Recorded 'in the round' with a youthful audience, this show is a true time capsule of the time. Host Dick Cavett welcomes guests Jefferson Airplane, singer Joni Mitchell and singer-musicians Stephen Stills and David Crosby.

There is a reason why the Jefferson Airplane was the first nationally renowned proponent of San Francisco rock. As much as they bucked establishment values, the sextet offered a musical mixture of California folk-rock and white blues that was nevertheless easier to digest than the sounds of their contemporaries. TAKES OFF, their debut recording, made before Grace Slick joined the band, goes to great lengths to establish them as the obvious next step on a pop staircase of the Beatles, Byrds, and Rolling Stones.
Signe Anderson and Marty Balin's distinctive, folky harmonies give TAKES OFF a lived-in warmth and a loved-in counterculture vibe that defined the times. Covers of John D. Loudermilk's infamous "Tobacco Road" and The Youngbloods' '60s anthem "Let's Get Together" may have symbolized their community's alienation from their parents' values, but the Airplane versions were less calls to arms than sympathetic pats on the back. However, Jorma Kaukonen's boppy R&B; guitar leads and Jack Casady's free but steady bass lend the Airplane's debut some heavy rock muscle.
Their great 1966 debut, with bonus tracks High Flyin' Bird; It's Alright; Go to Her (version 1); an alternate, unedited version of Let Me In ; unreleased alternate versions of Chauffeur Blues and And I Like It .

Somebody To Love Lyrics
When the truth is found to be lies
And all the joy within you dies
(Chorus)
Don't you want somebody to love
Don't you need somebody to love
Wouldn't you love somebody to love
You better find somebody to love
When the garden's flowers, baby, are dead
Yes, and your mind, your mind is so full of red
(Chorus)
Your eyes, I say your eyes may look like his
Yeah but in your head, baby
I'm afraid you don't know where it is
(Chorus)
Tears are running, they're all running down your breast
And your friends, baby, they treat you like a guest
(Chorus)

White Rabbit Lyrics

One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you, don't do anything at all;
Go ask Alice, when she's ten feet tall.
And if you go chasing rabbits, and you know you're going to fall;
Tell 'em a hookah-smoking caterpillar has given you the call;
To call Alice, when she was just small.
When the men on the chessboard get up and tell you where to go;
And you've just had some kind of mushroom, and your mind is moving low;
Go ask Alice, I think she'll know.
When logic and proportion have fallen sloppy dead;
And the white knight is talking backwards;
And the red queen's off with her head;
Remember what the dormouse said,
Feed your head, feed your head

Jefferson Airplane's diamonds performed at Woodstock, on 17th August 1969 .
"Somebody to Love", written by Darby Slick and "White rabbit", written by Grace Slick.
It was back in the year 2008. I had just started listening to Jefferson Airplane. I had looked them up due to a reference John Densmore does in his book "Riders on the storm" to the song "White rabbit"; I was very impressed by the lyrics and...well, the rest is history I guess :)
Searching through youtube, I found this very video that I have posted here. Sadly, it was taken down shortly after that, probably due to copyright issues and shit. So, I decided to upload it and make it available for everyone again.
Jefferson Airplane's performance of these two songs is included in a film called "Woodstock:The Director's Cut" by Michael Wadleigh.
"Good mornin',people!"
Really digging: Jack's outfit and groovy headbanging, Spencer's hat and badass drumming, Marty's voice, sideburns and tambourine, Jorma's playing and crazy hair, Paul's headband and vocals (well on other songs :p) and Grace's eyes, barefootness (lol) and of course her unbelievably amazing voice.
Love Jefferson Airplane's spirit.
Go ride the music people and enjoy!
Edit: I have posted the lyrics in the subtitles area. I think it's helpful! Enjoy everyone!

Lyrics:
We built this city
We built this city on rock and roll
Built this city
We built this city on rock and roll
Say you don't know me or recognize my face
Say you don't care who goes to that kind of place
Knee deep in the hoopla, sinking in your fight
Too many runaways eating up the night
Marconi plays the mambo, listen to the radio
Don't you remember?
We built this city

Lyric :
Look what's happening out in the streets
Got a revolution Got to revolution
Hey I'm dancing down the streets
Got a revolution Got to revolution
Ain't it amazing all the people I meet
Got a revolution Got to revolution
One generation got old
One generation got soul
This generation got no destination to hold
Pick up the cry
Hey now it's time for you and me
Got a revolution Got to revolution
Come on now we're marching to the sea
Got a revolution Got to revolution
Who will take it from you
We will and who are we

Paul Kantner - vocals, guitar
Marty Balin - vocals, percussion
David Frieberg - keyboards, bass, vocals
Craig Chaquico - lead guitar
Pete Sears - bass, piano
Johnny Barbata - drums, vocals (on track #4)
Summary:
Recorded after the monumentally successful Red Octopus album release, but prior to 1976's Spitfire album, this Jefferson Starship concert captures the band performing a diverse set before a hometown audience. With singer Marty Balin back in the fold, the group again contained the three primary vocalists from the Jefferson Airplane, now supported by vocalist, keyboardist, part-time bassist, and ex-Quicksilver Messenger Service member David Frieberg; the young guitar prodigy Craig Chaquico; and the superb rhythm section of bassist/pianist Pete Sears and drummer Johnny Barbata. The group was riding high on the multi-platinum Red Octopus album and was arguably at a new peak of popularity.
This set is not only represented by material from the early Jefferson Starship albums and a couple of Jefferson Airplane classics, but interestingly features live performances of material from Grace Slick's first solo album plus two of the best tracks Marty Balin recorded with his post-Jefferson Airplane project, Bodacious D F.
The recording begins in progress, with the group wrapping up Vic Smith's "Drivin' Me Crazy," the most infectious track from the obscure Bodacious D F album. This sweeping, heart-breaking song about longing for lost love serves as a perfect vehicle for Balin's romantically emotive vocals. An extended version of the Jerry Gallup/Craig Chaquico composition, "That's For Sure" follows, clocking in at nearly twice the length of the studio recording featured on the 1974 Jefferson Starship album, Dragonfly. With barrelhouse piano support from Sears, Grace Slick next takes over with a very bawdy take on "Better Lying Down," a track from her first solo album, Manhole.
In a rare instance of drummer Johnny Barbata fronting the band, they next deliver "Big City," the song he co-wrote with ex-Canned Heat guitarist Joel Scott Hill and original Flying Burrito Brothers bassist Chris Etheridge. Here Barbata handles lead vocals on a song soon to be recorded for the group's next album, Spitfire. Returning to Dragonfly material, David Frieberg next fronts the band on "Come To Life," a song containing words by the Grateful Dead's lyricist extraordinaire, Robert Hunter.
A second taste of the rare Bodacious D F material is next with "The Witcher." Beginning introspectively, this becomes an explosive R&B; workout featuring Balin's lustfully unhinged vocals. Dipping back even further, the group next tackles one of Kantner's early sci-fi classics, "Have You Seen The Saucers." Sandwiched in the middle of this Jefferson Airplane number is an extended and pummeling bass solo courtesy of Pete Sears. This leads up to a raucous take of "White Rabbit," one of Grace Slick's signature songs. The recording concludes with the first taste of Red Octopus material. Craig Chaquico's "Sweeter Than Honey" clearly shows the band heading in a straightforward rock direction, which would capture the attention of a new legion of fans, while alienating older fans that preferred more thought provoking lyrics and the more experimental sound of the Airplane. This leads into a drum solo by Johnny Barbata, prior to the tape stock running out.
With all three Airplane vocalists again on board and a wealth of diverse material in the group's touring repertoire, the Jefferson Starship was arguably nearing its peak around this time. With personnel as well as musical changes again in store as the 1970s wore on, the group would rarely be this engaging again and this recording, although not without it's flaws, represents the Jefferson Starship nearing the end of their golden era.

»Alright, friends, you have seen the heavy groups, now you will see morning maniac music, believe me, it's a new dawn...«
The Airplane's set is a long one, the longest in the Woodstock Experience series, clocking in at over 90 minutes, but it's enthralling throughout. Whether it's the electrified versions of the tunes from Surrealistic Pillow -- "Plastic Fantastic Lover," "White Rabbit," and "Somebody to Love," or the 14-minute space rock in "The Ballad of You, Me & Pooneil," from After Bathing at Baxter's with its massive bass solo by Jack Casady, or the ragged but righteous "House at Pooneil Corners" from Crown of Creation, the Airplane prove here that they could rock with the best of them. Their set as a whole is explosive and full of surprises, with excellent vocal work from Grace Slick and Marty Balin, and very sophisticated interplay between Jorma Kaukonen, Paul Kantner, Casady, guest pianist Nicky Hopkins, and drummer Spencer Dryden.

Summary:
At the dawn of the MTV Age, Jefferson Starship was still plugging away, but they were clearly running out of creative steam. Grace Slick had returned to the band, but during her absence the group had recruited former Elvin Bishop Group vocalist, Mickey Thomas, and Journey's drummer, Ansley Dunbar, into the band. The combination of Thomas' falsetto and Dunbar's drumming, along with a shift in songwriting responsibilities to Chaquico and Sears, led to a harder arena-rock sound that was savaged by the critics and left many of their long-time supporters behind. Possibly due to the nature of this benefit concert and despite internal and external problems, they put on a respectable performance that manages to capture some of the energy of the free concerts of years gone by.
Their set begins with the sure-fire crowd pleaser "Somebody to Love," followed by "Ride the Tiger" from their debut album, Dragonfly. This was a safe approach to opening the set and achieves getting the crowd's support. Slick's lone contribution to their Modern Times album from the previous year, "Stranger," followed by the Red Octopus track, "Fastbuck Freddie," gives her a chance to be the focal point, before they venture into newer material.
They stick to the most recognizable material from recent years, beginning with their 1981 single "Save Your Love," and then Mickey Thomas leads the group through his big hit with Elvin Bishop Group, "Fooled Around and Fell In Love." Kantner's Freedom at Point Zero track, "Girl With the Hungry Eyes," an attempt to embrace the new wave that was becoming increasingly popular, is next and features a moderately interesting bass solo by Sears.
They briefly return to the Red Octopus album for "Play On Love" followed by "Jane," the classic AOR hit from Freedom At Point Zero. The screeching lead vocals and guitar, crunchy chord changes, and dubious reggae-flavored bridge are well received by the audience, but magnify the shifting power within the band, as does "Light the Sky On Fire," a relatively rare song, featured in a Star Wars special and as the B-side of the "Hyperdrive" single.
Kantner's rant at the band's critics and his attempt at defending the many musical changes the band had gone through is next. "Stairway to Cleveland" is fueled by anger and bitterness, but Kantner's sense of humor also comes across and his rebellious nature is exemplified in the refrain "We do what we want!" The Spitfire track, "Dance With the Dragon," gets the expanded jam treatment to close the set on a high note.
The audience wants more and they return for a double encore of Slick's classic Airplane hit, "White Rabbit," followed by the moderately successful 1979 Chaquico penned single, "Rock Music." This easily accessible good time sing-a-long number ends the show on a positive note.
After replacing Dunbar, the group would soldier on to make one more album before Kantner would permanently depart taking the "Jefferson" half of the band name with him. The remaining members would continue into the MTV age as Starship.

Thank you for your understanding and please enjoy the best presentation of this part of this infamous concert - SwingMan1938)
Saturday, December 6, 1969 - A free concert at Altamont Speedway between Tracy and Livermore in Alameda County, California. Attendance was estimated at around 300,000 people, surrounding a stage that was just 39 inches off the ground in a venue that was thrown together with spit and bailing wire at the last minute with "security" provided by a few California chapters of the Hell's Angels - paid with $500 worth of beer and armed with weighted pool cues used as king sized billy clubs, among other things. What could possibly go wrong?
Well, Marty Balin ended up getting decked and The Grateful Dead pulled out of the concert - among many other things, like 4 births and 4 deaths.
Some say this concert, originally envisioned as "Woodstock West", was "The day the '60's lost its love and innocence".
Far as Marty Balin getting decked, here's Marty's account from an April, 1993 interview for Relix Magazine:
"We went on the stage in late afternoon and were doing the first number. I had my eyes closed and I looked up and saw these guys beating this guy with their pool cues. The whole crowd kind of steeped back and that really cheesed me off. Nobody was listening to me sing so I thought, well, this guy needs some help. So I jumped off to help him out. I was helping him out and the Hell’s Angels were going, “Hey, Marty, you better get out of here, you’re gonna get hurt. What are you doing?” So I said, ” Hey, I’m trying to sing a song, you know?” Anyway, I got back up and started singing again and the naked guy went back behind the stage. Then they were fighting behind me and I was really pissed so I went back and started punching out this one guy. He had this wolf’s head on his head and we were pretty evenly matched. I was getting in some good ones. And that’s the last thing I remember before I got knocked out. I woke up with all these boot marks all over my body. I just walked out there. I remember Jorma saying, “Hey, you’re a crazy son of a bitch."
And here's Grace Slick's account of Marty's deckage from a May 23, 2014 interview for Rolling Stone:
"The whole day was ugly. I didn't have my contact lenses on. Or maybe I didn't have them at the time. I couldn't see anything. I saw bodies moving vaguely over on my left, which is where Marty [Balin] was, and I went back to the drums and said to Spencer [Dryden], "What the hell is going on?" And he said, "The Angels are kind of beating up Marty." What happened is they were messing with one of our crew. Marty objected and one of the Angels said something back to Marty, and Marty said, "Fuck you," and the guy knocked Marty down while we were singing and said, "You never say fuck you to an Angel" — and Marty said it again! Our crew had to pull Angels off Marty. And I thought, "Well, this is not a very good start to the day."
And, a little extra backstory courtesy of Terry Douglass - she contacted me via Facebook with a little more backstory and spoke of a friend attending nearby UC Berkeley at the time who was at the concert:
"A friend of mine was there! She was a freshman at UC Berkeley and she said fliers were passed out on campus and within minutes everyone left campus. She said there was a rumor prior that a concert may happen in the Oakland Hills. I think the "security" was located closer to Livermore and they didn't want to deal with Oakland's issues. It's currently closed! Altamont Pass area is a weird area! WARNING: The following footage contains explicit language, violence and brief nudity. Viewer discretion is definitely advised, so anyone looking to gripe behind a thumping pulpit propped by a rickety soapbox in any fake scramble to claim moral high ground had best just unpucker and cork their hole - if you're here and have gotten this far past the "NSFW" in the header and the above, it's by your own choice, so sack up, own it and don't even try to finger anyone else.
Livermore is now, like Napa and Tracy is well kinda an armpit:/ Tracy has had lots of development throughout the years but I don't think it can ever shake the Free concert reputation."

Today we say goodbye to Paul Kantner. Paul and I met and spoke once--he said he would be happy to be interviewed & filmed for Altamont 360°. Another one too late. Well, now he and Sweet William can rock out and laugh about it in heaven.--------In this scene, shot from the day of the Altamont Free Concert of 1969, we see the Jefferson Airplane taking the stage--Grace Slick clearly delighted and fired up--most Hells Angels respectfully and more or less gently moving people off and away from the stage--and then fracas breaking out among concertgoers and Hells Angels recruits---into the middle of which Jefferson Airplane's Marty Balin jumps from the stage, shouting "Fuck you" in his frustration and indignation that one of his audience members is being manhandled--Marty is said to have been coldcocked, and when he came to, spat "Fuck you" again to an Angel, who knocks him out again. The following exchange occurs between Paul Kantner (RIP) and then Frisco Hells Angel, Bill "Sweet William" Fritsch (RIP)--who have known each other from being in intersecting social circles in San Francisco for half a decade by this point:
Paul Kantner: Hey, man, I'd like to mention that the Hells Angels just, uh, smashed Marty Balin in the face--knocked him out for a bit. I'd like to thank you for that.
Sweet William (getting up from sitting stage left): Hey--wait! (grabs a mic) Is this on? You talking to me--I'm gonna talk to you.
Kantner: I'm not talking to you, man. I'm talking to the people who hit my lead singer in the head.
William: You're talking to my *people*. Let me tell you what's happening---*YOU* is what's happening. You know what's happening? We're partying--like you!
RIP guys -- you're both an important part of Bay Area and American social and cultural history-- we'll miss you.
