Haytarma tells the story of the May 18, 1944, deportation through the life of Amet Khan Sultan, a fighter pilot twice named Hero of the Soviet Union. He was stationed in Crimea at the time of the deportation, and had been granted leave to visit his family in Alupka at the time the deportation started. For the first time in the history of Crimean Tatar nation, a full length feature film was released depicting the story of Tatar people in Crimea, inclusive of the deportation and resettlement imposed on them by the Soviet Union in 1944. "Haytarma"(Return), the title of this film, was directed by Akhtem Seytabla in Crimea, Ukraine . It is meant to be an accurate representation of the depth of the tragedy and gives insight to the severity of the impact it had on Tatar people through the life story of Amet-Han Sultan, a real life legendary Crimean Tatar fighter recognized as a hero of the Soviet Union and a frightening enemy of the Nazi air force. Understandably, "Haytarma" was quite difficult to shoot emotionally as it is still a haunting memory to millions of Crimean Tatars who endured the unspeakable horrors of the deportation and forced resettlement. The director encouraged actual Crimean Tatar natives to participate as extras in crowd scenes, but shooting this film was so grueling that 17 of the extras were overwhelmed and immediately delivered to a hospital. ATR TV, the first Crimean Tatar independent channel is a key supporter of this process and has helped sponsor the production of this motion picture. The purpose of creating "Haytarma" is to allow everyone to understand the anguish, fear, oppression, terror, and torment that Crimean Tatar people have faced. The film has aroused deep emotions and been at the center of controversy since its release. Many Crimean Tatars reported being deeply moved by the film, which put parents' and grandparents' stories into visual format. Russian generals who had been trained by Amet Khan Sultan were also invited to the premier.
