Travel video about destination Mosteiro de Batalha in Portugal.
The Batalha Monastery is one of Portugal's masterpieces of Late Gothic architecture and also one of its most important monuments. The monastery was built in thanksgiving to the Virgin Mary who answered the people's prayers during the decisive battle of Aljubarrota and in keeping with the political and historical significance of this victory, the architecture of the monastery is quite magnificent and full of artistic flair. Its construction took a hundred and fifty years. Its architecture was designed to be magnificently regal and majestic and it contains several royal tombs. Motifs of royal battledress partly decorate the interior of the church, a reminder of its former builder and patron, Joao The First, and through beautiful multi-coloured glass windows, rays of light illuminate a multitude of rich treasures. Today, the numerous Gothic ornaments and beautiful glass windows of more recent times provide the monastery with a dignified show of colour. However, little remains of the Holy Dominican Order that worshipped within its walls for more than four centuries. This exquisite monastery is quite rightly considered to be one of the most influential in the development of Portuguese architecture.

The Mosteiro De Alcobaca is a massive, medieval monastery in Alcobaca and one of the most important historical monuments in Portugal. The creative influence of the monastery's fraternity is still evident and its interior is one of the most beautiful examples of Gothic Cistercian design. King Afonso Henriques promised the construction of the Cistercian monastery in 1147 following a decisive victory over the Moors. He kept his word and six years after his military triumph the first construction work on the monastery began. The majority of the buildings were completed in 1222 although the monastery's kitchen and its impressive chimney were added in the 18th century. The Cloister was built in the 15th century at the time of King Dinis. Due to the vow of silence this building was known as the silent cloister. When the religious fraternities were disbanded in 1834 the Mosteiro De Alcobaca was abandoned by its monks but its treasures and much of its age old splendour have been preserved to the present day.

At one time its beautiful facade was situated close to the banks of the Tejo and it is no accident that the monastery was built in this location. King Manuel The First wanted the monastery to highlight the importance of religion for the sea-faring nation of Portugal at the beginning of the 16th century.Henry The Sailor donated the tiny Maria Chapel that was the first structure within the actual monastery area. Together with his father, King Joao The First, he led a fleet of 200 ships to victory against the North African harbour town of Cueta. Portugal was a mighty sea power. Courageous voyages of discovery led to the development of trade on newly discovered continents and along with his loyal sailors the world famous discoverer, Vasco Da Gamma, prayed in the Maria Chapel of Henry The Sailor prior to his ocean-going adventures. Ribbed Gothic vaults support the ceiling of the church that dates back to the 16th century. Coloured glass windows create a breathtaking spectacle of light. In addition to various important members of the Portuguese royal family and numerous religious leaders, it is also the final resting place of Vasco Da Gama. The monastery's richly decorated facade still shines out with all the glorious lustre of Portugal's courageous seamen and their remarkable voyages of discovery.

Travel video about destination Chorherrenstift Neustift in Austria.
The Chorherrenstift Neustift in the Southern Tyrol has a long and proud history. Its origins date back to the 12th century. The ancient domicile of the Royal Court of Neustift and a former hospice known as Engelsburg are located close to this monastic settlement. In 1189 Propst Konrad The Second Of Rodank ordered the construction of a sanctuary for pilgrims, the sick and the poor. The Collegiate's library has a remarkable collection of books and its captivating internal decor indicates the prosperity of a bygone time. Provost Leopold The First Of Zanna ordered the costly construction of the splendid library hall designed by architect Giuseppe Sartori of Trentino. The interior of the impressive Collegiate Church dates back to the 18th century. The building's decor is typical Late Baroque and its transition to Southern Germany's Rococo period. In addition to the elaborate creations of the Wessobrunner artists the ceiling frescos of the Augsburg artist, Matthaeus Guenther, are particularly noteworthy. Beyond the Collegiate there are marvellous fruit plantations and vineyards and The Turkish Tower is a reminder of the region's historic past. As with the entire area of the monastery the unique treasures of the Chorherrenstift Neustift have been preserved for posterity.

Philadelphia Pennsylvania's Independence Hall is looked upon by many as the "birth place of the United States of America".
Within these now historic walls, the Declaration of Independence was drafted, debated upon and finally signed in 1776.
The bell tower of Independence Hall held the original Liberty Bell which now resides in the Liberty Bell Center.
Construction of this American landmark started in 1732 in Georgian architectural style; twenty one years later it was finally finished.
Independence Hall has gone through many restorations over the years, and in 1948 the building's interior was reverted back to its original appearance.
This monument is housed within the confines of the Independence National Historic Park and has been honored with the moniker of World Heritage Site.
