The True Nature Of Time - New Documentary 2016
Theories of science have ignored time… until now. A new idea reveals how it created the Universe – and you, writes Robert Matthews.
Time: it rules our lives, and we all wish we had more of it. Businesses make money out of it, and scientists can measure it with astonishing accuracy. Earlier this year, American researchers unveiled an atomic clock accurate to better than one second since the Big Bang 14 billion years ago.
But what, exactly, is time? Despite its familiarity, its ineffability has defied even the greatest thinkers. Over 1,600 years ago the philosopher Augustine of Hippo admitted defeat with words that still resonate: “If no-one asks me, I know what it is. If I wish to explain it to him who asks, I do not know.”
Yet according to theoretical physicist Lee Smolin, the time has come to grapple with this ancient conundrum: “Understanding the nature of time is the single most important problem facing science,” he says.
As one of the founders of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Ontario, Canada, which specialises in tackling fundamental questions in physics, Professor Smolin has spent more time pondering deep questions than most. So why does he think the nature of time is so important? Because, says Smolin, it is central to the success of attempts to understand reality itself.
To most people, this may sound a bit overblown. Since reality in all its forms, from the Big Bang to the Sunday roast, depends on time, isn’t it obvious that we should take time seriously? And didn’t scientists sort out its mysteries centuries ago?

People are obsessed with time travel. After all, who hasn’t dreamed of hooking some form of flux capacitor up to the family car and heading back in time to see what things were really like? Unfortunately, those pesky scientists have argued time and time again that time travel is simply not possible. What do they know? OK, so in order to make it possible we’d have to travel faster than the speed of light which is theoretically impossible to do. We’d probably need a DeLorean because it would make things just feel right – and they are getting harder and harder to find in good running order. Finally, you’d need some uranium to power your time machine – if the movies are anything to go by – and given the way the way the world reacts to certain countries handling the radioactive stuff we’re thinking that might be pretty near impossible.
Still, none of this ‘proof’ has stopped us from thinking about time travel and dreaming that one day we could go forward or backwards in time. Until then, we’ll just have to let our imaginations run wild as we search for any shred of ‘evidence’ to prove that time travel is possible. And searched we have. Recently, there’s been a big trend of searching out old photos to find anomalies or things that just don’t fit. Whether objects or people who seem out of place, some have taken this as proof of some sort of time travel ability. We’ll let you take a look and be the judge of it all.

Hans Florian Zimmer (German pronunciation: [hans ˌfloːʁi̯aːn ˈtsɪmɐ]; born 12 September 1957) is a German composer and record producer. Since the 1980s, he has composed music for over 150 films. His works include The Lion King, for which he won Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1994, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, The Thin Red Line, Gladiator, The Last Samurai, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, and Interstellar.
Zimmer spent the early part of his career in the United Kingdom before moving to the United States. He is the head of the film music division at DreamWorks studios and works with other composers through the company that he founded, Remote Control Productions.
Zimmer's works are notable for integrating electronic music sounds with traditional orchestral arrangements. He has received four Grammy Awards, three Classical BRIT Awards, two Golden Globes, and an Academy Award. He was also named on the list of Top 100 Living Geniuses, published by The Daily Telegraph.

Theories of science have ignored time… until now. A new idea reveals how it created the Universe – and you, writes Robert Matthews.
Time: it rules our lives, and we all wish we had more of it. Businesses make money out of it, and scientists can measure it with astonishing accuracy. Earlier this year, American researchers unveiled an atomic clock accurate to better than one second since the Big Bang 14 billion years ago.
But what, exactly, is time? Despite its familiarity, its ineffability has defied even the greatest thinkers. Over 1,600 years ago the philosopher Augustine of Hippo admitted defeat with words that still resonate: “If no-one asks me, I know what it is. If I wish to explain it to him who asks, I do not know.”
Yet according to theoretical physicist Lee Smolin, the time has come to grapple with this ancient conundrum: “Understanding the nature of time is the single most important problem facing science,” he says.
As one of the founders of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Ontario, Canada, which specialises in tackling fundamental questions in physics, Professor Smolin has spent more time pondering deep questions than most. So why does he think the nature of time is so important? Because, says Smolin, it is central to the success of attempts to understand reality itself.

People are obsessed with time travel. After all, who hasn’t dreamed of hooking some form of flux capacitor up to the family car and heading back in time to see what things were really like? Unfortunately, those pesky scientists have argued time and time again that time travel is simply not possible. What do they know? OK, so in order to make it possible we’d have to travel faster than the speed of light which is theoretically impossible to do. We’d probably need a DeLorean because it would make things just feel right – and they are getting harder and harder to find in good running order. Finally, you’d need some uranium to power your time machine – if the movies are anything to go by – and given the way the way the world reacts to certain countries handling the radioactive stuff we’re thinking that might be pretty near impossible.
Still, none of this ‘proof’ has stopped us from thinking about time travel and dreaming that one day we could go forward or backwards in time. Until then, we’ll just have to let our imaginations run wild as we search for any shred of ‘evidence’ to prove that time travel is possible. And searched we have. Recently, there’s been a big trend of searching out old photos to find anomalies or things that just don’t fit. Whether objects or people who seem out of place, some have taken this as proof of some sort of time travel ability. We’ll let you take a look and be the judge of it all.
