You don’t know who you’re talking to, and whether or not they are being honest. Best case scenario is that the meeting and interaction is positive. People use Craigslist for a variety of reasons from buying and selling things, trying to meet new people, seeking employment, and more. Craigslist is utilized by so many people today, that one often looks over the potential risk of meeting someone that you don’t know. Craigslist has seem to have turned into a supermarket for lawbreakers. Recently, the story of Dynel Lane has hit the news waves because she attacked 26-year old Michelle Wilkins, who was seven months pregnant. They originally met over Craigslist and Michelle was trying to get baby clothes from Lane. Michelle survived the attack, but Lane cut her baby out of her womb and it did not survive. Michelle was one of the lucky ones, these ten Craigslist murders are some of the most disturbing cases in history. Like the story of Dynel Lane, a woman by the name of Korena Roberts posted an ad selling baby clothes. 21-year old Heather Snively answered the ad and met Korena in her home, where she proceeded to stab Heather and cut her baby out of the womb. Neither Heather nor the baby survived, but that didn’t stop Korena from trying to pass off the baby as her own. Phillip Markoff reached international fame as one of the original Craigslist killers. He would lure and attack women who posted massage ads on the website, as well as robbing them. One of those attacks left Julissa Brisman dead. Markoff’s story inspired the Lifetime original movie, “The Craigslist Killer”, and everyone knew who he was. Unable to handle the pressure and his life being ruined, Markoff killed himself in prison. Then we have killers who simply wanted to enjoy the thrill of killing and shopped for victims on Craigslist. Elytte and Miranda Barbour were such a couple, as they wanted to kill someone together. They lured a man by the name of Troy LeFerrara by replying to his ad asking for female companionship. Miranda picked Troy up from a local mall, not realizing that Elytte was hiding in the backseat with a rope. While Elytte was strangling Troy, Miranda proceeded to stab him 6 times. They dumped his body in the river soon after. The couple was caught after Troy’s phone was found and it was shown that he was in contact with Miranda, who admitted to committing several more killings across the country. These are just a few of some of the most disturbing murders that have happened because of Craigslist. If anything, this list should serve as a grim reminder to always meet in public places, and never be alone with someone you met on the infamous site. Unfortunately, there will be people who will not heed this warning and will be added to this ongoing list soon enough.
