A crosswind is any wind that has a perpendicular component to the line or direction of travel. They affect the aerodynamics of many forms of transport. Moving non-parallel to the wind's direction creates a crosswind component on the object and thus increasing the apparent wind on the object; such use of cross wind travel is used to advantage by sailing craft, kiteboarding craft, power kiting, etc. On the other side, crosswind moves the path of vehicules sideways and can be a hazard.
When winds are not parallel to or directly with/against the line of travel, the wind is said to have a crosswind component; that is, the force can be separated into two vector components:
A vehicle behaves as though it is directly experiencing a lateral effect of the magnitude of the crosswind component only. The crosswind component is computed by multiplying the wind speed by the sine of the angle between the wind and the direction of travel while the headwind component is computed in the same manner, using cosine instead of sine. For example, a 10-knot wind coming at 45 degrees from either side will have a crosswind component of 10 knots × sin(45°) and a head/tailwind component of 10 knots × cos(45°), both equals to 7.07 knots.
William Emanuel "Billy" Cobham (born May 16, 1944) is a Panamanian American jazz drummer, composer and bandleader, who permanently relocated to Switzerland during the late 1970s.
Coming to prominence in the late 1960s and early 1970s with trumpeter Miles Davis and then with Mahavishnu Orchestra, and on countless CTI releases. According to AllMusic's reviewer, Cobham is "generally acclaimed as fusion's greatest drummer". He has an influential style that combines explosive power and exacting precision. He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1987.
Born in Panama, Cobham moved with his family to New York City during his early childhood. A drummer from his youth, Cobham attended New York's High School of Music and Art, graduating in 1962.
He played in a U.S. Army Band from 1965 to 1968. Following his discharge, Cobham joined an ensemble led by pianist Horace Silver for about a year, also playing or recording with saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, organist Shirley Scott, and guitarist George Benson.
Some landing and take-off highlights in awkward wind conditions at BHX this winter (a record winter for stormy conditions in the UK). Note the frequent flexing of the planes' wings in response to the turbulence. Of the five "missed approaches" shown, three diverted to other airports, two were "go arounds" and landed successfully on second attempt.
Even aircraft as large as the Airbus A380, weighing over 276,000 kg empty, can struggle to battle against the elements of mother nature. One of these elements is the wind. Wind isn't a major issue until it's coming at an angle to the aircraft - a crosswind - that's when the difficulties begin! Watch as the world's largest passenger airliner battles these crosswinds on approach to the runway. This video is being managed exclusively by Newsflare. Some planes were diverted , on this day!!, and also the day before!
Here is an awesome compilation of small airplanes landing in extreme bad weather under stormy and windy weather conditions. This list consists of small airplanes that are pushed to their design limits. List of airplane types in this video compilation (No particular order): 1. ATR 72 Crosswind Takeoff 2. ATR 72 Crosswind Aborted Landing 3. ATR-42 Crosswind Landing 4. Fokker 100 Crosswind Landing 5. British Aerospace / Avro RJ100 Crosswind Hard Landing 6. Bombardier CRJ700 Crosswind Landing 7. New York Gypsy All Stars performed Crosswinds for congahead.com. This veritable United Nations of musicians consists of Tamer Pinarbasi, kanun (Turkey); Ismail Lumanovski (Macedonia), clarinet; Engin Gunaydin (Turkey), drums; Panagiotis Andreou (Greece), bass; Jason Lindner (US), keyboard
Finally I was able to film another Crosswind video at Düsseldorf. Almost two years after I made the last crosswind video the wind conditions were perfect for lots of crosswind action again. Check out the amazing skills of the pilots. Some of them realy had a hard time trying to land during these stormy conditions. We had wind speeds up to 55kts. I spend 7 hours at the airport and I was able to see 15 go arounds. Not all of them are shown in this video cause most of them already made a go around far before reaching the runway. Featured planes: Boeing 737, Boeing 757, Boeing 777, Boeing 787, Airbus A320, Airbus A330, Fokker 100, CRJ-900 and more. A severe storm passed Europe yesterday and some pilots had to fight with extreme crosswinds again while trying to land at Düsseldorf. Storm "Katie" reached wind speeds up to 60 miles an hour and the wind was coming from South/East, which caused a 90° "wind attack" angle for the planes. Some airplanes which tried to land at Paris CDG or London Heathrow had to divert to other airports because the wind was way to strong. I spent 8 hours at the airport yesterday and some of the clips are a little dark because I already started filming before sunrise. Check out the rabbits crosswing the runway while the Cathay Pacific Boeing 777 landed. The annual "Crosswind Landing" competition took place at Düsseldorf again ;). Exactly one year ago I uploaded my last corsswind landing video. Featured pla...
When conditions are less than ideal, the particular distribution of buildings and earth mounds etc around BHX usually claims the odd victim, as the unpredictable wind currents and eddies suddenly catch the unfortunate plane. Here, an Airbus A321 is forced to go around on first landing attempt, then is successful on second attempt - but not without a further nudge from the atmosphere. _____________________________________________________________________________ To use this video in a commercial player or in broadcasts, please email licensing@storyful.com
We'll find each other where we promised
Where the tide is low for man and spirits
I put aside the yearning of my voice when i was young
We'll find each other where we promised.
Even until the darkest hour
When the lives we left are gone forever
We hover on the crosswinds
There is time to meet again
Even until the darkest hour
We'll find each other where we promised
