Natsume Sōseki (夏目 漱石?, February 9, 1867 – December 9, 1916), born Natsume Kinnosuke (夏目 金之助?), is widely considered to be the foremost Japanese novelist of the Meiji period (1868–1912). He is best known for his novels Kokoro, Botchan, I Am a Cat and his unfinished work Light and Darkness. He was also a scholar of British literature and composer of haiku, Chinese-style poetry, and fairy tales. From 1984 until 2004, his portrait appeared on the front of the Japanese 1000 yen note.
Born as Natsume Kinnosuke in the town of Babashita in the Edo region of Ushigome (present Kikui, Shinjuku), Natsume began his life as an unwanted child, born to his mother late in her life, forty years old and his father then fifty-three. When he was born, he already had five siblings. Having five children and a toddler had created family insecurity and was in some ways a disgrace to the Natsume family. In 1868, a childless couple, Shiobara Masanosuke and his wife, adopted him until the age of nine, when the couple divorced. He returned to his family and was welcomed by his mother although regarded as a nuisance by his father. His mother died when he was fourteen, and his two eldest brothers died in 1887, intensifying his sense of insecurity.[citation needed]

Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio (/dɨˈkæpri.oʊ/; born November 11, 1974) is an American actor and film producer. He has been nominated for the Golden Globe Award eight times as an actor, and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Aviator (2004). He has also been nominated by the Academy Awards, Screen Actors Guild, Satellite Awards, and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, DiCaprio started his career by appearing in television commercials prior to landing recurring roles in TV series such as the soap opera Santa Barbara and the sitcom Growing Pains in the early 1990s. 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Three Cornered World, Alan Turney’s award-winning translation of Kusamakura by Japan’s great literary maestro Natsume Soseki (1867-1916). Two years after it was published, the translation was read by the world’s most famous pianist Glenn Gould (1932-82). The Three Cornered World was not only to become Gould’s favourite book, but also one that would obsess Gould for the last 15 years of his life. Gould subsequently bought every Soseki work that was available in English translation and had more works in his library by Soseki than by any other writer. Here is a hilarious tale of a young man, Botchan, from Tokyo, who moves to the countryside to become a math teacher. Soseki wrote this book in the early 1900s in response to the changing Japanese culture. Botchan represents the (cynical) “new” who clashes with a school staff who is stuck in their old ways of indirect demands, favors that come with an unspoken price, and rumors that shun unsuspecting people. Botchan’s frustrations with this mind set parallel a new generation, and this reminds us that even though we encounter “old ways of thinking” in Japan today, it has become a lot better than from Botchan’s time. 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Three Cornered World, Alan Turney’s award-winning translation of Kusamakura by Japan’s great literary maestro Natsume Soseki (1867-1916). Two years after it was published, the translation was read by the world’s most famous pianist Glenn Gould (1932-82).
The Three Cornered World was not only to become Gould’s favourite book, but also one that would obsess Gould for the last 15 years of his life. Gould subsequently bought every Soseki work that was available in English translation and had more works in his library by Soseki than by any other writer. He produced 37 pages of notes on The Three Cornered World and was preparing his own radio play based on the book before his untimely death intervened. Here is a hilarious tale of a young man, Botchan, from Tokyo, who moves to the countryside to become a math teacher. Soseki wrote this book in the early 1900s in response to the changing Japanese culture. Botchan represents the (cynical) “new” who clashes with a school staff who is stuck in their old ways of indirect demands, favors that come with an unspoken price, and rumors that shun unsuspecting people. Botchan’s frustrations with this mind set parallel a new generation, and this reminds us that even though we encounter “old ways of thinking” in Japan today, it has become a lot better than from Botchan’s time. Botchan’s conflicts with his students and staff are often told humorously. I still giggle when I eat Tempura (when you read, you will understand). This is not meant to be a serious novel, so read with a light heart, and pass it onto a person who is having trouble understanding Japan’s unspoken culture.

Botchan is the story of a young math teacher from Tokyo whose first assignment takes him to a middle school in the country side. His arrival there is not very lucky: The pupils are bound to test his perseverance and cheerily comment every one of his perceived missteps. In the teacher's room, he soon finds himself in the middle of an intrigue between the jovial "Porcupine" and the fat "Hubbard Squash" on one side, and the effeminate "Red Shirt" and his follower "Clown" on the other. Will Botchan choose the right side in the end? Botchan - with morality as the main theme - is one of the most popular novels in Japan. Sōseki Natsume bases the story on his own experiences as teacher in Matsuyama, his first assignment away from Tokyo. (Summary by Availle)

Rubin, Professor Emeritus of Harvard University, is author of Haruki Murakami and the Music of Words and Making Sense of Japanese: What Textbooks Don't Tell You. He is the major translator of Haruki Murakami, with 1Q84, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, After Dark, and others to his credit. His other translations include Rashomon and Seventeen Other Stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa and Sanshiro by Soseki Natsume.
One of the editors of Monkey Business, Roland Kelts is author of the best-selling Japanamerica, and his articles, essays, and stories have been published in The New Yorker, Time, Zoetrope, The Wall Street Journal, The Yomiuri, Japan Times, and many others. He has taught at a number of universities including New York University, Rutgers University, and the University of Tokyo.
Motoyuki Shibata teaches American literature and literary translation at the University of Tokyo. He is the co-editor of Monkey Business, the only English-language literary journal focused on Japanese literature, manga, and poetry. Among others, he has translated Paul Auster, Stuart Dybek, Kelly Link, Steven Millhauser, Richard Powers, Charles Simic, and Barry Yourgrau.

Rubin, Professor Emeritus of Harvard University, is author of Haruki Murakami and the Music of Words and Making Sense of Japanese: What Textbooks Don't Tell You. He is the major translator of Haruki Murakami, with 1Q84, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, After Dark, and others to his credit. His other translations include Rashomon and Seventeen Other Stories by Ryunosuke Akutagawa and Sanshiro by Soseki Natsume.
One of the editors of Monkey Business, Roland Kelts is author of the best-selling Japanamerica, and his articles, essays, and stories have been published in The New Yorker, Time, Zoetrope, The Wall Street Journal, The Yomiuri, Japan Times, and many others. He has taught at a number of universities including New York University, Rutgers University, and the University of Tokyo.
Motoyuki Shibata teaches American literature and literary translation at the University of Tokyo. He is the co-editor of Monkey Business, the only English-language literary journal focused on Japanese literature, manga, and poetry. Among others, he has translated Paul Auster, Stuart Dybek, Kelly Link, Steven Millhauser, Richard Powers, Charles Simic, and Barry Yourgrau.

I finally finished listening to Wagahaiwa neko de aru (I'm a cat) yesterday. I was surprised by what the author, Natsume Souseki, wrote about suicide in the last part of the novel. It was like a prediction of present-day Japan. Today, I'm going to translate some lines from the part of his story about suicide. Could you help me?
Dying is painful. However, it's more painful if you can't die. For people suffering from nervous breakdowns, living is much harder than death. They worry about death, but they don't worry about the fact that they will die. They worry about the best way to die. It's not a big problem for common people because they are usually unwise, so even if they do nothing special, society helpfully tortures them until they die. However, uncommon, twisted people aren't satisfied with that kind of natural death. After pondering the issue, they will come up with good and original ways to die. As a result, suicides will increase in the future, and those who kill themselves will do so in their own creative ways.
