French Version of Aladdin & His Magic Lamp( Part 1)
There were apparently no more French-language animated features besides Belvision’s up to 1970. During the 1970s, French animation exploded so much that this column covers the theatrical features from 1971 to 1975 only. Aladdin & His Magic Lamp (1970) is a feature-length adaptation of the Aladdin story directed by pioneering French animator Jean Image who, in 1950, directed France's first animated feature, JEANNOT L'INTREPIDE (aka JOHNNY THE GIANT KILLER). This is a weaker, lower-budgeted film than JEANNOT, but it's still an interesting cartoon version of the famous Arabian Nights tale. Paramount Picture, who picked up the American rights for the film, released it on July 1, 1975. It was Image's second and final film to receive a U.S. release.

There were apparently no more French-language animated features besides Belvision’s up to 1970. This is a weaker, lower-budgeted film than JEANNOT, but it's still an interesting cartoon version of the famous Arabian Nights tale. Paramount Picture, who picked up the American rights for the film, released it on July 1, 1975. It was Image's second and final film to receive a U.S. release.
The story of Aladdin and his magic lamp is one of the most famous of all the Arabian
Nights stories. Aladdin who discovers a lamp that brings him great wealth. The magician will stop at nothing to gain possession of a young boy's lamp and the genie that lives within it.
Evil magician from Egypt attempts to get his hands on an incredible magic lamp. He leaves the boy trapped in a cave with the lamp. The boy figures out what makes it magical. But he still isn't happy because he is in love with the Sultan's daughter, who has been taken to Egypt by an evil magician.
This film introduces some new characters, including a talking parrot and a clockwork camel.
This film stays true to the original "Arabian Nights" tale, beautifully animated and with a musical wonderful soundtrack.
The standard Arabian Nights tale. An evil Egyptian Magician learns from his crystal ball of a magic lamp inhabited by a genie who will grant all wishes, hidden in a cave in a village near China; but it can only be retrieved by an innocent youth. The Magician travels to the China, pretends to be Aladdin’s long-lost uncle who will make him his heir, and leads Aladdin to the hidden cave. He gives Aladdin a magic ring to let him enter the cave and get the lamp. Aladdin does, but he does not trust the Magician and refuses to give him the lamp, before he leaves the cave. The magician traps Aladdin inside, still holding the lamp. The Magician, furious, seals the cave and leaves to find another youth after Aladdin has starved to death. After two days miserable and alone, Aladdin accidentally rubs the ring the magician gave him, and a jinn appears. The jinn asks what Aladdin wants, and the boy asks to be brought home. The spirit complies.
Back home, Aladdin's mother attempts to clean the lamp so they can sell it. When she rubs it, an even more powerful jinn appears, promising to do their bidding. They request something to eat, and the lamp jinn brings them an amazing feast.
Aladdin quickly become a wealthy youth. They live in prosperity for years in this way, until one day Aladdin catches sight of the princess and decides he must marry her. He sends his mother to the sultan's palace with some jewels conjured by the lamp jinn, to impress the sultan into approving the marriage with the princess. Amazed by the display of wealth, the sultan agrees and Aladdin marry to the Sultan’s beautiful daughter, Badroulboudour.
Just when it seems that Aladdin will live happily ever after, the Magician returns, guesses that Aladdin must have learned the secret of the lamp, and plots to steal the lamp from him.
It is set in China, and Aladdin is Chinese; however, most of the people in the story are Muslims, and everyone has an Arabic name. It is possible that the storyteller knew little of China when writing this story, and therefore assumed it to be more Muslim than it actually was, but this is unclear. The strange, exotic setting could have been deliberate, to evoke a more distant, mystical land for its original listeners.
