Hunting death, file photo nonsense

NZ Herald seems to often use file photos for online news items, and they are often inappropriate.

News: Man dies in hunting incident in Central Otago

An investigation has been launched after a 61-year-old man died in a hunting incident last night.

Police say emergency services were alerted to the incident in an area of the Nevis Range in Central Otago shortly before midnight.

Ambulance and police officers performed CPR on the injured man but were unable to revive him.

This is of particular interest to me as I know the area and if the dead man is a long time local I will probably known him.

Talking about the area, I’d be surprised if was on the Nevis Range. More likely the Carrick Range, which you drive over on the Nevis Road to get to the Lower Nevis Valley where the Nevis River flows.

There’s a Nevis Range in Scotland.  In New Zealand  Ben Nevis is a peak in the Hector Mountains, which runs alongside the Nevis Valley, which is named after a river, not a range.

I’d be surprised if you can get an ambulance on to Ben Nevis.

Talking of ambulances, the Herald includes a file photo:

That ambulance is likely to have never been anywhere near the Nevis Range, or the Nevis Road. Why include something that’s irrelevant to the story?

They might as well have shown a file photo of the Nevis Range from Scotland, that also has nothing to do with the story.

UPDATE: The ODT has a bit more detail in Man dies in Central Otago hunting incident:

Police say emergency services were alerted to an incident in an area of the Nevis Range near Duffers Saddle shortly before midnight.

UPDATE: The ODT has amended their online story.

Duffers Saddle is the highest point (1300 metres, 4265 feet) ) on the Nevis Road going over the Carrick Range.

    Key words “area of”.

    • There is no Nevis Range in New Zealand as far as I’m aware, so ‘area of’ is a key error.

So they said Range instead of Valley.

How is an ambulance an “inappropriate” image to illustrate a story of a man dying in an ambulance?
Or, what’s wrong with the media using file images?

It is inappropriate because that picture has zero to do with the story unless you don’t know what an ambulance is.

We’re not children. We know what ambulances look like. We don’t need a random picture of a random ambulance to help us understand the story.

When they had a story about a couple suing because she became pregnant after a failed vasectomy, they (with no warning) showed the body part in question (full screen) and then a vasectomy being done to it. We all know what that part of the male anatomy looks like and how a vasectomy works. We don’t need to see it magnified ? times (I’d hate to think what it looked like on a big television, it was bad enough on ours. The point of the story was that the baby had come along anyway, and the showing of an actual vasectomy was gratuitous.

The silliest of all has to be when the reporter’s ‘at the scene’ and all we see is them standing under a lamppost on a piece of pavement that could be anywhere.

Yes, or travelling hundreds of miles to stand in the rain and give us information they could have told us from their desk in the studio.

That beautiful pic of our own Ben Nevis stirred my soul to action
I think a scramble to the top in high summer would be an enriching experience and one within the capabilities of these old arthritic bones

Make sure you alert the people in the Gun Shooting Community before you climb it … and it might be a good idea to have an ambulance at the ready as well. LOL :)

          @Conspirator

Will it be an individuals race … or you and me against Partisan and Kiwi Guy?

I ran all the way up to Bald Spur on Mount Te Aroha once … although that was more than 30 years ago.

But I am still fit and trim from walking a couple of hours each day and playing squash … so I guess I should be able to climb that mountain :)

Hey … you are doing normal smiley faces :)

You should come on the hike with the rest of us Kitty.

It would be good to have another girl on the trip … and we could sing duets together. LOL.
