In 2015, University College Cork celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Boole, first Professor of Mathematics at Queen’s College Cork, whose Boolean algebra laid the foundation of computer programming and computing technology. The impact of Boole’s research on the modern world cannot be overestimated.
Boole lived with his wife Mary and their five daughters in Ballintemple, and they attended services at St Michael’s Church in Blackrock, Cork. Tragically, he died at the age of 49 and Monday 8th December 2014 was the 150th anniversary of his death. A commemorative service of Choral Evensong took place in St Michael’s, where B

An unpublished 19th century recipe book and the letters of UCC’s first Professor of Maths, George Boole, show that Cork city’s food and dining customs at end of the Famine were far more complex that the stereotype of potatoes and little else according to Regina Sexton, food and culinary historian at UCC.
College or Cambridge pudding is just one of Mary Honner’s 30 recipes for sweet and savoury puddings. Regina Sexton has adapted the recipe to suit modern tastes (using butter instead of suet) and renamed it in honour of George Boole. http://bit.ly/1MmSfZZ

George Boole - Choral Evensong
In 2015, University College Cork celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Boole, first Professor of Mathematics at Queen’s College Cork, whose Boolean algebra laid the foundation of computer programming and computing technology. The impact of Boole’s research on the modern world cannot be overestimated.
Boole lived with his wife Mary and their five daughters in Ballintemple, and they attended services at St Michael’s Church in Blackrock, Cork. Tragically, he died at the age of 49 and Monday 8th December 2014 was the 150th anniversary of his death. A commemorative service of Choral Evensong took place in St Michael’s, where Boole was laid to rest. The service was led by Venerable Archdeacon Adrian Wilkinson, in the presence of leading members of the academic community from University College Cork and Cork Institute of Technology, church, civic and community leaders, and the families of the parish of St Michael’s. The sermon was preached by Reverend Canon Dr Mark Hocknull, Chancellor of Lincoln Cathedral, and member of the academic staff of the University of Lincoln, Boole’s home town until the age of 33 when he was appointed as Professor in Cork. Dr Hocknull’s talk centred on Boole’s deeply held religious beliefs and the nature of the relationship between science and religion, bringing a modern perspective to an age-old question.
The music for the Choral Evensong, provided by the highly acclaimed Clerks Choral, a Cork ensemble that traces its roots back to the 15th century, included works by William Byrd, church musician to the court of Queen Elizabeth I, who spent several years as Choir Master in Lincoln Cathedral.
In recognition of the place of Boole’s work in modern information technology, a child from the parish school was presented by Professor Barry O’Sullivan of University College Cork, co-Director of the Science Foundation Ireland Insight Centre for Data Analytics, with a credit card-sized computer, with the intention of promoting the teaching of basic computer science in schools. All children in the school are to receive one of these computers.
The Choral Evensong service was followed by a reception for invited guests in CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory.

This digital artwork consists of 140 Night Lights. It uses these as logical gates connected by light fibre.
The underlying concepts were first described by George Boole and they found the whole digital universe.
In that sense the installation describes how computers work.
I intend to build larger and more powerfull installations.

Saladin Said is currently Ethiopia's best footballer. The striker who plays for Egyptian club Wedi Degla FC in Cairo has been in lightning form recently for the Black Lions scoring all the goals in Ethiopia's 2-0 victory of the Central African Republic and in the 1-1 draw with South Africa.
Born in Asosa, he was exceptional as a youth player quickly gaining a key role in Ethiopia's youth team. He was signed by St George FC of Addis Ababa where he blossomed into the international striker we know him as today. At St George he won 2 Ethiopian Premier League titles as well as 2 Golden Boot awards for top scorer in the league including when he scored 21 goals in only 17 games in his first season.
He became a full international aged 19 and scored in a World cup qualifier against DR Congo.
In the 2010 Addis Ababa city cup final between St George and Dedebit, a riot erupted and Saladin ended up punching a referee and pushing an opponent. He and other brawl participants recieved a two year suspension from Ethiopian football.
In that year, he was trialed and played several matchs for Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade. But didn't sign on a permanent basis.
In June 2011, he sent a letter of apology to the EFF for his actions during the Addis Ababa city cup final. The EFF accepted it, and immediately Saladin was recalled to the national setup only days before the Black Lions African Qualifiying match against Nigeria.
On June 5th 2011, after about a year of competitive inactivity, he lined up against Nigeria, he scored both goals in Ethiopia's shocking 2-2 draw with a team loaded with English Italian and Spanish based stars.

Saladin rejoined St George in time for the 2011 East African Champions League. In one match against Ports FC, Champions of Djibouti, he scored 5 goals in St George's 7-0 victory.
Scouts all over Africa were a buzz about Saladin then. Dedebit were said to be preparing a sensationsl 1 million birr transfer of Saladin.
In October 2011, he transfered to Egyptian club Wadi Degla, for 240,000$ (over 2 million birr). It is the biggest transfer of an Ethiopian football player ever.
He is rumoured to be on the move once more as more clubs are on the lookout for Ethiopia's best finisher. He states that Kaizer Chiefs and Suspersport United (former club of fellow Ethiopian international Fikru Tefera) have contacted his agent.
After his second goal against Central African Republic, he tore his hamstring and was unavailable for Ethiopia's 1-1 draw with Benin. Currently out of action for the next few weeks.

This digital artwork consists of 140 Night Lights. It uses these as logical gates connected by light fibre.
The underlying concepts were first described by George Boole and they found the whole digital universe.
In that sense the installation describes how computers work.
I intend to build larger and more powerfull installations.
There will be also educational videos.

The music begins with violins, flute and piano, typical instruments of Boole’s era, the Romantic period. It incorporates a quote from Boole about the growth and passing on of information, narrated by Dr. Charles Marks (Neurosurgeon).
The music expands as the rest of the string orchestra joins in (1:20), symbolizing Boole’s exploration in mathematics. It becomes polyphonic representing the different equations coming together to form his eventual Boolean algebra. His ‘eureka’ moment comes at 2:26 when “Boole’s Theme” is played in full for the first time. This ends abruptly at 3:08 reflecting his sudden death from pneumonia at age 49.
From this point, the piece continues with less activity and more space to show that his logic remained dormant for many years after his death, without application.
At 4:00 soft, electronic sounds are introduced, and the theme is heard again in a quieter variation as a reminder that Boolean logic will soon be used to enable our ‘futuristic’ age.

By the time he hit puberty, the adolescent George was fluent in German, Italian and French. At 16 he became an assistant teacher, at 20 he opened his own school.

George Boole merupakan pencetus logika matematika modern. Dialah yang memperkenalkan ide aljabar biner yang kini banyak digunakan dalam desain sirkuit computer dan perancangan sakelar on/off.
George Boole dilahirkan di Lincoln, Inggris pada tanggal 2 November 1815. Beliau berasal dari keluarga miskin. Kepandaian Boole sudah tampak sejak berusia 12 tahun. Pada saat itu, dia sudah berhasil menerjemahkan sebuah syair dari bahasa latin. Hasil terjemahan itu dikirimkan ke surat kabar setempat. Ketika dimuat, banyak orang tidak percaya bahwa yang menerjemahkan syair itu adalah seorang anak yang berumur 12 tahun. George Boole.
Ayah Boole adalah seseorang yang tertarik pada matematika. Oleh karena itu, ia pun mengiginkan agar anaknya menjadi seperti dirinya kelak. Boole berkerja sambilan menjadi asisten guru pada usia 16 tahun untuk membantu ekonomi keluarganya.
Boole mendirikan sebuah Sekolah Dasar dengan tujuan khusus untuk mempersipkan murid-muridnya menjadi matematikawan. Saat membuka sekolah itulah, Boole menyadari bahwa buku pegangan yang digunakanoleh siswa saat itu bukan buku matematika yang layak. Dia lalu kembali membuka buku matematika klasik yang ditulis pada abad ke-17 dan abad ke-18. Kemudian Boole terpengaruh oleh pemikiran-pemikiran Isaac Newton Pierre Laplace.
Karya pertama Boole yang berhubungan dengan logika matematika adalah The Mhatematical Analysis Of Logic. Buku ini diterbitkan pada tahun 1847. Selanjutnya, kembali menulis buku tentang logika pada tahun 1854, yaitu An Investigation Of Thought. Kelebihan pemikiran Boole ini adalah dia mampu merumuskan hubungan yang terdapat di dalam logika matematika menjadi symbol-simbol yang sangat sederhana. Hasil pemikiran Boole ini kelak dikenal dengan nama Aljabar Boolean.
Sebagian dari karya Boole memang langsung berpengaruh pada saat itu. Akan tetapi, sebagian lainnya tidak. Misalnya, Boole sempat menulis dua buku teks matematika, yaitu Treatise on Differential Equation pada tahun 1859 danTreatise on The Calculusof Finite Difference padatahun 1860. Kedua buku ini baru dijadkan rujukan pengajaran di universitas-universitas beberapa decade setelah kematiannya.
Boole menerima penghargaan dari Universitas Dublin dan Oxford. Dia pun menjadi anggota kehormatan di Royal Irish Academy dan Royal Society of London. In 1854 George Boole published The Laws of Thought, and established Boolean algebra. Less well known is that half of this book was devoted to probabilistic inference. Boole dreamed of a "general method in probabilities": an algorithm which given probabilities of any system of events, could determine the consequent probability of any other logically connected event. Like Boole, Alan Turing laid down the fundamentals of computer science, and also turned his attention to automated reasoning. Turing presented the "imitation game" (now, the Turing Test) - a task which could only be passed by a machine which understood the world with all its ambiguities, uncertainty and complexities; i.e., a machine with common-sense.
In this talk I present probabilistic programming as the modern realisation of Boole's general method, and a significant step towards Turing's thinking machine. I will introduce Sigma, a language in which probabilistic models are functional programs. Sigma programs can be run forward, to for example render a 3D scene (known only with uncertainty) to a 2D image. More interestingly, Sigma's inference algorithms can run functions conditionally, or in reverse; so that the most probable 3D scene can be automatically inferred from a 2D image. Through examples, I shall explain how this is possible through the combination of functional programming and methods from statistical inference, program analysis and constraint solving. And, if successful, how probabilistic programming will unify several ideas in logic, artificial intelligence and cognitive science.
