For as long as time can remember people have lived within or on the edge of this land and still today there are many nomadic tribes in Algeria who call the Sahara home. Over 2.5 million people live within the borders of this desert and at times life can be hard. The Sahara is an arid land and some scientists believe it is the driest it has been in over 13,000 years. [...]Algeria is the largest country in Africa, the Arab world, and the Mediterranean Basin. Its southern part includes a significant portion of the Sahara. To the north, the Tell Atlas form with the Saharan Atlas, further south, two parallel sets of reliefs in approaching eastbound, and between which are inserted vast plains and highlands. Both Atlas tend to merge in eastern Algeria. The vast mountain ranges of Aures and Nememcha occupy the entire northeastern Algeria and are delineated by the Tunisian border. The highest point is Mount Tahat (3,003 m).

Take a tour of Monument of the Martyrs in Algeria -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The Monument of Martyrs is a towering emblem of Algiers' citizens who fought and died for freedom from French rule.
Its opening exhibition in 1982 observed the 20th anniversary of Algiers' independence.
Constructed as three standing palm leaves, the concrete edifice shelters the city's eternal flame.
Each palm leaf's base is guarded by a statue of an Algerian soldier to express the city's great struggle.
The monument stands over three hundred feet tall, making it one of Algiers' most notable landmarks
Algeria Travel Video Guide After a decade of conflict the situation improved slightly, and some access to the southern Sahara region has been possible in the last couple of years.
Algeria is one of the most fascinating countries in North Africa.Algeria Travel Video Guide in the dramatic Unesco-listed Tassili N'Ajjer and Hoggar regions, near the town of Tamanrasset, tribal culture is very much alive, and the day-to-day hassle common to many Arab countries is conspicuously absent. Algiers contains a vivid mix of tradition and modernism, its colonial past maintaining a presence. Timimoun embodies the storybook oasis town of the Sahara, and the welcoming town of In Salah is split in two by a creeping sand dune.

Morocco is a North African country that has a coastline on both the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It has borders with Western Sahara to the south, Algeria to the east and the Spanish North African territories of Ceuta and Melilla on the Mediterranean coast in the north. It is just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Gibraltar.
See in Morocco
==================
At just a few hours from the main European cities, Morocco has everything to overwhelm you with the amazing colors, smells and sounds of Islamic Africa. Imagine bustling souqs and spice markets, stunning mosques, white-washed sea side towns and medieval city centres. With panoramic views varying from snow-covered peaks in the High Atlas to the endless sand dunes of the Sahara, no-one ever has to be bored in this beautiful country.
Movie-famous Casablanca might be the most famous of Moroccan cities and is home to the huge Hassan II mosque, the second largest mosque in the world with only the Grand Mosque of Mecca surpassing it. Many travellers quickly leave this vibrant and modernist metropolis on a search for a more traditional Moroccan experience, but admiring the impressive colonial architecture, Hispano-Moorish and art-deco outlook of the city centre is actually time well spent. Marrakesh, known as the "Red City" and probably the most prominent former imperial capital, will leave you with memories to cherish for life. Spend your days wandering through the lively souqs, admiring the old gates and defensive walls, see the Saadian Tombs, the remnants of the El Badi Palace and visit the Koutoubia Mosque with its 12th century minaret. However, when evening falls make sure to head back to Jamaa el-Fnaa, the largest square in Africa, as it fills up with steam-producing food stalls. Indulge in the bustling activity there, listen to Arabic story tellers, watch magicians and Chleuh dancers. Fez, once Morocco's capital, is another gorgeous imperial city. Get lost in its lovely labyrinth of narrow Medieval streets, enjoy its huge medina, see the beautiful city gates, the ancient University of Al-Karaouine and the Bou Inania Madrasa. Also, make sure to visit a traditional leather tanning factory. The city of Meknes is often called the "Versailles of Morocco" for its beauty. Its lovely Spanish-Moorish style centre is surrounded by tall city walls with impressive gates and you'll be able to see the 17th century blend of European and Islamic cultures even today.
For a more laid-back experience of city life, catch a sea breeze at Asilah or lovely Essaouira. The blue-washed town of Chefchaouen is an old time travellers' favourite and a great starting point to explore the impressive High Atlas Mountains. Climb Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North-Africa, passing lovely adobe villages and exploring the gorgeous Ourika and Amizmiz valleys on the way. The stunning panoramic view from the top will make it worth every bit of your effort to get there. Other praised hiking routes lead through the beautiful Ameln Valley in the Anti-Atlas and the wooded Rif Mountains in the very north.
Hop on a camel back for a trip through the golden Sahara sand dunes at Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga. Spend the night in a desert tent, under the incredibly starred sky. The Sahara is also accessible near the town of Zagora; it's easier to get to from Marrakech but doesn't have the imposing dunes of Erg Chebbi. Somewhat less easy to reach but therefor also less crowded are the dunes of Erg Chigaga near M'hamid. On your way to the desert, make sure not to miss the stunning Todra gorge near Tinghir. The ancient fortified city of Aït-Benhaddou is another must-see sight. Although rainstorms damage the mud-brick kasbahs time and again, this mostly abandoned village remains an impressive sight and has been the decor for a range of movies, including Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator.

Hammams
========
There are two types of Hammam (steam baths) across Morocco.
The first is the tourist hammam, where you can go and be pampered and scrubbed by an experienced staff member. As these are promoted only to tourists they are the more expensive option with pricing usually around DH 150 for a hammam. They can not be technically referred to as a proper hammam, but they are nonetheless enjoyable, especially for the timid. Your hotel can recommend a good one.
The second option is to visit a "popular" Hammam. Popular hammams are the places where the locals go. Ask the staff at your hotel where they would go.

Travel Planet: Uncovering the Algerian Sahara (Desert) ultimate journey
With over 80% of its land occupied by the Sahara Desert, Algeria is a country for the true adventurer. The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world encompassing over 3.5 million square miles, which is roughly the size of the entire United States.
Most of the nomadic tribes search for an oasis; many have an underground aquifer that provides much needed water for these people and their livestock.
In Southeast Algeria is the national park, Tassili n'Ajjer. A large mountain chain, this park has a unique ecosystem because of its water holding capabilities. The vegetation is much fuller than the surrounding desert. In the eastern portion of the range, one can see endangered species of Saharan Cypress and Myrtle tree. Their existence dates to prehistoric times.
The amazing sites of this mountain range are the preserved rock paintings and archeological finds that are abundant in the area. There are over 30,000 depictions of various wildlife scenes that are date back to prehistoric times. Many fossil fields are in the area and for the lucky few; you may have the ability to assist on a dig.
Bring plenty of water, hire a guide, load the camera full of film, and book your trip early. The Sahara desert is a land of beauty, history, and adventure. For those who are willing the experience her charms, a lifetime of memories will be filled in this land of Algeria.
The Sahara (Arabic: الصحراء الكبرى, sa'hrāʾ al-Kubrā , 'the Great Desert') is the largest hot desert and third largest desert after Antarctica and the Arctic.Its combined surface area of 9,400,000 square kilometres (3,600,000 sq mi)—accounting for substrates such as the Libyan Desert and the Sudan region—is comparable to the respective land areas of China and the United States. The desert comprises much of the land found within North Africa, excluding the fertile coastal region situated against the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlas Mountains of the Mahgreb, and the Nile Valley of Egypt and Sudan. The Sahara stretches from the Red Sea in the east, girting the Mediterranean, to the Atlantic Ocean in the west, where the landscape gradually transitions to a coastal plain. To the south, it is delimited by the Sahel, a belt of semi-arid tropical savanna that comprises the northern region of central and western Sub-Saharan Africa.
Many of its sand dunes reach over 180 metres (590 ft) in height. Its name is derived from the plural Arabic language word for desert (صحارى ṣaḥārā [ˈsˤɑħɑːrɑː]).
The Algerian Desert (Arabic: الصحراء الجزائرية) is a located in north-central Africa and is part of the Sahara Desert. The desert occupies more than four-fifths of the Algerian territory. Its expansion starts from the Saharan Atlas, more or less as a stony desert and the farther inland you get the more of a sand dune desert it becomes. In the southwestern parts is the mountain range Tassili n'Ajjer located. This area is a subject of great archaeological interest and was put up on the "World Heritage List" by UNESCO in 1982. The area is known for extreme aridity and extreme heat, as daytime temperatures are commonly between 45 °C (113 °F) and 50 °C (122 °F) during the hottest period of the year in most of the desert. Cities and towns such as Ouargla, Touggourt, Beni Abbes, Adrar, In Salah are among the hottest places on the planet during the height of the summertime. Annual average rainfall is well below 100 mm (3,93 in) in the northernmost part but the center and the southern part receive much less than 50 mm (1,96 in) and are therefore hyper-arid and among the driest places on Earth.

VICE travels to West Africa to rummage through the messy remains of a country ravaged by 14 years of civil war. Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust.

Algeria Trip in 12 Minutes | Algeria Travel AAP1
The Sahara, the Ahaggar and the Atlas mountains compose the Algerian relief
Algeria lies mostly between latitudes 19° and 37°N (a small area is north of 37°), and longitudes 9°W and 12°E. Most of the coastal area is hilly, sometimes even mountainous, and there are a few natural harbours. The area from the coast to the Tell Atlas is fertile. South of the Tell Atlas is a steppe landscape ending with the Saharan Atlas; farther south, there is the Sahara desert.[63]
The Ahaggar Mountains (Arabic: جبال هقار), also known as the Hoggar, are a highland region in central Sahara, southern Algeria. They are located about 1,500 km (932 mi) south of the capital, Algiers, and just west of Tamanghasset. Algiers, Oran, Constantine, and Annaba are Algeria's main cities. Algeria's national airline, Air Algerie, says it has lost contact with one of its planes flying from Burkina Faso.
Contact was lost about 50 minutes after take-off from Ouagadougou, the airline is quoted by Algeria's state news agency as saying.
The passenger airliner, last seen at 0155 GMT, was bound for the Algerian capital Algiers, it added.
Flight AH 5017 had 110 passengers and six crew on board, officials said.
"In keeping with procedures, Air Algerie has launched its emergency plan," Air Algerie officials, quoted by APS news agency, said.
The plane is chartered from Spanish airline Swiftair.
In a statement (in Spanish), Swiftair said that the aircraft was an MD83 and that they were unable to establish contact with the plane. The plane was originally scheduled to land at 0510 local time, it said.
Flight AH 5017 flies the Ouagadougou-Algiers route four times a week, AFP news agency reported.

The monument stands over three hundred feet tall, making it one of Algiers' most notable landmarks.
A reminder of Algiers' victory, the soaring structure can be seen from anywhere in the city.

Algeria Travel Video Guide

==================

================
Hammams
========

Travel Planet: Uncovering the Algerian Sahara (Desert) ultimate journey
With over 80% of its land occupied by the Sahara Desert, Algeria is a country for the true adventurer. The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world encompassing over 3.5 million square miles, which is roughly the size of the entire United States.
