Honda has been selling hybrid cars in the U.S. since 1999 but they have been doing it all wrong! In the old hybrid systems, the electric motor was on the same shaft as the gasoline engine. This was called IMA or integrated motor assist. So anytime the electric motor was going to power the car, it had to also spin the gas motor as well which is not very efficient. What Honda has done with the new earth dreams system on the 2014 Accord Hybrid is separate the electric motor from the gas engine. The advantage of this hybrid system is that the powertrain is very smooth. You cannot tell when the gas motor switches on/off. The gasoline engine is a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder that makes 141 horsepower and when combined with the electric motor the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid has almost 200 HP. The fuel economy is the impressive part at 50 MPG in the city and 45 MPG on the highway. Pricing for the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid starts at $29,155 for the base model and the top-of-the-line Touring Model starts at $34,905. The other nice part is that the Accord Hybrid drives like a regular car. The Accord Hybrid is shaped like a sedan which is better than the ugly wedge shape seen in the Prius.
