Women in ancient warfare
The role of women in ancient warfare differed from culture to culture. Warfare throughout written history mainly has been portrayed in modern times as a matter for men, but women also have played a role. Until very recently, little mention of these exploits was included in retellings of history in most countries, aside from the Amazons.
Female deities, whose origins predate historical records, are present in most early cultures. Often they were portrayed as warriors, which signals a pervasive presence of women among such activities prior to a profound change in many human cultures after the adoption of agriculture as the typical sustenance (and which enabled protracted warfare with large armies).
Their influences, the roles of women rulers, and those of significant women, were retained in many of these cultures so strongly that no layers of new legends, ideals, and myths were able to obscure them completely.
The following is a list of prominent women who participated in warfare, which was assembled from the fragmentary beginning of written records to approximately 500 AD. Archaeological research provides more details and clues regularly.

Ancient warfare
Ancient warfare is war as conducted from the beginnings of recorded history to the end of the ancient period. In Europe and the Near East, the end of antiquity is often equated with the Fall of Rome in 476, the wars of the Eastern Roman Empire on its Southwestern Asian and North African borders, and the beginnings of the Muslim conquests in the 7th century. In China, it can also be seen as ending with the growing role of mounted warriors needed to counter the ever-growing threat from the north in the 5th century and the beginning of the Tang Dynasty in 618. In India, the ancient period ends with the decline of the Gupta Empire (6th century) and the beginning of the Muslim conquests there from the 8th century. In Japan, the ancient period can be taken to end with the rise of feudalism in the Kamakura period in the 12-13th century.
The difference between prehistoric and ancient warfare is less one of technology than of organization. The development of first city-states, and then empires, allowed warfare to change dramatically. Beginning in Mesopotamia, states produced sufficient agricultural surplus so that full-time ruling elites and military commanders could emerge. While the bulk of military forces were still farmers, the society could support having them campaigning rather than working the land for a portion of each year. Thus, organized armies developed for the first time.

By the way, I am told Ramone died in a major offensive by the government while this movie
was in post production, along with a few others they show. I believe my one-eyed
El Salvadoran friend when he tells me he fought alongside Ramone and shared many battles.

I make no apologies for the quality of the video. That said, the color is somewhat faded
as though its a VHS of a broadcast. The audio is great though, makes you think Apocolypse Now,
when you hear Martin Sheen start into his narration.
By the way, I am told Ramone died in a major offensive by the government while this movie
was in post production, along with a few others they show. I believe my one-eyed
El Salvadoran friend when he tells me he fought alongside Ramone and shared many battles.

The Indus Valley Civilization, which spread and flourished in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent from c. 3300 to 1300 BCE in present-day Pakistan and northwest India, was the first major civilization in South Asia.[2] A sophisticated and technologically advanced urban culture developed in the Mature Harappan period, from 2600 to 1900 BCE.[3] This civilization collapsed at the start of the second millennium BCE and was later followed by the Iron Age Vedic Civilization, which extended over much of the Indo-Gangetic plain and which witness the rise of major polities known as the Mahajanapadas. In one of these kingdoms, Magadha, Mahavira and Gautama Buddha propagated their Shramanic philosophies during the fifth and sixth century BCE.
Most of the subcontinent was conquered by the Maurya Empire during the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE. From the 3rd century BC onwards Prakrit and Pali literature in the north and the Sangam literature in southern India started to flourish.[4][5] The famous Wootz steel originated in south India in the 3rd century BC and was also exported to foreign countries.[6][7][8]
Various parts of India were ruled by numerous Middle kingdoms for the next 1,500 years, among which the Gupta Empire stand out. This period, witnessing a Hindu religious and intellectual resurgence, is known as the classical or "Golden Age of India". During this period, aspects of Indian civilization, administration, culture, and religion (Hinduism and Buddhism) spread to much of Asia, while kingdoms in southern India had maritime business links with the Roman Empire from around 77 CE. During this period Indian cultural influence spread over many parts of Southeast Asia which led to the establishment of Indianized kingdoms in Southeast Asia (Greater India).

This Documentary shows the history of World War II operations in the Pacific, from the fall of Corregidor to Japanese surrender ceremonies in Tokyo Bay. The film concentrates on the Allied campaign against the Japanese in the Philippines of 1944-1945. The video contains captured Japanese films as well.
The Pacific War
The Pacific War, sometimes called the Asia-Pacific War, was the Pacific theatre of World War II, which was fought in the Pacific Ocean, its islands, and in East Asia. It includes the Pacific Ocean theatre, the South West Pacific theatre, the South-East Asian theatre, and the Second Sino-Japanese War (including the 1945 Soviet-Japanese conflict).
It is generally considered the Pacific War began on 7/8 December 1941 with the invasion of Thailand for the invasion of British Malaya, and the attack on Pearl Harbor in the United States' Territory of Hawaii by the Empire of Japan. Some authors consider that the conflict in Asia dates back to 7 July 1937, beginning with the Second Sino-Japanese War between the Empire of Japan and the Republic of China, or possibly 19 September 1931, beginning with the Japanese invasion of Manchuria.
The Pacific War saw the Allied powers pitted against the Empire of Japan, the latter briefly aided by Thailand and to a much lesser extent by its Axis allies, Germany and Italy. The war culminated in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and other large aerial bombing attacks by the United States Army Air Forces, accompanied by the Soviet invasion of Manchuria on 8 August 1945, resulting in the surrender of Japan and the end of fighting during World War II on 15 August 1945. The formal and official surrender of Japan occurred aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945.
Japanese Threat to Australia
In late 1941, as Japan struck at Pearl Harbor, most of Australia's best forces were committed to the fight against Hitler in the Mediterranean Theatre. Australia was ill-prepared for an attack. While still calling for reinforcements from Churchill, the Australian Prime Minister John Curtin called for American support on 27 December 1941.
Australia had been shocked by the speedy collapse of British Malaya and Fall of Singapore in which around 15,000 Australian soldiers became prisoners of war. Curtin predicted that the "battle for Australia" would now follow. The Japanese established a major base in the Australian Territory of New Guinea in early 1942. On 19 February, Darwin suffered a devastating air raid, the first time the Australian mainland had been attacked.
U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt ordered his commander in the Philippines, General Douglas MacArthur, to formulate a Pacific defence plan with Australia in March 1942. The Philippines Campaign of 1941--1942 or the Battle of the Philippines 1941--1942 was the invasion of the Philippines by Japan in 1941--1942 and the defense of the islands by Filipino and United States forces.
The defending forces outnumbered the Japanese invaders by 3 to 2, but were a mixed force of non-combat experienced regular and newly created units; the Japanese used their best first-line troops at the outset of the campaign. The Japanese 14th swiftly overrun most of Luzon.
The Japanese high command, believing they had won the campaign, made a strategic decision to advance by a month their timetable of operations in Borneo and Indonesia, withdrawing their best division and the bulk of their airpower in early January 1942. The Salvadoran Civil War (1980--1992) was a conflict in El Salvador between the military-led government of El Salvador backed by the United States government, and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), a coalition or 'umbrella organization' of five left-wing guerrilla groups. Significant tensions and violence already existed in the 1970s, before the full-fledged official outbreak of the civil war—which lasted for twelve years. El Salvador's Civil War was the second longest civil war in Latin America after the Guatemalan Civil War.
The conflict ended in the early 1990s. An unknown number of people disappeared, and more than 75,000 were killed.
At war's end, the Commission on the Truth for El Salvador registered more than 22,000 complaints of political violence in El Salvador, between January 1980 and July 1991, 60 percent about summary killing, 25 percent about kidnapping, and 20 percent about torture. These complaints attributed almost 85 percent of the violence to State agents, private paramilitary groups, and the death squads. The Salvadoran armed forces were accused in 60 per cent of the complaints, the security forces in 25 percent, military escorts and civil defense units in 20 percent of complaints, the death squads in more than 10 percent, and the FMLN in 5 percent. The Truth Commission could collect only a significant sample of the full number of potential complaints, having had only three months to collect it.
The retrospective assessments of human rights organizations and truth commissions document and reiterate that most violence was committed by the National Guard and other military bodies. Amnesty International's 1985 annual report likewise stated that that many of the 70,000 people killed in the preceding five years had been murdered by government forces, who openly dumped the mutilated corpses, in an apparent effort to terrorize the population. More than 70,000 people were killed, many in the course of gross violation of their human rights. More than 25 per cent of the populace was displaced as refugees before the civil warriors signed a U.N. peace treaty in 1992.
Despite mostly killing peasants, the Government readily killed any opponent they suspected of sympathy with the guerrillas — clergy (men and women), church lay workers, political activists, journalists, labor unionists (leaders, rank-and-file), medical workers, liberal students and teachers, and human-rights monitors. The State's terrorism was effected by the security forces, the Army, the National Guard, and the Treasury Police; yet it was the paramilitary death squads who gave the Government plausible deniability of, and accountability for, the political killings. Typically, a death squad dressed in civilian clothes and traveled in anonymous vehicles (dark windows, blank license plates). Their terrorism comprised publishing future-victim death lists, delivering coffins to said future victims, and sending the target-person an invitation to his/her own funeral. Cynthia Arnson, a Latin American-affairs writer for Human Rights Watch, says: the objective of death-squad-terror seemed not only to eliminate opponents, but also, through torture and the gruesome disfigurement of bodies, to terrorize the population. In the mid-1980s, state terror against Salvadorans became open — indiscriminate bombing from military airplanes, planted mines, and the harassment of national and international medical personnel; all indicate that, although death rates attributable to the death squads have declined in El Salvador since 1983, non-combatant victims of the civil war have increased dramatically.
In addition, the FMLN continuously violated the human rights of many Salvadorans and other individuals identified as right-wing supporters, military targets, pro-government politicians, intellectuals, public officials, and judges. These violations included kidnapping, bombings, rape, and killing.

China: Mandate from Heaven
One thousand years ago, roads from the West to China crossed the terrible Takla Makan desert. Its name meant: "He who enters will never return. ..."
Along its edges, the Silk Road carried merchants from India and the Middle East, their saddle bags bulging with spices, jewels, carpets and silk.
The gateway to China was the oasis of Tun-huang. Here, hollowed into the desert cliffs, was a Buddhist monastery endowed with fabulous treasures donated by passing merchants.
Each of the 450 caves was a shrine decorated by monks. On the ceilings and walls, they painted the world of China. The Chinese believed their land was the center of the world, and that their emperor held a mandate from heaven to rule all the peoples of the Earth.

Islam was young and vigorous in the 11th century. Starting from its cradle in Arabia, Islam had spread from India to Spain. Across 4,000 miles, Muslim travelers passed through a single world, united by mosques and the call to prayer.
Muslim manpower was renewed by the nomadic tribes of the Sahara and central Asia. Their cavalry became the vanguard of holy war. Where the sword went, trade followed. Islam taught that to barter is to be pious, and Muslim merchants were the world's middlemen. Every deal was a chance to exchange ideas.

At the start of the 11th century, India's culture outshone her neighbors. The birthplace of two great religions, Hinduism and Buddhism, India led much of the rest of Asia in religious and secular knowledge.
The Muslim scholar al-Biruni spent 13 years traveling the country to learn the secrets of Hindu wisdom. In the ancient city of Benares, he studied the rites of death and the river of life, the Ganges.
"The Hindus believe that in ancient times the Ganges flowed into Paradise," he observed. "Into this river they throw the burned bones of their dead so that nothing remains of them, and every defilement, dirt and smell is annihilated at once, so as scarcely to leave any trace behind. To Hindus, the fire eats everything."
A philosopher, astrologer and mathematician, al-Biruni found Hindu culture challenging to his own ideas.

Sei Shonagon lived in Japan a thousand years ago, at the Heian court. For 10 years, she was a lady in waiting to the empress. She recorded this intimate world in "The Pillow Book," a collection of notes, anecdotes and observations of everyday life at court.
"When I make myself imagine what it is like to be one of those women who live at home, faithfully serving their husbands -- women who have not a single exciting prospect in life, yet who believe they are perfectly happy -- I am filled with scorn," she wrote. "I wish they could live for a while in our society, so they might come to know what delights it has to offer."
Sei Shonagon's "Pillow Book" is filled with the spice and gossip of the court, a portrait in miniature of a rarefied society.

The year 1000 held terrors for Christians. Wrote one monk, "Perilous times were at hand for men's souls. ... When the millennium approached, almost the whole world suffered the loss of great men, noble laymen and clerics."
The year 1033 was the thousandth anniversary of Christ's crucifixion. From across Europe pilgrims traveled to Jerusalem seeking salvation. Then as now, it was the holy city of the people of the Book. Muslims shared it with Jews. Christians claimed the city as well.
But when pilgrims reached Jerusalem, they found Christianity divided. Rival traditions from all over Christendom worshipped in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. A thousand years later, they still worship there, but every column and candle is jealously fought over. They do not even trust each other to hold the keys to the door. For 800 years the same Muslim family has held them, locking it each evening and opening it the following day.
