This is the first video in what will be, or is (depending on when you are watching this) a multipart video series about Simple Linear Regression. In the next few minutes we will cover the basics of Simple Linear Regression starting at square one. And for the record, from now on if I say "regression" I am referring to simple linear regression as opposed to multiple regression or models that are not linear.
Regression allows us to model, mathematically, the relationship between two or more variables. For now, we will be working with just two variables; an independent variable and a dependent variable. The truth is, when we talk about how "good" a regression model is we are actually comparing it to another specific model. Oftentimes, students do not realize this.
So in this video, we are going to talk about that idea. I will also begin introducing basic terminology and concepts that will carry you through your work using regression. There are no formulas or calculations in this video. We are just introducing the underlying meaning behind "good" regression models.
So if you are new to Regression or are still trying to figure out exactly what it even IS...this video is for you.
So sit back, relax, and let's go ahead and get to work.

Statistics is the study of the collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of data. It deals with all aspects of this, including the planning of data collection in terms of the design of surveys and experiments.
A statistician is someone who is particularly well versed in the ways of thinking necessary for the successful application of statistical analysis. Such people have often gained this experience through working in any of a wide number of fields. There is also a discipline called mathematical statistics that studies statistics mathematically.
The word statistics, when referring to the scientific discipline, is singular, as in "Statistics is an art." This should not be confused with the word statistic, referring to a quantity (such as mean or median) calculated from a set of data, whose plural is statistics ("this statistic seems wrong" or "these statistics are misleading").
Some consider statistics to be a mathematical body of science pertaining to the collection, analysis, interpretation or explanation, and presentation of data, while others consider it a branch of mathematics concerned with collecting and interpreting data. Because of its empirical roots and its focus on applications, statistics is usually considered to be a distinct mathematical science rather than a branch of mathematics. Much of statistics is non-mathematical: ensuring that data collection is undertaken in a way that allows valid conclusions to be drawn; coding and archiving of data so that information is retained and made useful for international comparisons of official statistics; reporting of results and summarised data (tables and graphs) in ways that are comprehensible to those who need to make use of them; implementing procedures that ensure the privacy of census information.

Melinda French Gates (born Melinda Ann French; August 15, 1964) is an American businesswoman and philanthropist. She is the wife of Bill Gates. She is the co-founder and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a former unit manager for several Microsoft products such as Publisher, Microsoft Bob, Encarta, and Expedia.
Melinda was born in Dallas, Texas. She was the second of four children born to Raymond Joseph French, Jr., an engineer, and Elaine Agnes Amerland, a homemaker. She has an older sister and two younger brothers. Gates, a Roman Catholic, attended St. Monica Catholic School, where she was the top student in her class year. She graduated as valedictorian from Ursuline Academy of Dallas in 1982. Gates earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and economics from Duke University in 1986 and an MBA from Duke's Fuqua School of Business in 1987.
Shortly thereafter, she joined Microsoft and participated in the development of many of Microsoft’s multimedia products including Publisher, Microsoft Bob, Encarta, and Expedia.

Statistics 101: Simple Linear Regression (Part 1), The Very Basics
This is the first video in what will be, or is (depending on when you are watching this) a multipart video series about Simple Linear Regression. In the next few minutes we will cover the basics of Simple Linear Regression starting at square one. And for the record, from now on if I say "regression" I am referring to simple linear regression as opposed to multiple regression or models that are not linear. Regression allows us to model, mathematically, the relationship between two or more variables. For now, we will be working with just two variables; an independent variable and a dependent variable. The truth is, when we talk about how "good" a regression model is we are actually comparing it to another specific model. Oftentimes, students do not realize this. So in this video, we are going to talk about that idea. I will also begin introducing basic terminology and concepts that will carry you through your work using regression. There are no formulas or calculations in this video. We are just introducing the underlying meaning behind "good" regression models. Regression allows us to model, mathematically, the relationship between two or more variables. For now, we will be working with just two variables; an independent variable and a dependent variable. The truth is, when we talk about how "good" a regression model is we are actually comparing it to another specific model. Oftentimes, students do not realize this.
So in this video, we are going to talk about that idea. I will also begin introducing basic terminology and concepts that will carry you through your work using regression. There are no formulas or calculations in this video. We are just introducing the underlying meaning behind "good" regression models.
So if you are new to Regression or are still trying to figure out exactly what it even IS...this video is for you.

Academic Excellence: Accelerated Statistics
Math 206, “Algebra for Statistics,” is a 5-credit hour remedial math course that introduces statistical concepts covered in Math 13 (Introduction to Statistics), while also reviewing algebraic concepts covered in Math 201 (Elementary Algebra) and Math 203 (Intermediate Algebra). It is designed specifically for the remedial math student who needs Math 13 to transfer. Algebraic concepts taught in Math 201/203 are contextualized in a data analysis approach, with a focus on those aspects of algebra that are needed for successful passage of Math 13. Since the course replaces Math 201 and Math 203, which are each 4 credit hours, it accelerates the student through the remedial math curriculum by saving them 1 semester and 3 credit-hours of remedial math work. The class meets twice a week, and with a total of almost 6 class hours there is more time to cover introductory statistical material at a slower pace than in the transfer-level course.
