece! Sam and I are currently visiting Meteora which means suspended in the sky. This is a place that is really well known for its monasteries built atop these rocks. And the landscape is usually out of this world but as you can see we are dealing with a bit of fog and rain today. So it is going to be a bit tricky. Um, we were planning to do a bit of hiking actually but I think that is not going to work out so we're going to settle for some monasteries and caves instead. So let's get ready and go.
Since the weather wasn't really cooperating we ended up hopping in a van and driving out to some different look out points around Meteora. Everywhere we turned we were greeted with sweeping views of the towns below, impressive monasteries seeming to defy gravity, and imposing rock towers that looked out of this world. The rain did eventually clear up and that's when we went back to our original plan for a hike around Meteora.
Okay guys, so we are finally hitting the trails. It's going to be a 10 kilometer hike. So far we've already been seeing ruined monasteries and the landscapes are amazing. So let's continue. We have to catch up with our group.
Behind me are some massive boulders which are really popular for rock climbing. We're not really into that so we're just doing a hike today. But if you're into rock climbing you've got to try it over here.
The hike was a really easy one and perfect for most fitness levels. Our guide lead us down dirt trails and we learned that there is a network of over 35 kilometers of foot paths in this area. Along the way he pointed out strange rock formations, various mushrooms growing in the forest, and the best part was hearing the tales behind each of the ruins we visited.
This is the place where you can taste the echo. Listen! Echo! Woo!
It's raining outside, we've got an abandoned monastery in the background and we're going to do our best echoes.
So we've been visiting a lot of different ruined or abandoned monasteries and this is one of them. Now there is a pretty interesting story behind this one. Apparently, monks used to live here and one day they were out who knows doing some gardening or whatever when a group of people came over and they just took over their home. They started squatting and they took control of the monastery for over 80 years. So the poor monks had to find somewhere else to live. Now today this one has been renovated but you can't actually visit it. So we're just admiring it from a distance. Pretty spectacular I'd say.
The rain clouds have returned and it is pouring right now. That is the end of our 10 kilometer hike. We're going to go have some lunch, dry up and maybe head out again in the afternoon. by bus. So we'll check out some monasteries later.
Okay, so it is still raining but we are going to go visit the biggest monastery here in Meteora. It's called the Grand Meteoron. Low and behold. It's just over there. We've got our umbrellas. Let's go visit it.
And lucky for us today you can reach the top by climbing the stairs. Three hundred stairs to the top. But back in the day you would have had to use a rope and basically hoist yourself up or had someone pull you up because you know they were quite secluded and they wanted to keep it that way. So if you wanted to make it here you had to earn it.
Any tips on visiting here? Yes! I actually do have a tip. So prior to coming to Meteora I would have thought okay let's hop on a bus, we'll reach the monastery. Visit the monastery and that will be it. But if you do it that way you're missing out on so much more because the landscapes here are incredible. So I would recommend doing a hike. Kind of like what we did this morning because then you really get to admire the monastery, see them from a distance. You get to visit caves and also visit the abandoned ruins of former monasteries that are kind of hidden and you wouldn't normally be able to spot if you were on the main road. So something to consider. You can get a bit of exercise and really enjoy the landscapes.
It wasn't until our final morning in Meteora that the rain clouds finally cleared and we had blue skies over the valley. Though I have to say, we still loved it even in the rain, and that's the sign of a good visit!

Greece is the cradle of the European civilization, a quarry of mythology and ancient relics. On the Chalkidiki Peninsula we can visit the city of Thessalonica, the beaches of Katerini and Paralia, and from the boat we can take a look at the mystical monastery republic, Athos. Near the legendary Olympus Mountain we can take a look at the ‘rocks of gods’, the Meteora monasteries built on the sky-high cliffs. Athens’s well known building is the Acropolis, which is garlanded by the golden pillars of the Parthenon. The Agora was the marketplace of the ancient Athens, while the Plaka is a current, full of life eastern bazaar. From the capital the visitors can take journeys to the canal of Corinth and to the beaches of the Attican Riviera. From the dock of Pireus it is easy to take a boat and visit the islands of the Aegean and Ionic Sea. The islands tell us of Romans, Byzantines, pirates and knights. Among the olive tree gardens and orange trees white houses, temples and sunlit ruins are hiding. The sea is blue in the bays surrounded by beaches and on the terrace of a tavern the flavors of the Greek cuisine are always welcome.

If we had to narrow down our favorite experience in Meteora, Greece it would have to be hiking. Come join us as we hike the Holy Spirit Rock Trail where we visit caves, view monasteries off in the distance and reach the summit where we have amazing views down below.
Hiking Meteora's Caves in Greece Travel Video Transcript:
Meteora's monasteries may get all the attention, but if you look a bit closer at the landscape you'll notice that it is dotted with caves - caves where men once dwelled! This is something that piqued our curiosity, so we devoted a whole morning to cave-hopping around the area.
So we have another fun day planned in Meteora. Today we're going around and visiting caves. And now there is a lot of different caves. Earlier in the morning we visited some that were used kind of like to keep farm animals, sheep and goats because they were very accessible and at a lower level. And right now we're visiting caves that were used by hermits and that means monks who wanted to be secluded and just live a very quiet simple life on their own.
So these monks in Meteora were extreme adventurers in my opinion. They wanted the caves that were really high up and could not be reached by others so that they could be in isolation on their own. So in order to reach these caves they would have literally had to scale using their hands the first time. And then use ropes and ladders to reach them later on.
The monks eventually built monasteries, but don't let that fool you into thinking they were any easier to access. Reaching the top involved a lot of bravado and a whole lot of upper body strength.
Next up we're going to be climbing the Holy Spirit Rock which is right behind us. This isn't going to be rock climbing. Apparently there is a trail around the other side so let's go follow our guide because he is already leaving without us.
In the afternoon we set our sights on the Holy Ghost Tower which sits in the middle of the valley. It was a good challenge and we were rewarded with some pretty breathtaking views from the top, but my favourite part was walking down the other side and coming face to face with a cave that once acted as a jail for monks!
We've been climbing up The Holy ghost tower and right now we've reached a little chapel inside a cave. So let's go have a look.

This is our reward for climbing Holy Spirit Tower. Fresh pomegranate! Mmmm.
And it is delicious. So refreshing.
So right now we are standing at the mouth of what I'm calling the naught monks cave. This was basically like a jail so if a monk was misbehaving he would be sent here and they had fourteen different ledgers which were basically like prison cells where the monks would be placed in isolation. So let's go inside and have a look.

The Metéora is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List .
The Metéora, literally "middle of the sky", "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above", is one of the largest and most important complexes of Greek Orthodox monasteries in Greece.
Caves in the vicinity of Metéora were inhabited continuously between 50,000 and 5,000 years ago. The oldest known example of a man-made structure, a stone wall that blocked two-thirds of the entrance to the Theopetra Cave, was constructed 23,000 years ago, probably as a barrier against cold winds – the Earth was experiencing an ice age at the time – and many Paleolithic and Neolithic artifacts have been found within the caves.
In the 9th century AD, an ascetic group of hermit monks moved up to the ancient pinnacles; they were the first people to inhabit Metéora since the Neolithic Era.
The exact date of the establishment of the monasteries is unknown, but by the end of the 12th century, an ascetic community had flocked to Metéora.

Ein UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe, Meteora in Griechenland Ebene von Thessalien, etwa vier Stunden von Athen entfernt. Der Standort war einst die Heimat von 24 Klöstern (sechs stehen noch heute), die oben auf dieser ikonischen Felsnadeln, die an mehr als 1.300 Fuß stehen und scheinen zu sitzen "in der Luft."
Die Seite wird vor allem von Touristen unentdeckt, entsprechend Atlas Obscura, aber das könnte sich ändern. Meteora Rolle in "Game of Thrones" als "der Eyrie" könnte nur machen es zu einem Ziel für Fans eine Pilgerreise nach der Show Drehorte. The site is mostly undiscovered by tourists, according to Atlas Obscura, but that could change. Meteora's role in "Game of Thrones" as "the Eyrie" might just turn it into a destination for fans making a pilgrimage to the show's filming locations. The site was also featured in the 1981 James Bond film, "For Your Eyes Only."
So, why should you go here? For the views, for the scenery and for the climb. Visitors can ascend the rock pinnacles and visit the still-functioning monasteries. Even if you're not religious, it's an incredible, bucket-list worthy experience.
