In Cusco, and the Sacred Valley, magnificent ruins await the adventurous traveler. The most famous of all is Machu Picchu.
Cusco is the former capital of the Inca Empire of the Sun. Since the 16th century, Spanish colonial buildings were built atop former Inca Palaces, of which only the foundations remain. Examples in the central Plaza de Armas are the Cusco Cathedral and La Compañia church. Another striking example is Qorikancha, the former golden courtyard of the Temple of the Sun. The Spanish used stones from Sacsayhuaman, an Inca stronghold overlooking the city.
In the Urubamba Valley, or Sacred Valley, visitors can see the mysterious Moray Terraces and the pre-Inca Salt Mines of Maras. Ollantaytambo is a living Inca city and its towering ruins form the start of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
The long-lost Inca bastion was uncovered from the jungle in 1911. It remains a mystery how the Incas managed to stack the heavy granite blocks that make up the city’s buildings so precisely, at high altitude.
Little is also known about how the Incas turned a multi-lingual tribal region in an empire that is now known as one of the greatest civilizations in history.

Travel video about destination Cuzco in Peru.
Today a proud symbol of the Conquistadores, the historic Spanish conquerors, towers over the town of Cuzco in Peru’s mountains. Prior to the arrival of the Spanish, Cuzco lay at the centre of the Inca world and was the capital and religious centre of an immense kingdom. The unique combination of Spanish and Inca culture is apparent in the attractive architecture of the town. Typical characteristics of the houses are the overhanging tiled roofs and beautiful old balconies. One of the town’s most extravagant colonial buildings, the Compañía De Jesús Church in the Plaza De Armas Square, was built on mighty Inca foundations. Some of Cuzco’s streets still display the impressive and sturdy architecture of the Inca people. Attractive houses line the former procession roads of the Inca that led from the main square, today’s Plaza De Armas, to the Sun Temple. Although historic, Cuzco is full of mystery and speculation with regard to its famous Inca predecessors.

Perú
Travel to a place where ancient Inca archaeological sites stand alongside dense Amazon jungles and spectacular Andes mountain ranges. Where condors soar effortlessly through the deepest canyons and traditional values are still firmly entrenched in everyday life. Peru has something to fascinate and captivate even the most experienced of travellers.
There are many different types of Peru holidays to choose from. Whether you want to travel independently with a backpack or join one of the many Peru tours to explore this mesmerising country, it's a place that will reward and amaze you at every turn.
Peru offers such diverse scenery and experiences that any Peru Travel Guide can only touch on the highlights of this spectacular country. Lose yourself in labyrinthine cities like Cusco, try foods you've never tried before, bar hop in the vibrant Miraflores neighbourhood of Lima and search for the best Pisco Sour in Peru.
Once you've booked your flights to Peru, let your imagination run wild and start planning what will be an adventure of a lifetime. Peru is a budget-friendly country and although spanning over 2,000-kilometres from the beach-side surfing village of Máncora on the Peruvian north coast, to the stunning Canyon del Colca in the south where magnificent Andean condors soar, it is still easy enough to travel via bus or plane.
Why not follow the path of the Incas and trek the challenging 4-day Inca Trail to the 'lost' city of Machu Picchu -- even more breathtaking in person than pictures depict? If hiking isn't for you, you can make your way to Aguas Calientes -- the town closest to Machu Picchu -- on a train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo. Explore the captivating city of Cusco and travel through the Sacred Valley.
Sail across Lake Titicaca, the highest lake in the world. Walk on the floating reed islands -- home of the Uros tribe or stay with a local family on an island near Puno. Head west and discover the mysterious Nazca Lines in the middle of the baking desert. Find your own oasis and go sand boarding or take a thrilling dune buggy ride on the mountainous sand dunes in Huacachina. See the stunning snow-covered mountain range Cordilleras Blanca and experience the rush of adventure in Huaraz.
While you could spend months exploring in this fascinating country, you can definitely experience and see many of Peru's treasures in a couple of weeks. So start planning your trip today!

Peru Travel Guide

Peru – a land of extremes and intrigue – principally known for being home to the most important archaeological site in all of the Americas, offers in reality so much more. Its landscapes range from high Andean peaks, to sultry Amazon rainforests, from high altitude deserts and wild windswept coasts. Of course its great to travel with the Incas from Cusco to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, but its also possible to get off the beaten track, to explore remote ruins of the cloud warriors in the north, or afro-Peruvian beats along the pacific coast. Most of all it’s a diverse country that offers something for everyone. But for many, a trip to Peru will begin in Cusco.
As the ancient Inca capital, and the political power base in colonial times, Cusco has its fair share of sites. Sitting in a narrow valley surrounded by pine-covered hills, it’s a stunning place with enough cathedrals, churches, museums, galleries, cafes and shops to keep the modern traveller entertained for a week. Of course with one of the world’s foremost tourist attractions lying just up the road, most of the time Cusco is busy with locals and travellers alike, but don’t let that put you off; like many other similar locations, Cusco is popular for a reason… it’s simply a beautiful place to hang out.
As the traditional thoroughfare between Cusco and Machu Picchu, the lush agricultural Sacred Valley is littered with impressive Inca ruins. Probably the most famous are the sites of Pisac – where the famous terraces rise over a thousand feet from the valley floor to the mountaintop – and at Ullataytambo. Here again the site overs a great insight into the life of the Inca nation and some great views of the Sacred Valley. There are also some pretty towns and villages to explore; you can hike, horse ride, mountain bike or even paraglide; and you can stay in some pretty special accommodation.
But of course most people travelling this way have one goal in mind, and that’s to reach the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Pichu. There are many ways to get to the sacred Inca site: you can trek along the Inca Trail, or walk staying at beautiful mountain lodges, or you can horse ride, pretty much all the way there. Wild Frontiers offers a horse riding trip through the region.
There are plenty of trains to take you to Machu Picchu, but this is the most special. The Hiram Bingham service, operated by the Belmond Orient Express, offers a great way to climb through the Andean foothills to Machu Picchu, presenting great views – either from your seat of the observation car – delicious dining and champagne! Alighting at Aguas Calientes, buses then take us the last part of the journey to the actual site itself.
Although the exact purpose and function of Machu Picchu is still a matter of conjecture, there’s no denying that for the Incas this awe-inspiring ancient city must have been a very important ceremonial site. The quality of the buildings, of the intricate terracing, and the lofty position of the citadel itself, all point towards a hugely important cultural centre. Interestingly, it was never revealed to the Spanish invaders, and was only discovered in the early 20th century when American historian, Hiram Bingham, chanced upon it while searching for the lost city of Vilcabamba. Today it undoubtedly forms the highlight for most peoples’ trips to Peru.
For many that is tourism in Peru; but not for us at Wild Frontiers. For us this vast country offers much more. For a start there is the beautiful Lake Titicaca to check out, a giant inland sea, peppered by idyllic rural islands. (Use images from Bolivia) There is the picturesque town of Araquipa, back-dropped by the stunning El Misti volcano, and access point to the spectacular Colca Canyon, where you are pretty much guaranteed to see the mighty Andean condor fly. There are the quite extraordinary Nazca lines to fly above and Peru is one of the best places to visit the Amazon rainforest, where you are likely to stumble upon all manner of exotic animals. And in the country’s rarely visited northern highlands were we run one of our most successful group tours to visit, among other places, the fortress of Kuelap, and the home of the ancient cloud warriors of Chachopyas, and the newly discovered Gocta Falls.
And lastly of course there are the Peruvians themselves, whose colourful culture dates back into the mists of time, and who are as hospitable and friendly as any on the continent.
(245 or 246) For most tourism to Peru will revolve around three places, Cusco, the Sacred Valley and here at Macchu Pichu. But my advice is to remember, as amazing as those places are there’s a lot more travelling in Peru than just that. Come and see for yourself.

The long lost, forgotten cities of South America always were there in people’s imagination. In Peru we can dream ourselves back into the empire of the Incas, into the age of the Sun God and the ruthless conquistadors. We can travel the 1000 year old Inca trail, travel through the Sacred Valley and take a walk in the amazing ruins of Machu Picchu. We can meet kechua and uro indians, we can buy their traditional clothing and listen to their songs and music. From an airplaine, we can try to solve the secret of the Nazca lines, we can take a train to the Altiplano, we can travel through the paradise of the Paracas Paninsula on boat, we can take a look at the monuments of Lima and Cuzco, and follow Thor Heyerdahl’s path, when we sit into a boat on the Titicaca lake.

Cuzco (also "Cusco", or "Qosqo" in Quechua), located in the Southern Sierras is a fascinating city that was the capital of the Inca Empire. Cuzco is a Unesco World Heritage Site and is one of Peru's most visited cities as it is the largest and most comfortable city from which tourists can begin visits to Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley of the Incas, and other Inca sites in the region.

==================
Museo Municipal de Arte Contemporáneo, located in the Municipal Palace at Plaza Regocijo. Has exhibitions of contemporary art. Admission with the boleto turistico
Museo Historico Regional, located in the home of the Inca historian Garcilaso de la Vega. Many paintings from the 17th and 18h century.
Museo del Centro de Textiles Tradicionales de Cusco, Av Sol. No. 603. A beautiful (and free) museum inside El Centro's textile store featuring a gallery containing displays of traditional Quechuan and Andean textiles. The museum explains the historical significance of textiles and the techniques by which they are made. A must-see, and visitors can buy the traditional textiles as they come in. A large majority of the money goes to the women who produce them, and the textiles are of much higher quality than the synthetic and machine-woven textiles found throughout the city.
Museo del Sitio del Qoricancha, Av Sol. With information about the different pre-Columbian cultures and fragments of ceramics and textiles of the Inca culture. A very small museum, the showcase room includes three mummies and skulls modified by the Incas with holes or sloped foreheads. Allow an hour to an hour and a half. English explanations are present but lacking.
Museo de Arte Popular, located in the basement of the OFEC office. Displays a collection of popular art.
Galleries; the stunning scenery of the Cuzco area are often very well depicted by local artists. It is possible to find cheap prints that are of surprisingly good quality if you're prepared to shop around.
Santa Catalina Convent, also a collection of religious art. Admission with the boleto turistico.

Sacsayhuaman is the ruins by the white Jesus. You need a boleto touristico to get in. A 10 day pass to all sites is 130 sol for foreigners. You can also get a single day pass to 4 sites (one of which is Sacsayhuamn) for 70 sol or if you are Peruvian, 40 sol.
The walls of the city are Inca, particularly near the Plaza de Armas.
Monumento Pachacuteq, down Av. Sol, is a statue of the Inca warrior King Pachacuteq. The statue is placed on a cylindrical base and the total monument is over 22 m high. The cylindrical base can be climbed, but views are disappointing because the monument is located at a lower part of town.

Saksaywaman is a walled complex on the northern outskirts of the city of Cusco, Peru, the former capital of the Inca Empire. Like many Inca constructions, the complex is made of large polished dry stone walls, with boulders carefully cut to fit together tightly without mortar.
The site, at an altitude of 3,701 m, was added as part of the city of Cusco to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.
Description Saksaywaman, Cusco
====================
Located on a steep hill that overlooks the city, it contains an impressive view of the valley to the southeast. Surface collections of pottery at Saksaywaman indicate that the earliest occupation of the hill top dates back at least a millennium.
Because of its location high above Cusco and its immense terrace walls, this area of Saksaywaman is frequently referred to as a fortress. The importance of its military functions was highlighted in 1536 when Manco Inca lay siege to Cusco. Much of the fighting occurred in and around Saksaywaman as it was critical for maintaining control over the city. It is clear from descriptions of the siege, as well as from excavations at the site, that there were towers on its summit as well as a series of other buildings. For example Pedro Sancho, who visited the complex before the siege, mentions the labyrinth-like quality of the complex and the fact that it held a great number of storage rooms filled with a wide variety of items. He also notes that there were buildings with large windows that looked over the city. These structures, like so much of the site, have long since been destroyed.
The large plaza area, capable of holding thousands of people, is well designed for ceremonial activities and several of the large structures at the site may also have been used during rituals. A similar relationship to that between Cuzco and Saksaywaman was replicated by the Incas in their distant colony of where Santiago, Chile now lies, with an Inca settlement that predated the city and the ritual site of Huaca de Chena It is also clear from early accounts that the complex held a great number of storage rooms. Pedro Pizarro described storage rooms that were within the complex and which were filled with military equipment.
The best-known zone of Saksaywaman includes its great plaza and its adjacent three massive terrace walls. The stones used in the construction of these terraces are among the largest used in any building in prehispanic America and display a precision of fitting that is unmatched in the Americas. The stones are so closely spaced that a single piece of paper will not fit between many of the stones. This precision, combined with the rounded corners of the blocks, the variety of their interlocking shapes, and the way the walls lean inward, is thought to have helped the ruins survive devastating earthquakes in Cuzco. The longest of three walls is about 400 meters. They are about 6 meters tall. The estimated volume of stone is over 6,000 cubic meters. Estimates for the weight of the largest Andesite block vary from 128 tonnes to almost 200 tonnes.
Following the siege of Cusco, the Spaniards began to use Saksaywaman as a source of stones for building Spanish Cuzco and within a few years much of the complex was demolished. The site was destroyed block-by-block to build the new governmental and religious buildings of the city, as well as the houses of the wealthiest Spaniards. In the words of Garcilaso de la Vega (1966:471 [1609: Part 1, Book. Bk. 7, Ch. 29]): "to save themselves the expense, effort and delay with which the Indians worked the stone, they pulled down all the smooth masonry in the walls. There is indeed not a house in the city that has not been made of this stone, or at least the houses built by the Spaniards." Today, only the stones that were too large to be easily moved remain at the site.
On 13 March 2008, archaeologists discovered additional ruins at the periphery of Saksaywaman. They are believed to have been built by the Killke culture, and while clearly ceremonial in nature, the exact function remains unknown. This culture built structures and occupied the site for hundreds of years before the Inca, between 900 and 1200 AD.
