Sirvió en la Marina de los EE.UU. durante dos años, principalmente como arreglista de la banda Base Naval de Newport en Newport, Rhode Island. Después de la guerra asistió a Manhattan College , mientras que el estudio de la composición y al frente de su propia banda para los bailes.
