(s)election fraud
A "free and fair" election was not held in the United States on Nov. 3, 2004. Voting "irregularities" were widespread, and often concentrated in money-poor areas inhabited by people-of-color. People were illegally turned away from the polls, given misinformation about when/if they could vote, and found that their registrations had disappeared. Additionally, electronic voting machines that were easy-to-hack and had no ability to produce a paper trail were in use in more areas than ever before. Throw in corporate-owned candidates up and down the ticket that provided no meaningful choice, and Nov. 3 2004 really was a sElection. After the sElection, "third party" candidates attempted to call the powers-that-be on their scams by demanding recounts in several states, and activists worked hard to expose the issues of racist fraud, electronic voting machines, and the generally undemocratic workings of voting in the U.S. The problems of 2004 were already raising their ugly heads in 2002 and 2000. This section goes back to 2002 and will continue to be updated as more developments happen. See also: [ pdx indymedia sElection 2004 coverage | Black Box Voting ]

Have you been wondering what's happened with HB 3270, the bill sponsored by Representative Mitch Greenlick to mandate verification of machine-tallied election results in Oregon? Thanks to all of you who previously contacted your elected representatives, it's still alive in the Oregon House - not well, but alive.
The Secretary of State's office has been voicing objections to the bill but it is finally on its way to being amended and is scheduled for a work session in the House Elections, Ethics and Rules (EER) Committee next Friday, May 25th. If the bill makes it out of committee, it will go to the full House for a vote and then on to the Senate. Time is critical now, with the legislative session scheduled to end on June 30th. The clock is ticking to pass legislation mandating verification of machine-tallied election results before the 2008 elections! Your voices are needed once again.

According to sources interviewed by Black Box Voting, the women were offered plea bargains but declined, and their supervisors were never publicly required to account for the illegal manipulation of Cuyahoga County ballots during the 2004 recount of the presidential election.
Three Cuyahoga County elections workers were indicted; two (Kathleen Dreamer and Jacqui Maiden) were convicted today. The third, Rosie Grier, was acquitted. Neither Cuyahoga Elections Director Michael Vu nor Cuyahoga County Board of Elections chair Bob Bennett have publicly answered questions on this matter.

Despite the bitter cold, hundreds of thousands once again filled the massive Zocalo Square in the Mexican capital on Monday, November 20th. They were there to participate in the ceremony of the swearing in of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO), of the left wing PRD, as the legitimate president of Mexico, in a clear act of rejection of the electoral fraud which robbed him of his victory in the July 2nd presidential elections.
This was the continuation of a protest movement which saw millions take to the streets for a period of three months and which culminated in a National Democratic Convention (CND) on September 16th where more than one million delegates decided not to recognise the official results of the presidential elections and to declare AMLO as the only legitimate president of the country. The crowd chanted slogans such as, "It is an honour to be with Obrador", "We can hear, we can see, we have a president", as Lopez Obrador received the presidential band from the hands of the veteran social fighter Rosario Ibarra de Piedra. On October 28th a number of provocations took place on the barricades in Oaxaca, with members of the local police and thugs from the PRI (the party of state governor Ulises Ruiz) firing on APPO militants. Four people were killed, including New York Indymedia journalist Brad Will [Video] This was the prelude for the entry of the Army and Federal Police into Oaxaca on October 29th. OAXACA: Portrait of a BarricadeCinco Señores barricade, positioned in front of the university to protect the radio within it and the autonomy of the university, is the last major barricade in Oaxaca City known as the "Barricade of Victory" Despite repression, the "Barricade of Victory" remains, and today the barricade defenders and the university radio defenders were in a festive spirit preparing for the mega-march to retake the Zocalo from police possession tomorrow, practicing launching rocks with slings and slingshots. The barricade has also lacked direct backing from the APPO directive body, who say that the barricades no longer have a purpose. Oaxaca: Illegal Detentions and TortureNovember 24th, 2006 - CMI Chiapas writes: In a press conference given today by the APPO at 2pm at the encampment in Santo Domingo, spokespersons affirmed that they will continue implementing the plan of action as agreed upon with the Seventh MegaMarch which will leave from the Casa del Gobierno en Santa María Coyotepec tomorow, November 25th, 10am, heading towards the zócalo to surround the PFP and reiterate their principle demands. Additionlly, they made known the testimony of a witness to an attack on said barricade by thugs and paramilitaries that left 2 compañeros kidnapped and detained. Mexico Splits in Half: the Election Hits the Streets
A full week after the most viciously contested presidential election in its modern history, a Florida-sized fraud looms over the Mexican landscape and the nation has been divided almost exactly in half along political, economic, geographical and racial lines. Video, audio and photographic evidence of election fraud surges daily. It is the dominant news story in Mexico. Obrador released a similar video of election officials in PAN-controlled Querétaro changing the vote tallies to create more votes for its candidate. The PAN does not deny the facts. It simply claims that those cases amounted to normal, allowed, functions by election officials. The public temper rises with every such justification. Moreover, the disputed election pits an indignant Indian and mestizo underclass that believes AMLO was swindled out of the presidency by electoral fraud against a wealthy white conservative minority that controls the nation's media, its banks, and apparently, the Federal Electoral Institute (IFE), Mexico's maximum electoral authorities. Lopez Obrador charges the IFE and its president Luis Carlos Ugalde with orchestrating Calderon's uncertain triumph. www.counterpunch.org | www.narconews.com Death By Video Related:Evidence of Systemic Gov't Election Racketeering Mounts in Mexico, Witness Comes Forward | Mobilise the masses and call a general strike to stop electoral fraud | World Media Covers Up Mexican Vote Fraud | Mexico's Surreal Elections | NY Times to Obrador: "Go Home, You Crazy Leftist!" | Al Giordano Report: Calderon Family Did IFE compters:IFE admin should be jailed | Between The Lines Radio Interview | Democracy Now! Supporters of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador show electoral ballots that were found in a public dump. One of Obrador's aides, Claudia Sheinbaum, went on to claim that their party had found "very grave inconsistencies" in 50,000 polling booths, including 18,646 in which there were more votes cast than registered voters.
Obrador calls Mexican elections fradulent, and wants a full recount. Leonel Cota, president of Obrador's PRD party, vowed to "launch a battle for the legitimacy of the election," and a COALITION of the PRD AND TWO OTHER parties held a press conference and issued a statement.... --- Mexico's review of 41 million votes cast in Sunday's disputed presidential election started on Wednesday. Soon, media trumpeted unofficial gap between the two leading candidates, Calderon [a Bush-linked internationalist neofascist, straight out of the Mexican Energy [oil] Department, where he was once Secretary]...the other, Obrador, a [presumably nationalist] leftist, narrowed as a record of fraud increasingly mounted. Thanks to Obrador's supporters, of whom many are poor ruralites and urbanites who have seen their standard of living fall more by NAFTA and neoliberalist policies, they are eager to see competitive democracy take root in Mexico. This election is seen as a vote for or against more neoliberalist policies. Obrador's supporters (ACROSS SEVERAL PARTIES) could take to the streets to defend democratic legality against an internationalist fascist Bush-linked candidate Calderon's coup. Such foreign interference in Mexican elections has already been noted: Mexican arrests of Bush family linked Choice-Point election corporation from the U.S., which was illegally found in possession of Mexican voter rolls, according to Greg Palast. [ full story ] Evidence of Systemic Gov't Election Racketeering Mounts in Mexico, Witness Comes Forward: IFE employee Loar Cibac Pereira Sanchez said that he was working in one of the electoral agency's regional offices (in Saltillo, Coahuila). He confirms that on Sunday night, as he was entering election results into the IFE PREP system computers, his boss, Jose Luis Fernandez Mier, "ordered him to type in vote tallies favorable to Calderon and threatened to transfer him to a rural office if he didn't obey." Investigative reporter Greg Palast spoke in Portland on Monday evening, June 5, 2006, to packed house at the First Unitarian Church. The event was sponsored by KBOO radio, 90.7 fm and the Portland Alliance newspaper. His appearance was part of an international tour called, "Armed Madhouse: Dispatches From the Front Lines of the Class War." Palast was his usual flippant, humorous and sarcastic self. Yet, under this veneer he unleashes serious facts and devastating statistics which, at least to my mind, leave no doubt as to the deliberate fraud perpetrated on the American voter during the 2000 and 2004 general election. For instance, 2004 exit polls showed John Kerry ahead 51% to George Bush 49 among men and 53% to 47% among women. "Okay class, what is the third sex that put George Bush over the top...... the disappeared, the uncounted." [ read more ] From my little note pad...Greg urged all of us to write our County Election Clerks and demand Verified Elections in Oregon. He told of spoiled votes and how he once flew to New Mexico And there he found 34,000 uncounted ballots in the garbage so to speak Problems with chads, touch screens, and GLITCH's these were the "spoiled votes". He discusses the other type of "rejected ballots" which also were not counted. These were known as "provisional ballots". Which were all those Military Ballots, that were returned because they couldn't be "forwarded to the soldier's location" Resulting in many Soldiers that didn't get to vote at all. And ALL, by the way, were black soldiers. [ read more ] related: Democracy Now! In October of 2005, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1461, The Federal Housing Finance Reform Act. This bill contained a Low Income Housing Fund, which would assist local agencies in providing much-needed housing for low income families. This bill, however, contained a rider saying, in effect, that any agency which does any kind of work around voter registration would be ineligible for funding. Not only that, but here's the kicker, if they had done any of this kind of work in the previous 12 months to applying, they would also be ineligible.
Almost immediately, Multnomah County, Oregon (where I live) contacted the housing agencies with which it does business, and told them to cease all voter registration work. They are not even allowed to have voter registration forms in their offices for people to pick up. First, let me point out that, as of the first of June, 2006, this bill is not even law yet. The senate counterpart to this bill, S. 190, has yet to be referred to the floor. In any case, the Senate version does not include this heinous voter registration restriction.

Three Portland residents traveled to El Salvador this March as international elections observers. The Portland residents were part of a mission of 36 observers from the United Status, Spain, Switzerland, and Germany. The mission traveled to El Salvador to witness the transparency in the electoral process, which is an element of the democratization as established by the 1992 Peace Accords that ended a 12-year civil war between a poor people's guerrilla army and a right-wing, U.S.-backed military government.
Delegates will share their experiences from El Salvador Saturday April 1, 7 PM at the Musicians Hall (325 NE 20th Ave, Portland). The event is free and open to the public.

Friday night's (last night's) lecture by Thom Hartmann and Bob Fitrakis on the details of vote tampering in Ohio and its implications was great. Intelligent, well researched, engaged and well spoken speech from Fitrakis gave everyone the knowledge and determination we will need to address the serious problem of unverifiable votes and corruption in elections and its roots.

Your immediate action is needed to ensure safe and accurate elections in the state of Washington. The legislators must hear from all of us as soon as possible, or we may lose our chance to ensure paper ballots in Washington. ESSB 5395 requires a voter-verified paper record of each vote, makes that paper record the official record for recounts and audits, and requires an audit of the records produced by electronic voting machines. This is a good bill. It was passed unanimously by the Washington State Senate, and by the House State Government Operations and Accountability Committee. Now two auditors, Bob Terwilliger of Snohomish County and Corky Mattingly of Yakima County, have written to the legislators, attempting to kill the bill before it is enacted, claiming the bill is supported *only by a few vocal citizens.

(RawStory.com/exclusives/) The lawyers for Green presidential candidate David Cobb and Libertarian presidential candidate Michael Badnarik, along with Kerry-Edwards 2004 have added election tampering to a civil suit filed against the state of Ohio over problems with the state's recount, RAW STORY has learned.
The suit, detailed here, alleges that a manufacturer of voting machines, Triad Election Systems, which serves 43 counties in the state, is tampering with the recount. It is unclear exactly what recourse the plaintiffs' seek; the filing adds on to an original suit to have the recount take place before Ohio electors meet, which failed in the courts. Green Party spokesman Blair Bobier said the party hoped to reform the recount process and suggested Ohio should secure or impound voting machines. 'DT' adds: This story should be big news across the U.S.A. -- of course, it is systematically ignored by the corporate media. That's why I am reporting here at PDX indymedia. |
