Nicholas Christian Hopkins born during an air raid during the night of 24th February 1944 in the London suburb of Perivale. Hopkins started in the early 60's with Screaming Lord Sutch's Savages, which also included Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin's founder). He played also with the Cyril Davies All Stars, one of the first British Rhythm & Blues bands.
In 1965, he played piano on The Who's debut album and started playing keyboards in sessions for the top British bands including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks and on solo albums by John Lennon, David Bowie and so many others. Hopkins moved to San Francisco and helped to define the lexicon of San Francisco's sound, playing with Jefferson Airplane and Steve Miller Band and early joined to the psychedelic band Quicksilver Messenger Service.
The name of Nicky Hopkins featured in the credits of so many number of great rock albums from the late '60s through the '80s, underlining his amazing work on The Rolling Stones albums. For almost two decades, he was the most desired session pianist in rock; The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Jeff Beck Group, Steve Miller Band, there are so few many great rock bands that hadn't benefited from Nicky Hopkins' genius touch on the piano and keyboards.
Nicky Hopkins only recorded three solo albums "The Revolutionary Piano Of Nicky Hopkins"(1966), "The Tin Man Was A Dreamer"(1973) and "No More Changes"(1975).
Under his weak and delicate figure and often with ill health, Nicky Hopkins never toured much, preferring thus the studio to the road, dying in Nashville on 6th September 1994 at the tragically early age of fifty, from complications related to his lifelong illnesses. Nicky Hopkins was one of the most (maybe the most) important rock 'n' roll session musician ever.

Bobby Keys' self-titled debut is a bit of an odd beast. He's got one of the most amazing résumés in rock music as a sideman, so it's no surprise that there's quite a lineup on this album. Appearing are George Harrison, Jack Bruce, Ringo Starr, and possibly Eric Clapton, amongst many other famous players (proper credits would have been nice). Horn charts were by Keys' cohort Jim Price (who also played trumpet and keyboards) and the album was produced by Keys, Jim Gordon, and Andy Johns. It sounds great on paper, but the sound is more like backing tracks in search of a song, and only slightly more than a jam session with nice horn charts. It's not bad, it's just a bit disappointing. The liner notes indicate that the album took almost a year and suggest that Keys was not entirely into it. He only played live on one track ("Altar Rock") and it opens and closes as a bit of a proto-smooth jazz snoozer. Keys was also quick to note that the album was not the beginning of a solo career and kind of knocks his own playing. Of course, some people are better sidemen than bandleaders, but this was also a time of notorious partying (recording began after Keys, Price, and Nicky Hopkins wrapped up the Exile on Main St. tour). That said, the album isn't bad, just a bit on the slight side. The horn charts are great and there are some nice solos, particularly on guitar on what was once side two of the album. If you like the sound of the "Apple Jam" LP from All Things Must Pass (which also featured many of the players here), you'll probably like Bobby Keys.

The Airplane's set is a long one, the longest in the Woodstock Experience series, clocking in at over 90 minutes, but it's enthralling throughout. Whether it's the electrified versions of the tunes from Surrealistic Pillow -- "Plastic Fantastic Lover," "White Rabbit," and "Somebody to Love," or the 14-minute space rock in "The Ballad of You, Me & Pooneil," from After Bathing at Baxter's with its massive bass solo by Jack Casady, or the ragged but righteous "House at Pooneil Corners" from Crown of Creation, the Airplane prove here that they could rock with the best of them. Their set as a whole is explosive and full of surprises, with excellent vocal work from Grace Slick and Marty Balin, and very sophisticated interplay between Jorma Kaukonen, Paul Kantner, Casady, guest pianist Nicky Hopkins, and drummer Spencer Dryden.

April 15th, 1970
Quicksilver Messenger Service (QSM) were one of the quintessential San Franciscan bands who, although never equalling the success of their peers The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, still made some mgihty fine music, propelled by the twin guitars of John Cipollina and Gary Duncan, and later by the dextrous piano of Nicky Hopkins. Communal living, acid fuelled cowboy and Indian battles with The Grateful Dead, members jailed on drug charges, lengthy guitar passages and flaxen hair also gave them a certain counter cultural credibility that fitted the zeitgeist, outwardly marking them as wild men hippies.

BREWER & SHIPLEY - WEEDS (1969)
Brewer & Shipley are an American folk rock duo who enjoyed their peak success in the late 1960s through the 1970s, consisting of singer-songwriters Mike Brewer and Tom Shipley. They were known for their intricate guitar work, vocal harmonies, and socially conscious lyrics which reflected the concerns of their generation — especially the Vietnam War, and the struggles for personal and political freedom

Weeds was the second album by Brewer & Shipley and was released in 1969. The album was recorded at Golden State Recorders in San Francisco and produced by Nick Gravenites using the pseudonym "Nicky Gravy". Gravenites assembled a group of highly respected musicians for the album recording sessions, including guitarist Mike Bloomfield, bassist John Kahn, pedal steel guitarist Red Rhodes, violinist Richard Greene and keyboardists Mark Naftalin and Nicky Hopkins.
The album was a moderate success, with the final track, "Witchi-Tai-To", in particular receiving a lot of FM radio play. This exposure created a loyal underground following for the duo and set the stage for the commercial breakthrough they would enjoy with their next album release.
