Opening statement by Federica MOGHERINI, High Representative of the Union for
Foreign Affairs and
Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC,
-
Press statement.
Frederica Mogherini: "
The world needs the
European Union and South Africa to join forces, build bridges, especially in this very dangerous, difficult times for the world on many different issues, be it economic growth and job creation, especially for young people, be it peace and security in
Africa, in the Middle East, elsewhere in the world, be it working on the global issues that take us together as it was very done last year on climate change, on sustainable development, those also thanks to a partnership between European Union and South Africa that was bringing results to the entire global community."
Frederica Mogherini: "The decision that the European Union and its member states has taken of dedicating 3 million Euros, not to the
Turkish government but to projects, directly to projects that guarantee the protection and the support to
Syrian refugees, for sure yes it is a very important humanitarian move. It is something that, as I said and I will clarify completely goes directly to the
NGOs, the international agencies that give protection and assistance to the refugees, so not to the government, but to the projects and to the refugees themselves. To make sure that people who go away from a situation at war and from the atrocities both from the regime in
Damascus and Daesh are protected in a decent and sustainable way. This is something we don’t only do with
Turkey or with the refugees that are in Turkey, but also with the refugees that are present in
Lebanon and in
Jordan, we consider this as our humanitarian duty and also a political responsibility”
Maite Noaka-Mashabane: "
The High level delegation lead by
President Zuma (AU delegation which were sent to Burundi) is not there to replace the
East African Community representative, that remains because people of Burundi said they needed political dialogue. The high level representative committee of the AU is there to support the initiatives of
President Museveni (
Ugandan President
Yoweri Museveni) who was appointed by the
East Africa community."
Frederica Mogherini: "We look with extreme attention and hope at the mission that is currently taking place Burundi hoping for signs that are positive ones that will obviously have an impact also on our considerations and our role we see it in this respect is to support the work that our
African friends are doing. We do not have recipes, but we have ways in which we can support work that can be done by the
African Union, in this case by South Africa."
