What is it?
AIDS, or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, is an infection caused by the sexually transmitted HIV virus, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus. AIDS severely damages the immune system, putting its victims at huge risk for opportunistic infections. Today, there are over 35 million people living with HIV/AIDS, over 3 million of which are children who were infected by their mothers at birth.
Where is it located?
HIV/AIDS is a worldwide pandemic. As seen here, sub-Saharan Africa is the most heavily affected region where it's infected 5% of the adult population and has caused 10% of deaths in children. The second most affected region is Southeast Asia followed by Eastern European countries such as Russia, Ukraine, and Latvia.
How will it kill you?
Infection with HIV does not always progress to AIDS and thanks to advances in medicine and technology, HIV positive victims may now lead nearly normal life expectancies. But those whose infections have progressed to AIDS will suffer from a progressive failure of the immune system due to lowered white blood cell counts. Death is mainly caused by an inability to fight off opportunistic infections from other diseases, the leading causes being tuberculosis, hepatitis C, and cancer.
How to survive:
Although there's still no cure, HIV patients starting treatment far in advance can lead close to normal life expectancies. If you suspect yourself of being infected, get an HIV AIDS test done immediately, Both HIV and AIDS patients may take antiretroviral medicines to fight the virus. These antiretroviral meds improve their healths by making their immune systems work better. Problems arise when the virus becomes resistant to the antiretrovirals, at which point new medicines can be prescribed to help fight the disease, prevent HIV replication, and shorten the HIV life cycle .

Dr. Yusuf Hamied thinks the Indian government should put the country "on a war footing" to tackle the HIV/AIDS epidemic that threatens to decimate his country. As evidence, he cites the three and a half thousand new HIV/AIDS cases registered every day in India - and the forecasts of 35 million HIV-infected Indians by 2003. But there's another battle still being fought over the way deal with the pandemic in developing countries like India: the battle over who owns the patents on the anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs) now known to prolong the lives, and minimise the suffering, of HIV sufferers the world over - where they can afford them. As the founder of the Indian drugs company, Cipla, it's an argument Dr.Hamied is only too familiar with. Cipla produces generic copies of ARVs whose patents officially belong to pharmaceutical giants like Bristol Myers Squibb and GlaxoSmithKline. It was Dr.Hamied who offered to supply these generic drugs to HIV patients in South Africa in 2000 - at a cost of just US$350 per patient per annum, instead of the US$1,500 - US$2,000 the pharmaceutical companies were charging, forcing the companies themselves into a shame-faced retreat over their pricing. But access to ARV drugs isn't the panacea Hamied wants it to be, argues Dr. Jan Raaijmakers of GlaxoSmithKline in the Netherlands. Without a proper health infrastructure to monitor patients and make sure they take all ARV prescriptions correctly, India faces the real risk of drug-resistant HIV, which will lead to just more deaths and misery. Dr. Yusuf Hamied thinks the Indian government should put the country "on a war footing" to tackle the HIV/AIDS epidemic that threatens to decimate his country. As evidence, he cites the three and a half thousand new HIV/AIDS cases registered every day in India - and the forecasts of 35 million HIV-infected Indians by 2003. But there's another battle still being fought over the way deal with the pandemic in developing countries like India: the battle over who owns the patents on the anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs) now known to prolong the lives, and minimise the suffering, of HIV sufferers the world over - where they can afford them. As the founder of the Indian drugs company, Cipla, it's an argument Dr.Hamied is only too familiar with. Cipla produces generic copies of ARVs whose patents officially belong to pharmaceutical giants like Bristol Myers Squibb and GlaxoSmithKline. It was Dr.Hamied who offered to supply these generic drugs to HIV patients in South Africa in 2000 - at a cost of just US$350 per patient per annum, instead of the US$1,500 - US$2,000 the pharmaceutical companies were charging, forcing the companies themselves into a shame-faced retreat over their pricing. But access to ARV drugs isn't the panacea Hamied wants it to be, argues Dr. Jan Raaijmakers of GlaxoSmithKline in the Netherlands. Without a proper health infrastructure to monitor patients and make sure they take all ARV prescriptions correctly, India faces the real risk of drug-resistant HIV, which will lead to just more deaths and misery. Balloon Pill Aids Obese Patients With Weight Loss
A new study has found that a balloon pill that inflates in the stomach, causing the sensation of fullness, has been effective in treating obese patients. Through a catheter the capsule inflated with gas inside the stomach. As many as three balloons were placed over three months, and all of the balloons were removed after six months. The study lasted a year, and researchers found that, on average, patients who used the balloon capsules lost 15 more pounds than those who just followed diet and exercise regimens. A new study has found that a balloon pill that inflates in the stomach, causing the sensation of fullness, has been effective in treating obese patients.
Through a catheter the capsule inflated with gas inside the stomach. As many as three balloons were placed over three months, and all of the balloons were removed after six months.
The study lasted a year, and researchers found that, on average, patients who used the balloon capsules lost 15 more pounds than those who just followed diet and exercise regimens.
The lead researcher said the capsules worked over the course of a year, but insisted, "The long-term results are dependent on patients keeping their motivation to stay with their diet and exercise programs."

Mary Fisher (born April 6, 1948) is an American political activist, artist and author. After contracting HIV from her second husband, she has become an outspoken HIV/AIDS activist for the prevention, education and for the compassionate treatment of people with HIV and AIDS. She is particularly noted for speeches before two Republican Conventions: Houston in 1992 and San Diego in 1996. The 1992 speech has been hailed as "one of the best American speeches of the 20th Century." She is founder of a non-profit organization to fund HIV/AIDS research and education, the Mary Fisher Clinical AIDS Research and Education (CARE) Fund. Fisher decided to be open about her illness, and after the Detroit Free Press published her story in February 1992, she was invited to speak at the 1992 Republican National Convention in Houston, Texas.[4] There, she urged the Republican Party to handle the AIDS crisis and the HIV positive with compassion.[9] In 1995, The New York Times credited Fisher – along with Elizabeth Glaser, who spoke on her experience with AIDS at the 1992 Democratic National Convention – with having "brought AIDS home to America."[10] After that appearance, Fisher created a support group for families affected by AIDS and healthcare workers, the Family AIDS Network, and continued speaking as its representative, promoting education, prevention and acceptance of sufferers.[4][10] In October 1992, President George Bush appointed her to the National Commission on AIDS to replace Magic Johnson.[11] Fisher spoke again at the 1996 Republican National Convention in San Diego, California.[12] Fisher did not return for the 2000 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; she was replaced by fellow AIDS activist (and "abstinence-only" proponent) Patricia Funderburk Ware.[13]
In 1999, Fisher made news when she, like some other HIV-positive people, decided to stop taking anti-HIV medications which she felt were hurting her quality of life.[14][15]
But she and her doctors continued to try new drug combinations and, by 2001, were able to suppress the virus without unmanageable side effects. Finding medications that could prolong healthy life marked a turning point, Fisher said in a 2007 More magazine interview: "For years it was waiting to die, and then it was turning everything around and trying to figure out how to live."[16]
Fisher expanded her AIDS activism from public speaking into writing, art and international advocacy. She founded the non-profit Mary Fisher CARE Fund, based at the Center for AIDS Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, to support clinical AIDS research and promote public education about HIV/AIDS medicine and policy. She serves on the leadership council of the 'Global Coalition on Women and AIDS and with other HIV-positive women has toured the United States to raise awareness about the disease.
Fisher’s international work has focused on Africa and especially Zambia, where she has led fact-finding tours and has promoted income-generation projects to employ HIV-positive women.[17] She has taught African women to create handmade jewelry which is then sold online and in U.S. galleries, with profits returned to the women artisans.
Fisher’s art has been exhibited in public and private collections around the world. Collectors include: President and Mrs. George H. W. Bush, President and Mrs. Gerald Ford, Mrs. Henry Ford II, President and Mrs. Mwanawasa of Zambia, and many others. Seven of her sculptures are displayed at the Geneva, Switzerland, headquarters of UNAIDS, as part of Art for AIDS, a collection created to recognize the role art has played in the response to AIDS. Fisher’s work also has been shown at the [2]. Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
Fisher is represented year round by Goldenstein Gallery ([3]) Uptown Sedona, Arizona. A special show featuring her work is held annually in November. The show is titled: CHI: Art as a Healing Medium. The opening reception is held the first Friday in November. Fisher speaks in the gallery at least once a year.
She is active with the Sedona Visual Artists Coalition.

Bush, President and Mrs. Gerald Ford, Mrs. Henry Ford II, President and Mrs. Mwanawasa of Zambia, and many others. Seven of her sculptures are displayed at the Geneva, Switzerland, headquarters of UNAIDS, as part of Art for AIDS, a collection created to recognize the role art has played in the response to AIDS. Fisher’s work also has been shown at the [2]. Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
Fisher is represented year round by Goldenstein Gallery ([3]) Uptown Sedona, Arizona. A special show featuring her work is held annually in November. The show is titled: CHI: Art as a Healing Medium. The opening reception is held the first Friday in November. Fisher speaks in the gallery at least once a year.
She is active with the Sedona Visual Artists Coalition.
