The German S-mine (Schrapnellmine in German), also known as the Bouncing Betty, is the best-known version of a class of mines known as bounding mines. When triggered, these mines launch into the air and then detonate at about waist height. The explosion projects a lethal shower of steel balls and steel fragments in all directions. The S-mine was an anti-personnel landmine developed by Germany in the 1930s and used extensively by German forces during World War II. It was designed to be used in open areas to attack unshielded infantry. Two versions were produced, designated by the year of their first production: the SMi-35 and SMi-44. There are only minor differences between the two models.
The S-mine entered production in 1935 and served as a key part of the defensive strategy of the Third Reich. Until production ceased with the defeat of Germany in 1945, Germany produced over 1.93 million S-mines.[2] These mines were responsible for inflicting heavy casualties and slowing, or even repelling, drives into German-held territory throughout the war. The design was lethal, successful and much imitated and remains one of the definitive weapons of World War II.

Ethnic Albanian leaders have declared a day of mourning after a volunteer doctor died when his vehicle hit a land mine near Pristina.
The doctor was working for the International Committee of the Red Cross.
APTN has rare pictures of Kosovo Liberation Army soldiers, who appeared shortly after the explosion to clear the road of mines.
Sheptim Robaj, an ethnic Albanian doctor working for the International Committee of the Red Cross, died on Wednesday after his vehicle hit a land mine about 20 kilometres (17 miles) from Pristina.
The Red Cross immediately announced it would suspend its activities throughout the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as a mark of respect for the doctor.
It was not clear who had laid the mine, but Kosovo Liberation Army soldiers were filmed at the site of the explosion where they cleared other mines from the road.
Their presence here shows that there are still pockets of resistance in the Serb province.
Ethnic Albanian leader Ibrahim Rugova proclaimed Thursday a day of mourning.
The doctor had driven over a land mine here, on the Donje Obrinje-Likovac road, 20 kilometres (17 miles) west of Pristina.
The injured were taken to hospital in Pristina.
Another local doctor, Ilir Toljaj, was hospitalised in critical condition.
Two nurses, Maggie Bryson, from New Zealand, and Albanian Linda Buljaku, suffered light injuries.
Meanwhile, the U-N Security Council and representatives of the Contact Group of the five leading world powers were expected to hold an emergency meeting at U-N headquarters in New York on Thursday.
The meeting is to discuss the fighting between Serb security forces and ethnic Albanian rebels in Kosovo that has left hundreds dead.
Earlier in the week, diplomats, journalists and human rights workers saw as many as 18 mutilated bodies in nearby Obrija, eight kilometres (five miles) to the north, including those of women and children.

Land mine
A land mine is an explosive device concealed under or on the ground and designed to destroy or disable enemy targets, ranging from combatants to vehicles and tanks, as they pass over or near it. Such a device is typically detonated automatically by way of pressure when a target steps on it or drives over it, though other detonation mechanisms are also sometimes used. A land mine may cause damage by direct blast effect, by fragments that are thrown by the blast, or by both.
The name originates from the ancient practice of military mining, where tunnels were dug under enemy fortifications or troop formations by sappers. These killing tunnels ("mines") were at first collapsed to destroy targets located above, but they were later filled with explosives and detonated in order to cause even greater devastation.
Nowadays, in common parlance, land mines generally refer to devices specifically manufactured as anti-personnel or anti-vehicle weapons. Though many types of improvised explosive devices ("IEDs") can technically be classified as land mines, the term land mine is typically reserved for manufactured devices designed to be used by recognized military services, whereas IED is used for makeshift devices assembled by paramilitary, insurgent, or terrorist groups.

When triggered, these mines launch into the air and then detonate at about waist height. The explosion projects a lethal shower of steel balls and steel fragments in all directions. The S-mine was an anti-personnel landmine developed by Germany in the 1930s and used extensively by German forces during World War II. It was designed to be used in open areas to attack unshielded infantry. Two versions were produced, designated by the year of their first production: the SMi-35 and SMi-44. There are only minor differences between the two models.
The S-mine entered production in 1935 and served as a key part of the defensive strategy of the Third Reich. Until production ceased with the defeat of Germany in 1945, Germany produced over 1.93 million S-mines.[2] These mines were responsible for inflicting heavy casualties and slowing, or even repelling, drives into German-held territory throughout the war. The doctor was working for the International Committee of the Red Cross.
APTN has rare pictures of Kosovo Liberation Army soldiers, who appeared shortly after the explosion to clear the road of mines.
Sheptim Robaj, an ethnic Albanian doctor working for the International Committee of the Red Cross, died on Wednesday after his vehicle hit a land mine about 20 kilometres (17 miles) from Pristina.
The Red Cross immediately announced it would suspend its activities throughout the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as a mark of respect for the doctor.
It was not clear who had laid the mine, but Kosovo Liberation Army soldiers were filmed at the site of the explosion where they cleared other mines from the road.
Their presence here shows that there are still pockets of resistance in the Serb province.
Ethnic Albanian leader Ibrahim Rugova proclaimed Thursday a day of mourning.
The doctor had driven over a land mine here, on the Donje Obrinje-Likovac road, 20 kilometres (17 miles) west of Pristina.
The injured were taken to hospital in Pristina.
Another local doctor, Ilir Toljaj, was hospitalised in critical condition.
Two nurses, Maggie Bryson, from New Zealand, and Albanian Linda Buljaku, suffered light injuries.
Meanwhile, the U-N Security Council and representatives of the Contact Group of the five leading world powers were expected to hold an emergency meeting at U-N headquarters in New York on Thursday.
The meeting is to discuss the fighting between Serb security forces and ethnic Albanian rebels in Kosovo that has left hundreds dead.
Earlier in the week, diplomats, journalists and human rights workers saw as many as 18 mutilated bodies in nearby Obrija, eight kilometres (five miles) to the north, including those of women and children.

Sheptim Robaj, an ethnic Albanian doctor working for the International Committee of the Red Cross, died on Wednesday after his vehicle hit a land mine about 20 kilometres (17 miles) from Pristina.
The Red Cross immediately announced it would suspend its activities throughout the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as a mark of respect for the doctor.
It was not clear who had laid the mine, but Kosovo Liberation Army soldiers were filmed at the site of the explosion where they cleared other mines from the road.
Their presence here shows that there are still pockets of resistance in the Serb province.
Ethnic Albanian leader Ibrahim Rugova proclaimed Thursday a day of mourning.
The doctor had driven over a land mine here, on the Donje Obrinje-Likovac road, 20 kilometres (17 miles) west of Pristina.
The injured were taken to hospital in Pristina.
Another local doctor, Ilir Toljaj, was hospitalised in critical condition.
Two nurses, Maggie Bryson, from New Zealand, and Albanian Linda Buljaku, suffered light injuries.
Meanwhile, the U-N Security Council and representatives of the Contact Group of the five leading world powers were expected to hold an emergency meeting at U-N headquarters in New York on Thursday.
The meeting is to discuss the fighting between Serb security forces and ethnic Albanian rebels in Kosovo that has left hundreds dead.
Earlier in the week, diplomats, journalists and human rights workers saw as many as 18 mutilated bodies in nearby Obrija, eight kilometres (five miles) to the north, including those of women and children.

Land mine
A land mine is an explosive device concealed under or on the ground and designed to destroy or disable enemy targets, ranging from combatants to vehicles and tanks, as they pass over or near it. Such a device is typically detonated automatically by way of pressure when a target steps on it or drives over it, though other detonation mechanisms are also sometimes used. These killing tunnels ("mines") were at first collapsed to destroy targets located above, but they were later filled with explosives and detonated in order to cause even greater devastation.
Nowadays, in common parlance, land mines generally refer to devices specifically manufactured as anti-personnel or anti-vehicle weapons. Though many types of improvised explosive devices ("IEDs") can technically be classified as land mines, the term land mine is typically reserved for manufactured devices designed to be used by recognized military services, whereas IED is used for makeshift devices assembled by paramilitary, insurgent, or terrorist groups.
