"Season Of The Witch" was released British singer-songwriter Donovan's third studio album, Sunshine Superman in the US in September 1966. The album was not released in the UK because of a contractual dispute.
In June 1967, a compilation of the Sunshine Superman and Mellow Yellow albums was released as Sunshine Superman in the UK. Sunshine Superman was named after Donovan's hit single released in the US in July 1966. (Most of the tracks from this and the Mellow Yellow albums were not mixed into stereo until the 2011 2-CD deluxe edition issued by UK EMI).
I've mentioned before that "Sunshine Supermen" was one of the very earliest songs that I have memory of so it will always be kinda special. Donovan has alot of really great music and I get asked about doin' vids for other Donovan greats "Atlantis" and "Hurdy Gurdy Man" often....of course they are special and I'll get around to 'em soon. Till then....here's "Season of the Witch" featuring the 2011 stereo track from FLAC source playing to a video edit of Benjamin Christensen's 1922 Swedish-Danish silent film "Häxan" or "Witchcraft Through the Ages" (English title)....a truly amazing silent film that you really should see if you haven't. It's an obvious choice, and its been done before, but I thought I'd like to try a new edit....and of course use the best audio available for it! Hope you enjoy the season!
Whilst still incorporating folk music, these recordings mark a distinct change in Donovan's music, representing some of the first psychedelia released. A full rock band backs up Donovan on many of the songs, and the instrumentation had been expanded, being one of the first pop albums to extensively use the sitar and other unique musical instruments. This change is partially the result of working with producer Mickie Most, whose pop sensibilities led to chart hits for many other artists at the time.
Donovan's lyrics began to encompass his increasing ability to portray "Swinging London" and give listeners an insider's look into the mid-sixties pop scene. He was known to be close to The Beatles and Brian Jones at this time, and he became widely known after "Sunshine Superman" became a chart-topper in the US, and hit #2 in the UK. Donovan's penchant for name-dropping in songs such as two influenced by his travel to Los Angeles, "The Trip" and "The Fat Angel" (written for Mama Cass) coupled with his chart success helped elevate him to superstar status. In addition to noting the people in the pop scene, Donovan recorded "Bert's Blues" for his friend and folk music notable Bert Jansch.
Contrasting this modern bent was Donovan's fascination with medieval themes in such songs as "Legend of a Girl Child Linda" (written for Brian Jones' girlfriend Linda Lawrence) and "Guinevere". The rich descriptions of colour and environment that Donovan developed in individual songs on Fairytale were now evident throughout his writing.
Several other songs were recorded for Sunshine Superman, but did not make the cut. These include "Museum" (later rerecorded and released on Mellow Yellow), "Superlungs My Supergirl" (later rerecorded and released on Barabajagal) and "Breezes of Patchulie" (originally called "Darkness of My Night" and released on Donovan's 1964 demo collection Sixty Four). The Sunshine Superman recordings of these songs were all included on Troubadour The Definitive Collection 1964–1976.
In the video for the Beatles' "A Day in the Life", a close up of a spinning turntable shows the Epic Records version of Sunshine Superman playing. The film was shot at the recording sessions for the song, which was included on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Donovan (born Donovan Philips Leitch; 10 May 1946) is a Scottish singer, songwriter and guitarist. He developed an eclectic and distinctive style that blended folk, jazz, pop, psychedelia, and world music (notably calypso). He has lived in Scotland, London and California, and, since at least 2008, in County Cork, Ireland, with his family. Emerging from the British folk scene, Donovan reached fame in the United Kingdom in early 1965 with live performances on the pop TV series, Ready Steady Go!.
Having signed with Pye Records in 1965, he recorded singles and two albums in the folk vein, but after a new contract with US CBS/Epic Records his popularity spread to other countries. After extricating himself from his original management contract, he began a long and successful collaboration with Mickie Most, a leading British independent record producer, with hits in the UK, the US and other countries.
His most successful singles were the early UK hits "Catch the Wind", "Colours" and "Universal Soldier" in 1965. "Sunshine Superman" topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart (number two in Britain), and "Mellow Yellow" reached US number two the following year, with "Hurdy Gurdy Man" in the Top 5 in both countries in 1968. He was the first artist to be signed to CBS/Epic Records by the new administrative vice-president, Clive Davis. Donovan and Most collaborated on hit albums and singles between 1965 and 1970. He became a friend of pop musicians including Joan Baez, Brian Jones and The Beatles. He taught John Lennon a finger-picking guitar style in 1968. Donovan's commercial fortunes waned after parting with Most in 1969, and he left the industry for a time.

Sunshine Superman
"Sunshine Superman" is a song written and recorded by Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. The "Sunshine Superman" single was released in the United States through Epic Records (Epic 5-10045) in July 1966, but due to a contractual dispute the United Kingdom release was delayed until December 1966, where it appeared on Donovan's previous label, Pye Records (Pye 7N 17241). The "Sunshine Superman" single was backed with "The Trip" on both the United States and United Kingdom releases. It has been described as having, "proven to be [one of the] classics of the era," and as, "the quintessential bright summer sing along".
"Sunshine Superman" reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and subsequently became the title track of Donovan's third album, Sunshine Superman. A different mix of "The Trip" (without harmonica) is also included in the album. It was the first product from the highly successful three-year collaboration between Donovan and producer Mickie Most and is generally considered to be one of the first examples of the musical genre that came to be known as psychedelia.

Sixty Four
Sixty Four is the 21st studio album and 26th album overall from Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan. It is composed of demo tracks recorded by Donovan in 1964. Sixty Four was released in the United States in February 2004 (Donovan Discs).
History
In the summer of 1964, Donovan negotiated his first record contract with Pye Records and recorded several demo songs. At the time, these demos were intended to circulate within the record company and were not intended for public release. The tapes were subsequently archived and their existence was relatively unknown to the public.
When Donovan was assisting with the compilation of his first compact disc boxed set Troubadour: The Definitive Collection 1964-1976 in the early 1990s, he gained possession of the original demos. Two of the songs were released on the boxed set; covers of Tim Hardin's "London Town" and Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Co'dine". The remainder of the tapes remained unreleased.
After the release of Sutras in 1996, Donovan focused on reorganizing his business around his own website and launching his own independent music label, Donovan Discs. Donovan Discs issued the set of demos as Sixty Four exclusively through Donovan's new website. A limited number of copies were signed by Donovan and also sold from the website.

Mellow Yellow
"Mellow Yellow" is a song written and recorded by Scottish singer/songwriter Donovan. It reached No. 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1966 and No. 8 in the UK in early 1967.
Content
The song was rumoured to be about smoking dried banana skins, which was believed to be a hallucinogenic drug in the 1960s, though this aspect of bananas has since been debunked. According to Donovan's notes accompanying the album Donovan's Greatest Hits, the rumour that one could get high from smoking dried banana skins was started by Country Joe McDonald in 1966, and Donovan heard the rumour three weeks before "Mellow Yellow" was released as a single. According to The Rolling Stone Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll, he admitted later the song made reference to a vibrator; an "electrical banana" as mentioned in the lyrics. This definition was re-affirmed in an interview with NME magazine: "it's about being cool, laid-back, and also the electrical bananas that were appearing on the scene - which were ladies' vibrators."

"Season Of The Witch" was released British singer-songwriter Donovan's third studio album, Sunshine Superman in the US in September 1966. The album was not released in the UK because of a contractual dispute. In June 1967, a compilation of the Sunshine Superman and Mellow Yellow albums was released as Sunshine Superman in the UK. Sunshine Superman was named after Donovan's hit single released in the US in July 1966. (Most of the tracks from this and the Mellow Yellow albums were not mixed into stereo until the 2011 2-CD deluxe edition issued by UK EMI). I've mentioned before that "Sunshine Supermen" was one of the very earliest songs that I have memory of so it will always be kinda special. Donovan has alot of really great music and I get asked about doin' vids for other Donovan greats...

"Season Of The Witch" was released British singer-songwriter Donovan's third studio album, Sunshine Superman in the US in September 1966. The album was not released in the UK because of a contractual dispute.
In June 1967, a compilation of the Sunshine Superman and Mellow Yellow albums was released as Sunshine Superman in the UK. Sunshine Superman was named after Donovan's hit single released in the US in July 1966. (Most of the tracks from this and the Mellow Yellow albums were not mixed into stereo until the 2011 2-CD deluxe edition issued by UK EMI).
I've mentioned before that "Sunshine Supermen" was one of the very earliest songs that I have memory of so it will always be kinda special. Donovan has alot of really great music and I get asked about doin' vids for other Donovan greats "Atlantis" and "Hurdy Gurdy Man" often....of course they are special and I'll get around to 'em soon. Till then....here's "Season of the Witch" featuring the 2011 stereo track from FLAC source playing to a video edit of Benjamin Christensen's 1922 Swedish-Danish silent film "Häxan" or "Witchcraft Through the Ages" (English title)....a truly amazing silent film that you really should see if you haven't. It's an obvious choice, and its been done before, but I thought I'd like to try a new edit....and of course use the best audio available for it! Hope you enjoy the season!
Whilst still incorporating folk music, these recordings mark a distinct change in Donovan's music, representing some of the first psychedelia released. A full rock band backs up Donovan on many of the songs, and the instrumentation had been expanded, being one of the first pop albums to extensively use the sitar and other unique musical instruments. This change is partially the result of working with producer Mickie Most, whose pop sensibilities led to chart hits for many other artists at the time.
Donovan's lyrics began to encompass his increasing ability to portray "Swinging London" and give listeners an insider's look into the mid-sixties pop scene. He was known to be close to The Beatles and Brian Jones at this time, and he became widely known after "Sunshine Superman" became a chart-topper in the US, and hit #2 in the UK. Donovan's penchant for name-dropping in songs such as two influenced by his travel to Los Angeles, "The Trip" and "The Fat Angel" (written for Mama Cass) coupled with his chart success helped elevate him to superstar status. In addition to noting the people in the pop scene, Donovan recorded "Bert's Blues" for his friend and folk music notable Bert Jansch.
Contrasting this modern bent was Donovan's fascination with medieval themes in such songs as "Legend of a Girl Child Linda" (written for Brian Jones' girlfriend Linda Lawrence) and "Guinevere". The rich descriptions of colour and environment that Donovan developed in individual songs on Fairytale were now evident throughout his writing.
Several other songs were recorded for Sunshine Superman, but did not make the cut. These include "Museum" (later rerecorded and released on Mellow Yellow), "Superlungs My Supergirl" (later rerecorded and released on Barabajagal) and "Breezes of Patchulie" (originally called "Darkness of My Night" and released on Donovan's 1964 demo collection Sixty Four). The Sunshine Superman recordings of these songs were all included on Troubadour The Definitive Collection 1964–1976.
In the video for the Beatles' "A Day in the Life", a close up of a spinning turntable shows the Epic Records version of Sunshine Superman playing. The film was shot at the recording sessions for the song, which was included on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

'There Is An Ocean' is a film documenting the Scottish songwriter Donovan during his time spent in Greece with his band Open Road in 1970. The film remained unreleased until 2005 when it was included in the box set, 'Try for the Sun: The Journey of Donovan'.
In 1969 Donovan left the United States at the height of his popularity, leaving his longtime producer Mickie Most, and returned home to explore new directions in his music. With drummer "Candy" John Carr and bassist/guitarist Mike Thompson, he formed a band called Open Road, who released an eponymous album in 1970. Donovan's plan was to tour the world with the band for one year, primarily by boat, as a "tax exile" from the UK. In order to avoid Britain's exorbitant taxes, he needed to be gone from the 5th of April one year to the 5th of April the next, so at the onset of spring, Donovan flew to Greece where he met up with friends, family, bandmates, and his yacht, christened Vagrant.
The band stayed on the island of Crete where they rehearsed for upcoming dates in France, Italy, and Japan, and sailed to various fishing villages on the islands of Sikinos, Ios, and Ithaca to play pop-up gigs for locals and tourists. It is these impromptu concerts, along the beauty of Greece's landscapes and views of the Aegean and Ionian Seas, that There is an Ocean documents.
The film was directed, edited, and produced by British filmmaker Nigel Lesmoir-Godon, who had also made a film about Syd Barrett during the early days of Pink Floyd.
Although Donovan and Open Road had electric instruments in their rehearsal space on Crete, these sessions do not appear on film. All songs are performed by Mike Thompson and Donovan playing acoustic guitars and John Carr on bongo drums and bells. Sometimes the group use microphones, sometimes not. Donovan also sings "The Pee Song" with his three-year-old son.
At the time of filming, none of the songs featured in There is an Ocean had appeared on any of Donovan's albums, with the exception of "Riki Tiki Tavi". Most other songs would appear on subsequent releases between 1971 and 2010.

We are taken on a journey from what caused the 60s youth revolution and what brought it to an end. The film is brought to life by Original music from the EMI archives, rare archive film footage, photographs from Phillip Townsend, the 1st person to photograph The Rolling Stones as well as the Beatles and others, personal photographs from the stars themselves and animations of 1960s illustrations from the Artist Malcolm English.

"Season Of The Witch" was released British singer-songwriter Donovan's third studio album, Sunshine Superman in the US in September 1966. The album was not released in the UK because of a contractual dispute. In June 1967, a compilation of the Sunshine Superman and Mellow Yellow albums was released as Sunshine Superman in the UK. Sunshine Superman was named after Donovan's hit single released in the US in July 1966. (Most of the tracks from this and the Mellow Yellow albums were not mixed into stereo until the 2011 2-CD deluxe edition issued by UK EMI). I've mentioned before that "Sunshine Supermen" was one of the very earliest songs that I have memory of so it will always be kinda special. Donovan has alot of really great music and I get asked about doin' vids for other Donovan greats...

"Season Of The Witch" was released British singer-songwriter Donovan's third studio album, Sunshine Superman in the US in September 1966. The album was not released in the UK because of a contractual dispute.
In June 1967, a compilation of the Sunshine Superman and Mellow Yellow albums was released as Sunshine Superman in the UK. Sunshine Superman was named after Donovan's hit single released in the US in July 1966. (Most of the tracks from this and the Mellow Yellow albums were not mixed into stereo until the 2011 2-CD deluxe edition issued by UK EMI).
I've mentioned before that "Sunshine Supermen" was one of the very earliest songs that I have memory of so it will always be kinda special. Donovan has alot of really great music and I get asked about doin' vids for other Donovan greats "Atlantis" and "Hurdy Gurdy Man" often....of course they are special and I'll get around to 'em soon. Till then....here's "Season of the Witch" featuring the 2011 stereo track from FLAC source playing to a video edit of Benjamin Christensen's 1922 Swedish-Danish silent film "Häxan" or "Witchcraft Through the Ages" (English title)....a truly amazing silent film that you really should see if you haven't. It's an obvious choice, and its been done before, but I thought I'd like to try a new edit....and of course use the best audio available for it! Hope you enjoy the season!
Whilst still incorporating folk music, these recordings mark a distinct change in Donovan's music, representing some of the first psychedelia released. A full rock band backs up Donovan on many of the songs, and the instrumentation had been expanded, being one of the first pop albums to extensively use the sitar and other unique musical instruments. This change is partially the result of working with producer Mickie Most, whose pop sensibilities led to chart hits for many other artists at the time.
Donovan's lyrics began to encompass his increasing ability to portray "Swinging London" and give listeners an insider's look into the mid-sixties pop scene. He was known to be close to The Beatles and Brian Jones at this time, and he became widely known after "Sunshine Superman" became a chart-topper in the US, and hit #2 in the UK. Donovan's penchant for name-dropping in songs such as two influenced by his travel to Los Angeles, "The Trip" and "The Fat Angel" (written for Mama Cass) coupled with his chart success helped elevate him to superstar status. In addition to noting the people in the pop scene, Donovan recorded "Bert's Blues" for his friend and folk music notable Bert Jansch.
Contrasting this modern bent was Donovan's fascination with medieval themes in such songs as "Legend of a Girl Child Linda" (written for Brian Jones' girlfriend Linda Lawrence) and "Guinevere". The rich descriptions of colour and environment that Donovan developed in individual songs on Fairytale were now evident throughout his writing.
Several other songs were recorded for Sunshine Superman, but did not make the cut. These include "Museum" (later rerecorded and released on Mellow Yellow), "Superlungs My Supergirl" (later rerecorded and released on Barabajagal) and "Breezes of Patchulie" (originally called "Darkness of My Night" and released on Donovan's 1964 demo collection Sixty Four). The Sunshine Superman recordings of these songs were all included on Troubadour The Definitive Collection 1964–1976.
In the video for the Beatles' "A Day in the Life", a close up of a spinning turntable shows the Epic Records version of Sunshine Superman playing. The film was shot at the recording sessions for the song, which was included on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
