The Barlow Road (at inception, Mount Hood Road) is a historic road in what is now the U.S. state of Oregon. It was built in 1846 by Sam Barlow and Philip Foster, with authorization of the Provisional Legislature of Oregon, and served as the last overland segment of the Oregon Trail. Its construction allowed covered wagons to cross the Cascade Range and reach the Willamette Valley, which had previously been nearly impossible. Even so, it was by far the most harrowing 100 miles (160 km) of the nearly 2,000-mile (3,200 km) Oregon Trail.
Before the opening of the Barlow Road, pioneers traveling by land from the east followed the Oregon Trail to Wascopam Mission (now The Dalles) and floated down the Columbia River to Fort Vancouver, then a perilous and expensive journey. It was also possible to drive livestock over Lolo Pass on the north side of Mount Hood, but that trail was too rugged for vehicles and unsuitable for wagons.
The Barlow Road begins at The Dalles and heads south to Tygh Valley (some consider Tygh Valley to be the beginning), then turns west and roughly parallels the White River on the north and then west, crosses the south shoulder of Mount Hood at Barlow Pass, follows Camp Creek and the Sandy River for some way, and finally leads to Oregon City. The road was rendered largely irrelevant in the early 1900s by the construction of the Mount Hood Highway. It still exists as a dirt road in some places, while many other parts have been paved over by new modern streets and highways.

The Oregon Trail is a 2,200-mile (3,500 km) historic east–west large-wheeled wagon route and emigrant trail that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon. The eastern part of the Oregon Trail spanned part of the future state of Kansas and nearly all of what are now the states of Nebraska and Wyoming. The western half of the trail spanned most of the future states of Idaho and Oregon.
The Oregon Trail was laid by fur trappers and traders from about 1811 to 1840 and was only passable on foot or by horseback. By 1836, when the first migrant wagon train was organized in Independence, Missouri, a wagon trail had been cleared to Fort Hall, Idaho. Wagon trails were cleared further and further west, eventually reaching all the way to the Willamette Valley in Oregon. What came to be called the Oregon Trail was complete, even as improved roads, cutoffs, ferries and bridges made the trip faster and safer almost every year. From various starting points in Missouri, Iowa or Nebraska Territory, the routes converged along the lower Platte River Valley near Fort Kearny, Nebraska Territory and led to rich farmlands west of the Rocky Mountains.
A road is a thoroughfare, route, or way on land between two places that has been paved or otherwise improved to allow travel by foot or some form of conveyance, including a horse, cart, bicycle, or motor vehicle.
Roads consist of one or two roadways (British English: carriageways), each with one or more lanes and any associated sidewalks (British English: pavement) and road verges.
Roads that are available for use by the public may be referred to as public roads or as highways.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) defines a road as "a line of communication (travelled way) using a stabilized base other than rails or air strips open to public traffic, primarily for the use of road motor vehicles running on their own wheels," which includes "bridges, tunnels, supporting structures, junctions, crossings, interchanges, and toll roads, but not cycle paths."
In urban areas roads may diverge through a city or village and be named as streets, serving a dual function as urban space easement and route. Modern roads are normally smoothed, paved, or otherwise prepared to allow easy travel. Historically many roads were simply recognizable routes without any formal construction or maintenance.
Stay tuned: Timberline, White River, Barlow Rd. and a late night rescue! We started out heading up to Timberline Lodge to have some clam chowder and play in the snow after a snow fall on Nov. 24th 2015. After dinner a flat tire sent most the crew heading home early, but a couple of us went to White River and headed off to go up Barlow Rd. when we came across some fellas that accidentally went down the wrong road and were stuck. Monster Jeep to the rescue...we towed them out and got on our way!
Made a quick trip down the Barlow Road with the Oregon Trail Off-Road group. Super dusty, limited amount of footage shot.

Hooked up with the PNWX club to make a run up to Badger Lake and a portion of the Barlow Road. Nice group to spend the day with. Video is mostly scraps from the spare cameras. Not much out of rig time to use the good camera. Made good with what I was able to capture.

This is the final gate on the toll road that Sam Barlow built that went from The Dalles, Oregon to Oregon City.
Barlow Road ws a toll road for almost 70 years, from 1846 to 1915. The toll gate was located in 5 different locations over the course of that time. The last location was about 1 mile east of Rhododendron (on highway 26), where a replica of the original tollgate was built in 1969 and is still standing. This replica is at the end of Pioneer Bridle Trail, and right next to a small parking lot for visitors. This video talks about the tollgate, but it is also a summary of the Barlow Road as a whole. The official deed in 1919 transferring ownership to the State of Oregon is inspirational and is quoted in this video. Thanks to Lloyd Musser, curator, Mt. Hood Museum in Government Camp, for access to the museum's archives, for maps, pioneer diaries, and more. Also, thanks to all those who...

Since 2009, the militant Islamist group known as Boko Haram has wreaked havoc in northern Nigeria. Instilling terror through bombings, abductions, and beheadings, Boko Haram is fighting to create an Islamic state in the most populous country in Africa. VICE News traveled to Nigeria to embed with the country's army as it ramped up its fight against Boko Haram, whose rise has caused a state of emergency. Starting off at Piccadilly station this video then mostly looks at Metrolinks as well as buses and trains. Locations include Deansgate Castlefields, Altrincham Interchange, Navigation Road, Trafford Bar and then on to Manchester Airport where the tram meets up with National Rail. The video then shows the section between Barlow Moor Road and St Werburgh's Road before moving onto Cornbrook and into the City Centre where we see progress of the second City avoiding line around St Peter's Square. Other locations include Shudehill, Victoria, Bury, Ethiad Stadium and Piccadilly Gardens.
This is the first of two videos I am making about my ebike ride at Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve in south San Jose. These trails are awesome but very steep. This is no easy bike ride or hike. It won't be on these videos, but one section was a 1500ft climb. With no electrons, calories, and water it was sheer torture, worse than Mission Peak. Anyway this video starts at Barlow Road on Mt. Umunhum. It a steep downhill that gets VERY steep at the end. Then it connects to Woods trail which is a slow climb. Let's say I this one I bit off more than I could chew and didn't prepare very well, however this section I was lovin it. Bare
Your love has laid me bare
No one has ever made me dare so much
With one sure touch
Until you touched me.
There
Where all my secrets hide
You look so deep inside you see
The real me
And still you love me.
And oh,
I am so naked and exposed
Every flaw and blemish shows
And still I feel beautiful
