A drop goal, also referred to as a dropped goal or field goal, is a method of scoring points in rugby union and rugby league. A drop goal cannot be scored in open play by punting the ball, and instead must be scored by drop kicking the ball over the crossbar and between the uprights. After the kick, the ball may touch the crossbar or goalposts, but not the ground (i.e. it must be on the full), before it goes over and through.
A drop goal is worth three points in rugby union and one point in rugby league. If the drop goal attempt is successful, play stops and the non-scoring team (the scoring team in rugby union sevens) restarts play with a kick from the centre spot. If the kick is unsuccessful, the offside rules for a kick apply and play continues until a normal stoppage occurs, usually by the kicked ball going dead or into touch. Defenders may tackle the kicker while he is in possession of the ball, or attempt to charge down or block the kick.
In rugby union, the play is officially called a dropped goal and commonly abbreviated to "drop goal".
A field goal is a general term used in some sports wherein a goal may be scored either during general play ("from the field") or via some sort of free shot. In American football, some rugby games and some basketball shots of certain distance, a field goal is worth three points or one point.

Rugby league football, usually called rugby league, or simply league, is a full contact sport played by two teams of thirteen players on a rectangular field. One of the two codes of rugby football, it originated in England in 1895 as a split from the Rugby Football Union over the issue of payments to players. Its rules gradually changed with the purpose of producing a faster, more entertaining game for spectators. It is frequently cited as the toughest, most physically demanding of team sports. In rugby league, points are scored by carrying or kicking the ball down the field and touching it to the ground beyond the opposing team's goal line;

Fiery Haka at Australia & NZ’s Under-20s Rugby League 2014
With a field goal in the final minute, the Kiwis won the Test Match 15-14.
"The traditional Maori dance has been at the centre of controversy before. Three years ago, France were given a $15,000 fine for advancing on the haka during the Rugby World Cup final.
The Kangaroos did the same to the All Blacks in 2008, and Wales refused to disperse after the haka in the same year, leading to a three-minute stand-off.
Wales have also made the All Blacks do their haka in the dressing rooms at a Cardiff Test, while England have turned their back on the Kiwis during the performance."
As seen news.com.au 19 October 2014.

In rugby league, points are scored by carrying or kicking the ball down the field and touching it to the ground beyond the opposing team's goal line; this is called a try, and is the primary method of scoring. The opposing team attempts to stop the attacking side scoring points by tackling the player carrying the ball. In addition to tries, points can be scored by kicking goals. After each try, the scoring team gains a free kick to try at goal with a conversion for further points. Kicks at goal may also be awarded for penalties, and field goals can be attempted at any time during general play. Rugby league is among the most popular sports in the United Kingdom (in Northern England where the sport was formed), Australia (in North-Eastern states), New Zealand, France (predominantly in the South) and Papua New Guinea, where it is the national sport. The European Super League and Australasian National Rugby League (NRL) are the premier club competitions. Rugby league is played internationally, predominantly by European, Australasian, Pacific, North American and Caribbean countries and is governed by the Rugby League International Federation. The first Rugby League World Cup was held in France in 1954; the current holders are Australia.

Not a single tackle was made but tensions were already heating up between both teams ahead of the junior rugby league Test.
While eyes were rolling and tongues flicking, players from the Junior Kangaroos and Junior Kiwis were clashing heads during the pre-match haka before match officials stepped in on Saturday night.
The video shows the players standing just centimetres from each other as the Kiwis got up close to the Kangaroos before the pushing and shoving broke out at the Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland.

Both teams were standing toe to toe while the young Australian players linked arms during the performance.
‘That was interesting viewing for sure,’ Junior Kiwis coach Brent Gemmell told NZ Herald.
‘When I saw Australia advance and they crossed halfway and I knew our boys were still to walk forward and still to stick a hand out at them.
‘I thought this could potentially turn really sour but it calmed down and we got on with the footy which was good.’

Jonny Wilkinson was the scourge of Australia again as his four penalties put England in the World Cup semi-final after a thrilling win in Marseille.
Lote Tuqiri's try put Australia 10-6 up but Wilkinson's boot and a dominant scrum kept England in the game.
There was little flowing rugby in the second half but England's powerful pack gradually ground Australia down.
Stirling Mortlock and Wilkinson both missed late kicks, but England held on and will now face France in the semis.

There were no such weaknesses on display on Saturday as England wrestled the cup away from an Aussie side who fought tooth and nail to become the first team to retain the trophy.

Australian match reaction
Despite the rain continuing to fall, both sides chose to keep the ball in hand and as the game progressed, so the mighty England pack began to dominate.
With just 10 minutes of the first half left, Ben Kay knocked on with the line beckoning to the frustration of the visiting fans.
Minutes later, England finally silenced their critics when Robinson scuttled over wide on the left after a powerful midfield burst from Lawrence Dallaglio.
The men in white started the second half as they had finished the first.
Johnson led from the front with a towering performance and Dallaglio and flanker Richard Hill caused numerous problems down the middle of the pitch.
But just as England looked likely to pull away, two sloppy penalties allowed Elton Flatley to bring his side back within touching distance.
England looked the more confident side with the ball in hand - but only just.
Will Greenwood knocked on inside the Aussie 22 and Wilkinson then missed a drop goal as the match entered a tense closing quarter.
Runs from the powerful Stirling Mortlock and George Smith pushed England back into their own half.
And as referee Andre Watson prepared to blow for full time, Flatley slotted his third kick of the half to push the match into extra time.
The players looked understandably exhausted and when Wilkinson and Flatley again swapped penalties the match looked as if it was heading into sudden death.
But England were not to be denied and it was fitting that Wilkinson sealed a deserved victory as well as the most memorable result in English rugby history.

Part two will feature on Thursday, 2 July 2015 at 19:30 on SuperSport 1 and part three on Thursday, 3 September 2015 at 19:30 on the same channel.
As he lay on the Cardiff turf at the end of November 2014, Jean de Villiers’ World Cup dream lay in tatters as he contemplated a premature end to his career. However, buoyed by the support from those close to him and fueled by a desire to end on his terms, Jean has fought harder than ever before to get back on the field again. In partnership with him, we have produced a three-part documentary that will give viewers unique insight into Jean as a person, as well as his injury and journey to recovery. Through this inspiring story of positivity and determination, you will see what drives and what sustains him as he takes aim at the ultimate goal – the Rugby World Cup in September.
Part two will feature on Thursday, 2 July 2015 at 19:30 on SuperSport 1 and part three on Thursday, 3 September 2015 at 19:30 on the same channel.

Australia v England (2007 Rugby World Cup)
Australia (10) 10
Try: Tuqiri
Pen: Mortlock
Con: Mortlock
England (6) 12
Pens: Wilkinson (4)
Jonny Wilkinson was the scourge of Australia again as his four penalties put England in the World Cup semi-final after a thrilling win in Marseille.
Lote Tuqiri's try put Australia 10-6 up but Wilkinson's boot and a dominant scrum kept England in the game.
There was little flowing rugby in the second half but England's powerful pack gradually ground Australia down.
Stirling Mortlock and Wilkinson both missed late kicks, but England held on and will now face France in the semis.
Wilkinson may well claim the headlines with his 12-point haul - which made him the World Cup's all-time leading point-scorer - but it was England's pack which did the real damage to an Australia side who were odds-on to make the last four.
England's front row of Andrew Sheridan, Mark Regan and Phil Vickery pulverised Australia at the scrum and laid the platform for the back-row trio of Lewis Moody, Martin Corry and Nick Easter to nullify George Smith at the breakdown.
Despite Mortlock's penalty giving Australia an early lead, he missed two other kickable chances as England had the better of the opening 40 minutes.
An unlucky bounce from Mike Catt's kick into the right-hand corner denied Paul Sackey the chance to score for England's opening try.
England were totally on top at the scrum, but the early penalties at the set-piece went against them as Australia tried to neutralise their opponents' advantage.
A trademark Jason Robinson burst of speed tore through the defensive line as the defending champions finally found the fluency in attack which has eluded them for virtually the entire tournament.
Andrew Sheridan had Australia's front row on the back foot for the whole match
Mathew Tait was central to England's next burst forward, involved several times in a sweeping cross-field move but for all their pressure, the only change to the scoreline was two Wilkinson penalties.
The Wallabies made England pay when Tuqiri eluded the grasp of Josh Lewsey to stretch over in the right-hand corner, finishing off after Berrick Barnes' clever dummy allowed Mortlock's battering-ram run to set up the try.
The score, improved by Mortlock's superb conversion, put Australia four points up at the break but soon after the restart it looked like England's pack had set up their first try.
The pack was in reverse as George Gregan was smothered by Lewis Moody and Andy Gomarsall, trying to get the ball away.
But with the try-line within reach, Wilkinson's pass caught Catt unawares and he knocked on.
Although the attack failed to produce a try, Wilkinson notched another penalty to reduce the deficit to 10-9 as a rattled Australia started to lose their discipline.
Australia were attempting to re-establish themselves in the game when Tait's inspired hack from a stray pass by George Gregan sent play back down the other end of the field.
Rocky Elsom was panicked into conceding a penalty that Wilkinson slotted over to give England the lead.
Australia did engineer a massive overlap on halfway, but Sackey took a gamble by coming in off his wing to take Mortlock man-and-ball, and the decision proved a try-saver as the Aussie captain lost possession.
Drew Mitchell's introduction instantly gave Australia more punch in attack but Nathan Sharpe's knock-on at the vital moment scuppered a dangerous attack.
When Gregan - who was out-of-sorts throughout - conceded a clear penalty for offside on the halfway line, it seemed set up for Wilkinson to apply the finishing touch to another memorable win, but his kick drifted inches wide of the left-hand post.
Mortlock then had a chance to snatch a late victory for Australia with a penalty, but made a mess of it and England held on for their biggest result since the 2003 World Cup final.
England: Robinson; Sackey, Tait, Catt, Lewsey; Wilkinson, Gomarsall; Sheridan, Regan, Vickery (capt), Shaw, Kay, Corry, Moody, Easter.
Replacements: Chuter, Stevens, Dallaglio, Worsley, Richards, Flood, Hipkiss.
Australia: Latham; Ashley-Cooper, Mortlock, Giteau, Tuqiri; Barnes, Gregan; Dunning, Moore, Shepherdson, Sharpe, Vickerman, Elsom, Smith, Palu.
Replacements: Freier, Baxter, McMeniman, Hoiles, Waugh, Huxley, Mitchell.

Rugby league football, usually called rugby league, or simply league, is a full contact sport played by two teams of thirteen players on a rectangular field. One of the two codes of rugby football, it originated in England in 1895 as a split from the Rugby Football Union over the issue of payments to players. Its rules gradually changed with the purpose of producing a faster, more entertaining game for spectators. It is frequently cited as the toughest, most physically demanding of team sports.

New Zealand beat Australia 15-14 with a field goal in the last minute of the game.

2003 Rugby World Cup Final (England v Australia)
England won the Rugby World Cup with a breathtaking Jonny Wilkinson drop goal just 26 seconds from the end of a thrilling final in Sydney.
Millions watched around the world as captain Martin Johnson became the first player to lead a northern hemisphere side to the world title.
Wilkinson's last-gasp effort was all that separated the sides after 100 minutes of rugby and a dramatic extra-time finale.
Australia battled hard and were never out of the game but ultimately fell just short, despite opening the scoring through wing Lote Tuqiri.
The match represented the culmination of four impressive years of improvement from an England team that flattered to deceive in the last World Cup.
Oh the delicious irony - Jonny wins it with a drop goal! Pinch me someone, I'm dreaming!

Then, Johnson and his cohorts were kicked out by South Africa and were rightly criticised for lacking a 'killer spirit'.
There were no such weaknesses on display on Saturday as England wrestled the cup away from an Aussie side who fought tooth and nail to become the first team to retain the trophy.
The Wallabies started strongly when Tuqiri out-jumped Jason Robinson to a huge Stephen Larkham bomb with just six minutes on the clock.
The score was no more than Australia deserved but three Wilkinson penalties soon silenced the strong home support.
