A cathedral (French: cathédrale from Latin: cathedra, "seat" from the Greek kathedra (καθέδρα), seat, bench, from kata "down" + hedra seat, base, chair) is a Christian church which contains the seat of a bishop, thus serving as the central church of a diocese, conference, or episcopate. The counterpart term for such a church in German is Dom from Latin domus ecclesiae or domus episcopalis; also Italian Duomo, Dutch Domkerk and cognates in many other European languages. Churches with the function of "cathedral" are usually specific to those Christian denominations with an episcopal hierarchy, such as the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox, and some Lutheran and Methodist churches. Church buildings embodying the functions of a cathedral first appear in Italy, Gaul, Spain and North Africa in the 4th century, but cathedrals did not become universal within the Western Catholic Church until the 12th century, by which time they had developed architectural forms, institutional structures and legal identities distinct from parish churches, monastic churches and episcopal residences.
The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá (Spanish: Catedral de Sal de Zipaquirá) is an underground Roman Catholic church built within the tunnels of a salt mine 200 metres (220 yd) underground in a Halite mountain near the town of Zipaquirá, in Cundinamarca, Colombia. It is a very popular tourist destination and place of pilgrimage in the country. The name "Salt Cathedral" is mostly to attract tourists - while a functioning church that receives as many as 3,000 visitors on Sundays, it has no bishop and therefore no official status as a cathedral in Catholicism.
The temple at the bottom has three sections, representing the birth, life, and death of Jesus. The icons, ornaments and architectural details are hand carved in the halite rock. Some marble sculptures are included.
The Salt Cathedral is considered one of the most notable achievements of Colombian architecture, being described as a "Jewel of Modern Architecture". The cathedral represents for the Colombian people a valuable cultural, environmental and religious patrimony.
The Virtual International Authority File (VIAF) is an international authority file. It is a joint project of several national libraries and operated by the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC). The project was initiated by the German National Library and the US Library of Congress.
The aim is to link the national authority files (such as the German Name Authority File) to a single virtual authority file. In this file, identical records from the different data sets are linked together. A VIAF record receives a standard data number, contains the primary "see" and "see also" records from the original records, and refers to the original authority records. The data are made available online and are available for research and data exchange and sharing. Reciprocal updating uses the Open Archives Initiative protocol.
The file numbers are also being added to Wikipedia biographical articles and are incorporated into Wikidata.
Santiago de Compostela, commonly known as Santiago (/ˌsæntɪˈɑːɡoʊ/, Galician: [sanˈtjaɣo], Spanish: [sanˈtjaɣo]), is the capital of the autonomous community of Galicia in northwestern Spain.
The city has its origin in the shrine of Saint James the Great, now the city's cathedral, as destination of the Way of St. James, a leading Catholic pilgrimage route originated in the 9th century. In 1985 the city's Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Santiago is the local Galician evolution of Vulgar Latin Sanctus Iacobus "Saint James". According to legend, Compostela derives from the Latin Campus Stellae (i.e., "field of the star"); it seems unlikely, however, that this phrase could have yielded the modern Compostela under normal evolution from Latin to Medieval Galician. Other etymologies derive the name from Latin compositum, local Vulgar Latin Composita Tella, meaning "burial ground", or simply from Latin compositellam, meaning "the well-composed one". Other sites in Galicia share this toponym, akin to Compostilla in the province of León.

History of Gothic Cathedral (full documentary) - DOCS CHANNEL Gothic architecture is a style of style that grew throughout the high and late middle ages period. It developed from Romanesque design and was succeeded by Renaissance style. Originating in 12th-century France and lasting into the 16th century, Gothic style was understood during the period as Opus Francigenum ("French your job") with the term Gothic first showing up during the later component of the Renaissance. Its qualities include the pointed arc, the ribbed vault and also the flying buttress. Gothic style is most familiar as the architecture of several of the excellent basilicas, abbeys as well as churches of Europe. It is also the architecture of several castles, palaces, town halls, guild halls, universities and to a less...

This is the cathedral shot we did at Oblique for the movie Rescue 3D in IMAX. It shows the devastating effects of after shock earthquakes in Haiti. Originally, we were supposed to do the entire cathedral collapse, but due to budjet and time constraints, we did only parts of it. I was CG supervisor on the project, but didn't work actively on this shot. The whole shot was done by a small team of 4 people (with some help by others) led by my good friend Bruno Olivier-Laflamme. Gabriel Martin, Marc-André Poulin and Martin Lipmann were his main soldiers. Benoit Blouin and Aelis Héraud. Everything except the smoke was done in Softimage. Shattering was done with Kratos Simulation was done with Momentum. Rendered with Arnold Smoke was simulated and rendered in FumeFX. stats: 5.8 million triang...
For 53 years, Justo Gallego has been building a cathedral by hand on the outskirts of Madrid almost entirely by himself. Gallego has no formal architecture or construction training, but that hasn't stopped him from toiling on this herculean task. At 90 years old, Gallego knows that he will not be able to finish the project in his lifetime. But he keeps at it anyway, day after day, driven by his faith.
This is the making-of for the cathedral shot we did at Oblique for the movie Rescue 3D in IMAX (http://vimeo.com/25829264) In this video you can see the original plate, the model for entire cathedral, the CG cathedral comped as-is over the plate, the RBD simulation and the smoke. Find me on Facebook and Twitter. @AndrewJulianB http://www.facebook.com/andrewjulianb Claire and I recently took a trip to France, and I filmed this during our time in Paris. Until this trip, I had only ever experienced Paris in the summer and I was struck by just how different the city is when most of us tourist are gone. We were equipped with our metro and museum passes and were able to easily access most places of interest without even waiting in line. It was incredible! We were even given a private tour of the École du Louvre. Thanks Elisabeth! The weather wasn't always perfect, but our experience was totally different and unique. Now I'm truly curious to visit the city in other seasons. Maybe a trip during the Fall someday? I continue to be amazed by the little camera that could, a...
There are times you hold the deed to my insides
And steal the sparkle from my eyes
But this could be the last time baby
This could be the last time
And back then dressed up as some kind of true friend
You taught me how to lie for you, cry for you, get drunk and get high off you
What are your thoughts about that
What are your thoughts
Baby I just wanna be free
Can't you see what I see?
What made you think that you could own me?
I just wanna be free
Can't you see what I see?
You never ever tried to know me
Well you never asked me how I felt
And still I'd rhyme for you, shine for you, lay down and die for you
This could be the last time
Baby I just wanna be free
Can't you see what I see?
What made you think that you could own me?
I just wanna be free
Can't you see what I see?
You never ever tried to know me
Well stop to understand
You're holding me down instead of holding my hand
And I'll be crashing through cathedral doors
The day I don't need you anymore
Baby I just wanna be free
Can't you see what I see?
What made you think that you could own me?
I just wanna be free
Can't you see what I see?
You never ever tried to know me
You taught me how to lie for you, cry for you get drunk and get high off you
(I just want to be free, can't you see what I see)
What are your thoughts about that, what are your thoughts
And still I'd rhyme for you, shine for you, lay down and die for you
(I just want to be free, can't you see what I see)
This could be the last time, this could be the last time
Oh... Oh...
I just want to be free can't you see what I see
What made you think that you could own me?
Oh... Oh...
I just want to be free can't you see what I see
You never ever tried to know me
