Back in the day people took a lot of pride in photos that they took. Getting professional photographs taken was expensive and very time consuming so it's something that people took pretty seriously. They took it so seriously that the adults were willing to cover themselves in a cloth so that they could be certain that the children would hold still.

I was talking to a friend the other day and he told me about the “Hostess Conspiracy”.
A conspiracy… really?
Well, okay, maybe there isn’t a conspiracy and all of this is coincidental. Either way, its pretty interesting if you think about it.
Follow along, this is going to get interesting.
#10 Their name “Hostess” refers to a female, potentially a collage age female, who works at a restaurant.
#9 Ding Dongs. This is a family show, so I’ll spare you from any description as to why “ding dongs” may be a bit off color.
#8 Twinkies. Again, it doesn’t take much creativity to see why this name may be a bit off.
#7 Ho Ho’s. So there’s a company named “Hostess” and they sell treats called Ho Ho’s, Twinkies and Ding Dongs? Certainly something is amiss.. No? All coincidental?
#6 Glo Balls
#5 White Snow Balls
#4 Snow Balls even come in pink
#3 Zingers. The dictionary defines a “Zinger” as “a person or thing that has vitality”. Like a hostess…
#2 Suzy Qs. Suzy Q is a love song about a potentially beautiful young woman
#1 Honey Buns. Honey Buns is something that you may call someone that you love or it’s a name that you would give someone with a nice buttocks.
So what’s your opinion? Is it at all odd that there’s a company called “Hostess” that has products marketed to children that have names like Ding Dongs, Twinkies, Ho Ho’s and Glo Balls? Let us know in the comments below.

This was the most difficult video I've ever had to edit as I had to cut out so many great anecdotes, interesting facts and amazing products. Seriously, I think I could easily have made a 10 minute film for each decade!
Anyway here is a little glimpse of my visit to the house and collection of Madeleine Marsh. I tried to stay calm and focused but inside I was bursting to get my hands on all the amazing treasures that surrounded me! The second half of this video will feature the 1940's through to the 70's and some incredible items - Mary Quant crayons, the IT palette all the cool British girls aspired to own during the war and a powder compact in the shape of a grand piano... to name just a few! A century ago, 1.5 million British people worked as servants – astonishingly, more than worked in factories or farms. But while servants are often portrayed as characters in period dramas, the real stories of Britain’s servants have largely been forgotten. Presented by this documentary - herself the great-granddaughter of servants - this three-part series uncovers the reality of servants’ lives from the Victorian era through to the Second World War.
This documentary begins in the grand houses of the Victorian ruling elite – large country estates dependant on an army of staff toiling away below stairs. The Victorians ushered in a new ideal of servitude - where loyal, selfless servants were depersonalized stereotypes with standardised uniforms, hairstyles and even generic names denoting position.
In the immaculately preserved rooms of Erddig in North Wales, portraits of servants like loyal housekeeper Mrs Webster hint at an affectionate relationship between family and servants, but the reality for most was quite different. In other stately homes, hidden passages kept servants separate from the family - anonymity, invisibility and segregation were a crucial part of their gruelling job - and the strict servant hierarchy even kept them segregated from each other.
But it wasn’t just the aristocracy who had servants. The emerging middle classes were also hiring, and thousands – like manservant William Tayler - flocked from the countryside to take up positions in the cities’ townhouses. With no experience of keeping servants, however, how would these anxious new mistresses fair as managers – especially in the wake of a servant scandal? With a plethora of jobs available, the power was not always with the mistress, but also with the maids who were free to leave - and leave they did.

The Victorian era of British history was the period of Queen Victoria's reign from 20 June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901. It was a long period of peace, prosperity, refined sensibilities and national self-confidence for Britain. Some scholars date the beginning of the period in terms of sensibilities and political concerns to the passage of the Reform Act 1832.
The era was preceded by the Georgian period and succeeded by the Edwardian period. The latter half of the Victorian age roughly coincided with the first portion of the Belle Époque era of continental Europe and the Gilded Age of the United States.
Culturally there was a transition away from the rationalism of the Georgian period and toward romanticism and mysticism with regard to religion, social values, and the arts. The era is popularly associated with the values of social and sexual restraint.
In international relations the era was a long period of peace, known as the Pax Britannica, and economic, colonial, and industrial consolidation, temporarily disrupted by the Crimean War in 1854. The end of the period saw the Boer War. Domestically, the agenda was increasingly liberal with a number of shifts in the direction of gradual political reform, industrial reform and the widening of the voting franchise.

In other stately homes, hidden passages kept servants separate from the family - anonymity, invisibility and segregation were a crucial part of their gruelling job - and the strict servant hierarchy even kept them segregated from each other. But it wasn’t just the aristocracy who had servants. The emerging middle classes were also hiring, and thousands – like manservant William Tayler - flocked from the countryside to take up positions in the cities’ townhouses. With no experience of keeping servants, however, how would these anxious new mistresses fair as managers – especially in the wake of a servant scandal? With a plethora of jobs available, the power was not always with the mistress, but also with the maids who were free to leave - and leave they did. -

I was talking to a friend the other day and he told me about the “Hostess Conspiracy”.
A conspiracy… really?
Well, okay, maybe there isn’t a conspiracy and all of this is coincidental. Either way, its pretty interesting if you think about it.
Follow along, this is going to get interesting.
#10 Their name “Hostess” refers to a female, potentially a collage age female, who works at a restaurant.
#9 Ding Dongs. This is a family show, so I’ll spare you from any description as to why “ding dongs” may be a bit off color.
#8 Twinkies. Again, it doesn’t take much creativity to see why this name may be a bit off.
#7 Ho Ho’s. So there’s a company named “Hostess” and they sell treats called Ho Ho’s, Twinkies and Ding Dongs? Certainly something is amiss.. No? All coincidental?
#6 Glo Balls
#5 White Snow Balls
#4 Snow Balls even come in pink
#3 Zingers. The dictionary defines a “Zinger” as “a person or thing that has vitality”. Like a hostess…
#2 Suzy Qs. Suzy Q is a love song about a potentially beautiful young woman
#1 Honey Buns. Honey Buns is something that you may call someone that you love or it’s a name that you would give someone with a nice buttocks.

I was talking to a friend the other day and he told me about the “Hostess Conspiracy”.
A conspiracy… really?
Well, okay, maybe there isn’t a conspiracy and all of this is coincidental. Either way, its pretty interesting if you think about it.
Follow along, this is going to get interesting.
#10 Their name “Hostess” refers to a female, potentially a collage age female, who works at a restaurant.
#9 Ding Dongs. This is a family show, so I’ll spare you from any description as to why “ding dongs” may be a bit off color.
#8 Twinkies. Again, it doesn’t take much creativity to see why this name may be a bit off.
#7 Ho Ho’s. So there’s a company named “Hostess” and they sell treats called Ho Ho’s, Twinkies and Ding Dongs? Certainly something is amiss.. No? All coincidental?
#6 Glo Balls
#5 White Snow Balls
#4 Snow Balls even come in pink
#3 Zingers. The dictionary defines a “Zinger” as “a person or thing that has vitality”. Like a hostess…
#2 Suzy Qs. Suzy Q is a love song about a potentially beautiful young woman
#1 Honey Buns. Honey Buns is something that you may call someone that you love or it’s a name that you would give someone with a nice buttocks.

This was the most difficult video I've ever had to edit as I had to cut out so many great anecdotes, interesting facts and amazing products. Seriously, I think I could easily have made a 10 minute film for each decade!
Anyway here is a little glimpse of my visit to the house and collection of Madeleine Marsh. I tried to stay calm and focused but inside I was bursting to get my hands on all the amazing treasures that surrounded me! The second half of this video will feature the 1940's through to the 70's and some incredible items - Mary Quant crayons, the IT palette all the cool British girls aspired to own during the war and a powder compact in the shape of a grand piano... to name just a few! Stay tuned X

A century ago, 1.5 million British people worked as servants – astonishingly, more than worked in factories or farms. But while servants are often portrayed as characters in period dramas, the real stories of Britain’s servants have largely been forgotten. Presented by this documentary - herself the great-granddaughter of servants - this three-part series uncovers the reality of servants’ lives from the Victorian era through to the Second World War.
This documentary begins in the grand houses of the Victorian ruling elite – large country estates dependant on an army of staff toiling away below stairs. The Victorians ushered in a new ideal of servitude - where loyal, selfless servants were depersonalized stereotypes with standardised uniforms, hairstyles and even generic names denoting position.
In the immaculately preserved rooms of Erddig in North Wales, portraits of servants like loyal housekeeper Mrs Webster hint at an affectionate relationship between family and servants, but the reality for most was quite different. In other stately homes, hidden passages kept servants separate from the family - anonymity, invisibility and segregation were a crucial part of their gruelling job - and the strict servant hierarchy even kept them segregated from each other.
But it wasn’t just the aristocracy who had servants. The emerging middle classes were also hiring, and thousands – like manservant William Tayler - flocked from the countryside to take up positions in the cities’ townhouses. With no experience of keeping servants, however, how would these anxious new mistresses fair as managers – especially in the wake of a servant scandal? With a plethora of jobs available, the power was not always with the mistress, but also with the maids who were free to leave - and leave they did.
