Grand Blanc, Michigan

Grand Blanc is a city in Genesee County in the U.S. state of Michigan and a suburb of Flint. The population was 8,144 as of the 2010 US Census.

History

The unincorporated village of Grand Blanc, or Grumlaw, was a former Indian campground first settled by Jacob Stevens in Spring 1822. The Indian trail to Saginaw was laided out and staked in 1829 as Saginaw Road.

By 1916, the community (population 400) had a grade school, a private bank, flour mill, an elevator, a creamery and two churches, the Methodist Episcopal and the Congregational. The community was equipped with electrical lighting.

A ballot question in the May 2, 2006 Genesee County general election ended governmental research into a plan to consolidate the city and township governments; 68.62% of city voters opposed consolidation efforts whereas 31.38% were in favor.

In 2015, a resident of Grand Blanc and a student of Grand Blanc Community Schools, Shriya Yarlagadda, placed 2nd in the 27th National Geographic Bee. The city is also home to one of the greatest prep distance runners in the nation, Grant Fisher, who was the 7th high school runner to break the 4 minute mile and has won multiple national cross country and track and field championships, and Chuck Forrest, Jeopardy! winner in 1986.

C'est l'amour

"C'est l'amour" is a popular song recorded by Belgian band Léopold Nord & Vous. It was trio's debut single, released in September 1987, from the album of the same name, and perhaps remains to date its most known song, due to the huge success it met in France and the number of cover versions and remixes that it was the subject throughout the years. It can be deemed as band's signature song.

Background and release

In 1987, Alec Mension, a Belgian artist who had already released several singles in his country, recorded in Tony Visconti studio, in London, a song he wrote in English-language, entitled "Don't walk away". However, no recording company agreed to sign a contract with him, because nobody thought that the song had potential. Mension decided to re-record the song adding French voices to the English mix. He then re-wrote the lyrics in French-language along with his two brothers, Benoît and Hubert. The song was re-entitled "C'est l'amour".

The song was eventually released in early September 1987. The cover art was made by Steve Sauvage who also made those for Muriel Dacq's first two singles. "C'est l'amour" was re-issued in 1993 in remixed versions named "Unity Power mixes". "C'est l'amour" was part on many French and Belgian compilations released in the 2000s, such as Absolument 80: Tubes français Vol. 1, Top 50 vol.3, Nos belges années 1978-1988, volume 1, Bel 80 - Het beste uit de Belpop van 1987, Best of - Les Tubes Fête, Club 80's and 100 Chansons Françaises. In 2007 and 2008, the song was performed at the RFM Party 80 concert tour in which numerous artists of the 1980s, including Alec Mension, participated.

Théâtre de la Gaîté (rue Papin)

In 1862 during Haussmann's modernization of Paris the Théâtre de la Gaîté of the boulevard du Temple was relocated to the rue Papin across from the Square des Arts et Métiers. The new theatre, built in an Italian style to designs of the architects Jacques-Ignace Hittorff and Alphonse Cusin, opened on 3 September.

Within a decade the focus began to shift from melodrama to operetta and opera, so the theatre also came to be known as the Gaîté-Lyrique. In the early 1920s Diaghilev's Ballets Russes danced here, and after World War II it was used for musical comedy. In the 1970s attendance decreased, and there were several attempts to find new uses for the building, culminating in 1989 in the construction of a short-lived amusement park, that resulted in the demolition of most of the theatre, except for the facade, entrance and foyer. The latter were restored during a 2004 reconstruction that converted the building into an arts centre, La Gaîté Lyrique, completed in November 2010.

La Gaîté Lyrique

La Gaîté Lyrique is a digital arts and modern music centre opened by the City of Paris in December 2010, located at 3-5 rue Papin in the 3rd arrondissement.

The centre is on the site of the former Théâtre de la Gaîté, incorporating the facade, entrance and foyer of the original theatre. The auditorium of the theatre was demolished in 1989 for an amusement park.

The refurbishment lasted from 2004 to 2011 under the architect Manuelle Gautrand. The new General/Artistic Director is Jérôme Delormas.

History

Following Haussmann's modernization of Paris and the destruction of the theatres on the boulevard du Temple, the last of a succession of playhouses called the Théâtre de la Gaîté was built in the rue Papin. It opened on 3 September 1862. The building was designed by the architects Jacques-Ignace Hittorff and Alphonse Cusin, with an 1800-seat auditorium decorated by Félix Jobbé-Duval.

Concentrating on operettas, it also became known as the Gaîté-Lyrique and was at its height during the Second French Empire. Jacques Offenbach was its director from 1873 to 1874,
